OBJECTIVE: To develop a training module for carving ear cartilage.
SETTING: Designing the ear framework is one of the most challenging surgical steps during ear reconstruction in microtia and acquired deformities of the ear. Trainees do not get an opportunity to carve ear cartilage during their training period.
MATERIAL: Ox scapular cartilage was retrieved from a manual slaughterhouse. It was transported in a 4°C ice chamber. This was used as a training material for carving the ear framework. Each scapular cartilage was adequate for two to three ear frameworks.
RESULTS: Twenty-two trainees

BACKGROUND: A variety of strategies have been employed for managing articular cartilage defects of the knee, including drilling and abrasion arthroplasty. These treatments are not always effective and when they are, the benefits may only be transitory. Unsuccessfully treated cartilage damage may progress to degenerative disease states and result in the need for a total knee replacement. In recent years the surgical implantation of healthy cartilage cells (autologous cartilage implantation [ACI] ) into damaged areas has been seen as an alternative option and is currently under investigation as

BACKGROUND: In the cartilaginous nose, classical surgical anatomy describes 2 triangular upper lateral cartilages (ULCs) framing the lateral sides of the mid-third of the nasal pyramid, which articulate with to the superior edge of the quadrangular cartilage (QC) of the nasal septum. This anatomic arrangement in 3 distinct cartilage parts is, however, controversial.
OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed to describe the articulation between the ULCs and the QC, avoiding dissection artefacts.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Six nasal pyramids were taken in monobloc from fresh cadavers and imaged on micro-

Subglottic stenosis is a disease that causes dyspnoea by congenital or acquired stenosis of the cricoid cartilage and trachea. The cause of acquired subglottic stenosis varies. In this case, we present a case of idiopathic subglottic stenosis. Tracheotomies are performed in many cases, but they require long-term insertion of a tracheal cannula and make treatment difficult. In this case study, we performed a tracheoplasty by resection of the arch of cricoid cartilage and circumcision of the tracheal cartilage and implemented a cannula-free observation protocol.

This study was carried out to ascertain whether the cartilage-shaving procedure is appropriate to control thyroid carcinoma with tracheal cartilage invasion. Of 432 thyroid carcinoma patients treated between 1979 and 1988, 16 had tracheal cartilage invasion only. This patient population was made up of 3 men and 13 women, with a mean age of 55.8 years. Fourteen were diagnosed histologically as having papillary carcinoma and the remaining two as having follicular carcinoma. Cartilage shaving was the primary treatment in all the patients, and subsequent radioactive iodine (131I) or external-beam

OBJECTIVE: Aim: Cartilage tissue degradation is a common symptom of diseases affecting the musculoskeletal system. Impairment of its function can occur due to numerous factors, both external and internal. Thanks to advances in imaging techniques, identifying pathologies in cartilage tissue is becoming increasingly common, leading to a search for optimal treatment methods. Human cartilage has a limited capacity for self-repair. Treatments such as transplants have many limitations, which is why biocompatible materials are becoming increasingly popular. This article presents selected biomaterials

Osteochondral lesions of the ankle joint are typically associated with a traumatic etiology and present with ankle pain and swelling. Conservative management yields unsatisfactory results because of the poor healing capacity of the articular cartilage. Smaller lesions (<100 mm2 or <10 mm) can be treated with less invasive procedures such as arthroscopic debridement, anterograde drilling, scaffold-based therapies, and augmentation with biological adjuvants. For patients with large lesions (>100 mm2 or >10 mm), cystic lesions, uncontained lesions, or patients who have failed prior bone marrow st

The natural cartilage layer exhibits excellent interface low friction and good load-bearing properties based on the mechanically controlled adaptive lubrication mechanism. Understanding and imitating such a mechanism is important for developing high-load-bearing water-lubrication materials. Here, we report the successful preparation of thermoresponsive layered materials by grafting a poly(3-sulfopropyl methacrylate potassium salt) (PSPMA) polyelectrolyte brush onto the subsurface of an initiator-embedded high strength hydrogel [poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-acrylic acid-co-initiator/Fe3+)] [P(

Cartilage defects in the knee are common resulting in significant pain and morbidity over time. These defects can arise in isolation or concurrently with other associated injuries to the knee. The treatment of small (< 2-3 cm2) cartilage deficiencies has changed as our basic science knowledge of tissue healing has improved. Advancements have led to the development of new and more effective treatment modalities. It is important to address any associated knee injuries and limb malalignment. Surgical options are considered when nonoperative treatment fails. The specific procedure depends on indiv

Osteoarticular diseases, such as arthritis or osteoarthritis, are multifactorial diseases with an underlying genetic etiology that are challenging to study. Genome-Wide Association studies (GWAS) have identified several genetic loci associated with these diseases. Epigenetics is a complex mechanism of chromatin and gene modulation through DNA methylation, histone deacetylation or microRNA, which might contribute to the inheritability of disease. Some of these mechanisms have been studied for decades in other diseases or as part of the aging process, where epigenetic changes seem to play an imp

There has been renewed interest in the use of cartilage for middle-ear reconstructions. The aim of the present review is to examine the indications, techniques and surgical outcomes of cartilage tympanoplasties reported in the literature. There have been concerns regarding weakening of cartilage struts, from histological studies involving explants; as a result, cartilage struts for ossiculoplasty have not gained popularity. On the other hand, cartilage tympanoplasty is now an established procedure for tympanic membrane and attic reconstruction. The commonest techniques involve cartilage palisa

Atrophic polychondritis (APC) results from elective lesions of the components of elastic cartilage. Clinical criteria have been established in terms of the incidence of auricular, nasal, ocular, tracheobronchial or cochlear involvement. However, recent clinical and pathological reviews have shown the frequency and severity of vascular lesions, aortic as well as peripheral. Several pathological mechanisms probably participate together in the destruction of elastic cartilage. A direct enzyme abnormality of glycoaminoglycanes and of elastic tissue are believed to be interlinked with an auto-immun

Cartilage has undergone rapid development in ear surgery since Heermann used the grid cartilage technique to repair large perforations of the tympanic membrane. Cartilage has been widely used in tympanoplasty, ossicular chain reconstruction, reconstruction of the lateral wall of the upper tympanic cavity and the posterior wall of the external auditory canal due to its advantages of convenient sampling, high stability, good elasticity, low metabolic rate, easy survival and strong plasticity. This paper reviews the use of cartilage in tympanoplasty and discusses the possibility of placing cartil

Since the development of radiography, we have been able to visualize the osseous alterations related to arthritis. These include productive changes, such as osteophyte formation, sclerosis, and buttressing, as well as erosive changes and subchondral cyst formation. However, because cartilage is radiolucent, it is not directly visible by either radiography or computed tomography. With careful attention to technique, both hyaline and fibrocartilage can be visualized by magnetic resonance imaging.
