Over one year, 7 autopsy cases with narrow diameters of the descending aorta were seen in the Institute of Forensic Medicine at the University of Bonn. The autopsy results were supplemented by chemical-toxicological, alcohol and histological examinations. In all cases middle-aged men (24-38 years) died suddenly and predominantly in a domestic environment. To some extent the inner aortic diameters ranged significantly below the expected values in relation to body surfaces or were lower than the 5th percentile related to men aged 45 years. In four cases, potentially lethal concentrations of alco

Early deaths occur postoperatively but become rare later after the procedure. Well-control of hypertension, and prevention of congestive heart failure may improve the long-term prognosis …

Wernicke's encephalopathy is a rare cause of maternal death. It is a difficult diagnosis to make but prevention and treatment is straightforward. Severe thiamine deficiency causes Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome. Correct diagnosis and treatment with thiamine will decrease the case fatality rate.

Positional asphyxia (AP) is a fatal condition arising because of the adoption of particular body positions, causing mechanical interference. Consequences are important alveolar hypoventilation and cardiac hyperexcitability due to respiratory acidosis in combination with extensive liberation of catecholamine occurring in attracted individuals sustaining physical restrain. This syndrome can occur in various circumstances and is mostly observed in situations with physical restraint and in combination with excited delirium (ED). The diagnosis is essentially based on three criteria: body position o

Echinococcosis is a frequent parasitic human infection in sheep-farming areas. It is caused by the larval or the cyst stage of a tapeworm, mainly Echinococcus granulosis. Humans can be infected by ingesting tapeworm eggs, from which cysts will be developed mostly in the liver and the lung. Cardiac involvement of echinococcosis is rare and its clinical evolution is silent till the complication stage. A young adult died suddenly. The autopsy showed a ruptured hydatid cyst hollowed on the right side of the interventricular septum, protruding in the ventricle. The left pulmonary artery contained w

It is not well known that giant cell arteritis can cause fatal complications due to rupture of aortic aneurysms or cerebral and myocardial infarctions. If corticosteroid treatment is started early, most of these complications can be avoided.

We report on the age and the causes of death in 16 patients with mitochondrial diseases. Nine patients with mitochondrial encephalomyopathy, lactic acidosis, and stroke-like episodes (MELAS) died at a mean age of 34 years and three patients with chronic progressive external ophthalmoplegia at a mean age of 56 years. The causes of death were cardiopulmonary failure (n = 5), status epilepticus (n = 4), aspiration pneumonia (n = 2), pulmonary embolism (n = 2), renal failure (n = 1), metabolic disturbance (n = 1), and unknown causes (n = 1). Thus, many patients in this series died of medical compl

A case of Fabry's disease, an X-linked in-born error of metabolism, presenting as a sudden death in an elderly female, is reported, along with a review of the literature. The pathological findings of the cellular vacuolation and the characteristic inclusion bodies in the tissues are described.

BACKGROUND: Accurate and timely data on cause of death are critically important for guiding health programs and policies. Deaths certified by doctors are implicitly considered to be reliable and accurate, yet the quality of information provided in the international Medical Certificate of Cause of Death (MCCD) usually varies according to the personnel involved in certification, the diagnostic capacity of the hospital, and the category of hospitals. There are no published studies that have analysed how certifying doctors in Bangladesh adhere to international rules when completing the MCCD or hav…

We compared written text on infant death certificates for deaths coded as sudden infant death syndrome (R95), unknown cause (R99), and accidental suffocation (W75). Using US mortality files supplemented with the death certifiers' written text for all infant deaths with International Classification of Diseases (ICD)-10 assigned codes R95, R99, and W75, we formed cause-of-death subcategories from common themes identified from the written text. Among all infant deaths in 2003-2004, the underlying cause of death was listed as R99 for 2128 deaths, R95 for 4408 deaths, and W75 for 931 deaths. Among …

Identifying the causes of maternal deaths and contributing factors is essential for improving care. In 2015, Tanzania began implementing the maternal and perinatal death surveillance and response (MPDSR) system, including facility-based maternal death reviews. While most MPDSR studies highlight implementation and technical barriers, less is known about how systemic and institutional dynamics influence these reviews. This study examined stakeholders' experiences and perceptions of MPDSR in Tanzania, focusing on how clinical causes of death and contributing factors were identified. The study is

Four thousand seven hundred twenty-eight autopsies performed at the Roswell Park Memorial Institute were reviewed to determine causes of death from cancer. The duration of the disease from the date of diagnosis to death, the primary site of the tumor, a detailed description of the presence or absence of metastatic tumor at a series of sites, and an estimate of the total tumor mass were included in the evaluation. Twenty-three common primary sites were selected for investigation. These sites represented 99% of the total series. Nine causes of death were described. These were respiratory failure

Sudden cardiac death (SCD) pathophysiological point of view can be either mechanical or electrical. In case of mechanical SCD, the most frequent causes are pulmonary thromboembolism and cardiac tamponade due to intrapericardial rupture (aortic dissection, heart rupture). This distinction is important because cardiac arrest retains survival potential through cardiopulmonary resuscitation and defibrillators only if the rhythm is shockable. The heart diseases that can cause SCD vary according to the age of the individual. In young people, primary electrical diseases ('ion channel diseases') and c
