Kink, flow and retention properties of urinary catheters part 1: conventional foley catheters.

The treatment for urinary incontinence, a common condition affecting a considerable number of older and disabled members of society, involve … ance to kinking, flow rate properties and the retention forces of both latex-based and all-silicone catheters. The results indicated that the all-silicone device had superior resistance to kinking and better flow properties when compared to the latex-based catheters. However, greater retention forces were recorded for the all-silicone device, in both the in …

Peripherally inserted central catheters for parenteral nutrition: a comparison with centrally inserted catheters.

BACKGROUND: Central venous access is crucial for the provision of adequate parenteral nutrition (PN). The type of central venous access device (CVAD) has evolved over the past 10 years. The most recent trend has been to use peripherally inserted central catheters (PICCs). This development has occurred without controlled clinical trials. METHODS: Over a 10-year period, the nutrition support service at a single institution has prospectively collected data on CVADs used for providing PN. The types of CVAD used for providing PN were analyzed, and the major complications associated with CVADs, thr…

Fine-bore peripheral catheters versus central venous catheters for delivery of intravenous nutrition.

We present a descriptive study of 229 consecutive inpatients requiring intravenous nutrition. These patients received either complete periph … n only with central venous catheterization (10.4%). Chemical phlebitis occurred in 17% of fine-bore catheters and 91.4% of Teflon catheters. The infective phlebitis rate of fine-bore silicone catheters was 1.02% and daily risk of phlebitis 0.016%, with no instance of device-related bacteremia or sepsis. Central-line microbial contamination (21.7%) and cathe …

Draining Urinary Sediments Through Conventional Eyelet Catheters and New Intermittent Micro-Hole Zone Catheters.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to assess sediments in complicated and uncomplicated urine samples and the ability of conventional and micro-hole intermittent catheters to drain these sediments. DESIGN: Randomized, single-blinded, cross-over study. SUBJECTS AND SETTING: Adult healthy volunteers (male and female) and patients regularly using intermittent catheterization were enrolled. Urine samples from these study participants were collected with a conventional eyelet catheter and a micro-hole zone catheter, on separate days. In addition, complicated urine samples defined as urine con…

Migration of pediatric epidural catheters.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative pain control in the pediatric population frequently involves epidural catheters placed intraoperatively. A retrospective review of epidural catheter tip position was conducted by evaluation of routine chest anterior-posterior (A-P) X-rays obtained by the surgical and ICU teams. METHODS: Of the 174 pediatric epidural catheters placed during a 1-year period at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin, 59 pediatric patients with chest X-rays demonstrating epidural catheter tip on at least 2 days were reviewed. The change in epidural catheter position was then calculated. The ov…

[Tunneled catheters. Complications during insertion].

INTRODUCTION: The creation of vascular accesses for hemodialysis in patients affected with terminal kidney failure affections, is presented periodically as a problem. Because of it, the availability of alternatives to the arteriovein fistula is something necessary; different types of tunnelled dialysis catheters are being developed, among which the Tesio catheter is the most well known and most widely utilized. Often it is implanted by vascular surgeons or radiologists; this creates dependence for the nephrology services that can delay obtaining the new vascular access and initiating or reinit…

Untangling of knotted urethral catheters.

Intravesical catheter knotting during micturating cystourethrography is a rare but recognized complication of the procedure. We were able to untangle a knot utilizing a fluoroscopically guided vascular guidewire. Following this success, a small study was performed using a model. Various types of guidewires and techniques were tested for different diameters of knots in order to predict the likelihood of success in this type of situation.

Continuing controversy of midclavicular catheters.

A review of 50 years of research on catheter tip placement indicates an overwhelming preference for the lower third of the superior vena cava as the appropriate tip location. Despite this evidence, there are still practitioners, physicians, and nurses who advocate tip placement within the axillo-subclavian-innominate vein (also referred to as the midclavicular). This article looks at the arguments presented by practitioners who support midclavicular tip placement. It also reviews some of the research from which the recommendations for superior vena cava placement are derived.

Twisted fate of bladder catheters.

Catheter knotting is a rare complication of bladder catheterisation. Retention of catheter parts resulting in calculus formation is even rarer. We report a case of a vesical calculus formed over a broken and retained supra-pubic catheter which to the best of our knowledge has yet to be reported, along with three other cases of bladder catheter knotting.

Urinary catheters for intermittent use.

The long-term use of intermittent catheterisation is often suitable for patients with voiding problems who are able to perform self-care. Use of the technique may result in fewer urinary tract problems, the achievement of continence and improvements in quality of life.

Urinary catheters for intermittent use.

Intermittent catheterisation is suitable for a range of patients and has a high level of patient satisfaction. Careful education is required to minimise the risk of complications and nurses should be aware of the various types of catheter available.
