Ceftriaxone use in brucellosis: A case series.

BACKGROUND: Brucellosis is a zoonotic disease caused by Brucella spp. It can be either uncomplicated or complicated when it disseminates to other organs. Treatment for brucellosis involves a combination of at least two antibiotics, or more in complicated brucellosis. Limited data exist on the use of ceftriaxone in the clinical setting. Therefore, we present patient cases in which ceftriaxone was used in brucellosis treatment regimen. METHODS: Patients with documented brucellosis from January 2008 to December 2018 were evaluated for the use of ceftriaxone for treatment in King Abdulaziz Univer

Ceftriaxone-associated nephrolithiasis and gallstone in adults.

BACKGROUND: Ceftriaxone (CTX) is widely used for the treatment of bacterial infections; however, side effects such as gallstone and nephrolithiasis have been reported in children. There is limited information about urinary tract calculi as CTX side effects in adults. Therefore, the present study was aimed to evaluate the incidence of gallstone and nephrolithiasis following CTX administration. METHODS: The present study was conducted in the Vali-e-Asr Hospital. Eighty-four patients with various infectious diseases with different daily treatment (mean ± SD: 4.19±2.54) were included in this stud

Ceftriaxone and acute renal failure in children.

OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to evaluate the clinical profile, treatment, and outcome of ceftriaxone-associated postrenal acute renal failure (PARF) in children. METHODS: We retrospectively studied 31 consecutive cases from 2003 to 2012 for PARF after ceftriaxone treatment. There was no past history of urolithiasis or nephropathy in these children. RESULTS: The average time of ceftriaxone administration before PARF was 5.2 days. The major symptoms apart from anuria included flank pain (>3 years old, 25/25), excessive crying (<3 years, 6/6), and vomiting (19/33). Ultrasound showed mild hydronephros

[Gallstones in association with the use of ceftriaxone in children].

INTRODUCTION: Ceftriaxone associated pseudolithiasis is fairly frequent in children, but rarely taken into account. It occurs in 15% to 57% of children, and in most cases is asymptomatic and resolves spontaneously. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A prospective, observational, and descriptive study was conducted that included patients aged 1 month to 18 years-old who received ceftriaxone. Liver and gallbladder ultrasound was performed at the start of treatment, and every 5 days until it was completed. Patients with abnormal ultrasound findings were followed up clinically every week until they were resol

Use of ceftriaxone in patients with severe leptospirosis.

The optimal treatment of severe and late leptospirosis, and even the need for antibiotic treatment in such clinical settings, remains a subject of debate. Twenty-two patients with severe late leptospirosis were treated with intravenous ceftriaxone 2g daily. Twenty-one patients recovered and one patient passed away due to respiratory complications of the disease. The adverse effect profile and the convenience of the regimen were superior to penicillin regimens reported in other clinical trials. Ceftriaxone may be a reasonable alternative in severe leptospirosis as an efficient, convenient and s

Successful treatment of thoracic actinomycosis with ceftriaxone.

We report the case of a 38-year-old woman who had pulmonary actinomycosis that involved the pleura and the pectoral muscles. The patient was initially treated with intravenous ceftriaxone once a day on an outpatient basis. After 3 weeks of treatment, a computed tomogram showed resolution of the initial findings. This result suggests that ceftriaxone may be an effective and convenient therapeutic agent for the initial parenteral treatment of actinomycosis.

Efficacy of ceftriaxone in serious bacterial infections.

Ceftriaxone is a new semisynthetic cephalosporin with broad-spectrum in vitro activity and an unusually long serum half-life. The clinical efficacy of ceftriaxone was evaluated in 35 infections in 34 patients; 12 of these patients had skin and soft tissue infections, 10 had infections of the urinary tract, 8 had pneumonia, 2 had biliary tract infections, 1 had sinusitis, 1 had diverticulitis, and 1 had a retroperitoneal abscess. Of the 35 infections, 9 were bacteremic. The bacteria isolated included Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Streptococcus faec

The Diagnosis of Ceftriaxone Hypersensitivity in a Paediatric Population.

INTRODUCTION: Penicillins and cephalosporins are the most frequent causes of hypersensitivity reactions (HRs) to drugs in children. Among cephalosporins for intravenous use, ceftriaxone (CT) is the most frequently prescribed in Italy. The aims of this study were to evaluate the diagnostic methods for CT hypersensitivity in a population of children with suspected HRs to this drug and their tolerance toward amoxi-cillin/clavulanic acid (AMX/CLV). MATERIALS AND METHODS: From 2012 to 2018, 90 children were investigated for suspected HRs to CT according to the European Academy of Allergy Asthma an

Asystole after the first dose of ceftriaxone.

The incidence of ceftriaxone-related hypersensitivity skin reactions is between 1% and 3%, whereas anaphylaxis is rare. To the best of our knowledge, the following case is the first report of asystole after the administration of single-dose ceftriaxone. A 55-year-old man was admitted to our emergency department because of high fever, abdominal pain, dysuria, and weakness. To determine the cause of his fever, blood and urine cultures were obtained. Then, an infusion of 1 g ceftriaxone was started slowly. One minute later, cardiac arrest occurred. The rhythm was asystole. Cardiopulmonary resusci

Comparison of azithromycin and ceftriaxone for the treatment of chancroid.

We conducted a randomized, unblinded, prospective study designed to determine the efficacy of single-dose azithromycin for the treatment of chancroid. Men and women 16 years of age and older who had darkfield-negative genital ulcers that were clinically suspected to be caused by Haemophilus ducreyi and who attended urban sexually transmitted disease clinics or presented to hospital emergency departments were enrolled in the study. Patients were randomized to receive 250 mg of ceftriaxone im or 1 g of azithromycin orally, both given as a single dose. They were followed for up to 23 days after t

Clinical experience with ceftriaxone treatment in the neonate.

The safety of ceftriaxone has been evaluated in 80 neonates who were treated empirically for suspected infection with either ceftriaxone and ampicillin (group A, age 0-72 h) or ceftriaxone and vancomycin (group B, age greater than 72 h). Within 48 h after birth 2 group A patients died from sepsis (Haemophilus influenzae, Streptococcus pneumoniae, 1 case each); 1 group B patient died from sepsis (Pseudomonas aeruginosa). All bacterial isolates from group A patients were susceptible to ceftriaxone, but in 4 of the 8 group B patients with positive cultures a change in antibiotic therapy was requi

Pharmacokinetics of ceftriaxone in patients with typhoid fever.

Ceftriaxone in short courses has emerged as an effective alternative to chloramphenicol for the treatment of typhoid fever. To study the pharmacokinetics of ceftriaxone in acute typhoid fever, 10 febrile Nepalese adolescents and young adults with blood culture-positive illness were treated with 3 g of ceftriaxone (intravenous infusion for 30 min) daily for 3 days. On the 1st and 3rd day of treatment, blood and urine samples were collected at defined intervals for measurements of drug concentrations. Kinetic parameters including concentrations at the end of infusion (Cmax) and 24 h after the en
