The biliary excretion of cefazolin was compared with that of cephalothin and cephaloridine in rats and man. In rats, the biliary levels were dose-related with cefazolin and cephalothin but not with cephaloridine. Biliary levels were higher than serum levels after injection of 10--80 mg/kg of cefazolin and cephalothin, whereas serum levels of cephaloridine after injection were higher than biliary levels. A field study was undertaken at the Christian Medical College Hospital in Vellore, South India in 1984. Two hundred and eighty-four clinical isolates of enterobacteria were collected from patients with significant bacteriuria and their sensitivities to a series of beta-lactam antibiotics were determined. This paper gives an abbreviated account of part of a research programme which followed the Aberdeen typhoid outbreak in 1964. Chloramphenicol, the main antibiotic used in treatment, was shown to have a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of between 5 and 2-5 mug./ml. for the S. typhi phage type 34 of the outbreak. The MIC for methacycline was between 5 and 2-5 and 2 mug./ml. Pain on injection due to parenteral administration of cephaloridine, cephalothin, and cefoxitin with or without 1% lidocaine was examined in a rat paw-lick model and the results compared with those obtained in a rabbit intramuscular model of irritation.
