Usefulness of the C1 transverse process as a reference guide in the dissection of the upper lateral neck.

In this investigation we dissected 3 cadavers with the lateral cervical approach to assess the usefulness of the transverse process of the atlas (TPA) as a reference guide in the upper lateral neck. Our results indicate that all the important structures in this space can be identified systematically. Lateral to the TPA sits the posterior belly of the digastric muscle, the stylohyoid muscle, and the occipital artery. Anterior to the TPA, the styloid process can be exposed. The internal jugular vein and cranial nerves X, XI, and XII sit between the styloid process and the TPA. Superior to the TP

Isolated anterior arch fracture of the atlas: child case report.

STUDY DESIGN: The authors report a case of an atlas fracture at the anterior arch. OBJECTIVE: To discuss the difficulty in diagnosing this type fracture. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Fractures of the atlas are not uncommon, and actually constitute 10% of all cervical spine injuries in adults. However, in the pediatric population, fractures of atlas are extremely rare, and only a few cases have been described. Only two isolated anterior arcus fractures of the atlas have been reported previously. METHODS: A 2.5-year-old girl was admitted to the authors' department with neck pain and head tilt

The Crocodylian proatlas functions to redistribute venous blood and cerebrospinal fluid.

The proatlas, a bone located between the skull and the neural spines of the cervical vertebrae, is best known from reptiles. Most previous studies of the proatlas have centered on its developmental, debating the relationship between the proatlas and the cervical neural arches. The present study was intended as a description of the proatlas in the American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) and an experimental test of its hypothesized role in venous blood and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) distribution. In Alligator, the proatlas is chevron-shaped; ventrally it has a loose connection to the dors

Covariation in the Craniocervical Junction of Carnivora.

The craniocervical junction is the transition between the skull and the vertebral column that provides mobility while maintaining sufficient stability (i.e., protection of the brainstem and the spinal cord). The key elements involved are the occiput, the first cervical vertebra (CV1, atlas) and the second cervical vertebra (CV2, axis). The two vertebrae forming the atlas-axis complex are distinct in their morphology and differences in form have been linked to differences in ecological function in mammals. Here, we quantified the morphological diversity of the cranium, CV1 and CV2 in a sample o

A rare developmental variant of the atlas.

Congenital anomalies of the arch of the atlas in the sense of clefts are uncommon. As such anomalies may be mistaken for fractures, radiologists should be aware of them. A case of aplasia of the right part of the posterior arch producing wide, asymmetric medial cleft of the atlas is presented. The patient also had hypoplastic left part of the arch with the lateral cleft formed by a secondary ossification centre in the posterior tubercle. This combination of anomalies has not formerly been presented in literature.
