Mumps is an acute viral illness, which presents with glandular and/or nervous system involvement. The most common central nervous system manifestations of mumps include aseptic meningitis and meningoencephalitis. Mumps meningoencephalitis, which is characterized by fever, vomiting, nuchal rigidity, and altered sensorium, usually develops at least 3-10 days after mumps parotitis. Acute hydrocephalus secondary to mumps meningoencephalitis is rare. Here we report a child who developed acute hydrocephalus following mumps meningoencephalitis and who was treated with external ventricular drainage fo

The Authors report a case of cleft interesting the lower lip and mandible with a sternal cleft. This association is exceptional, it was described in three world cases to this day. At this occasion, a review of the literature is realized, in particular concerning the associated malformatives anomalies and the therapeutic behaviour. It seems to us indispensable to realize an early reconstruction, specially bone correction, and to collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to obtain a good result and a better social incorporation of the child.

OBJECTIVE: The goal of this clinical case is to report a case of ophthalmic zoster in a five-year-old boy and to insist on the relevance of early antiviral treatment (aciclovir) so as to minimize corneal affection and preserve visual function.
OBSERVATION: We report the case of a five-year-old boy of preschool age with no notable pathological history who came for consultation with a painful eruption affecting the forehead, the upper eyelid, the nose. The clinical examination showed many erythematous vesicles affecting the left hemi-face. The diagnosis of ophthalmic zoster has been retained. M

INTRODUCTION: Rosacea ia an uncommon facial eruption in children. We report a case of rosacea associated with a specific episcleritis.
CASE REPORT: A 10-year-old girl consulted for an erythematous papular and pustular eruption of the mid face of 1 month duration. The child complained that she had had a red painful right eye for 6 months. There was no argument for acne, periorificial granulomatous dermititis or for sarcoidosis. The ophthalmological examination gave the diagnosis of ocular and cutaneous rosacea. Oral antibiotics followed by erythromycin gave favorable results for both skin and

BACKGROUND: Children exposed to parental violence (CEPV) may experience a range of adverse outcomes compared to non-exposed peers yet may demonstrate resilience shaped by both internal and external protective factors.
OBJECTIVE: To longitudinally explore the profiles of protective factors in children across the continuum of resilience (i.e., low, moderate, high, and exceptional).
PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Parent-reported data were collected on behalf of 211 CEPV (Mage = 10.11, SD = 2.21) residing across Canada.
METHODS: Grounded in Resiliency Theory, this longitudinal study used online surv

A 1-month-old infant presented with a typical pattern of pyloric stenosis but US revealed an intense hyperechogenicity of the thickened pyloric muscle. Cholecystitis and pancreatitis were also present in this child. Familial hyperchylomicronemia was detected. Surgery confirmed the fatty infiltration of the pyloric muscular layer, which was necrotic and inflammatory. Medical management with restriction of fat in the diet led to a complete recovery. This is an exceptional case of pyloric stenosis where the particular echographic appearance of the pyloric muscle led to successful to medical treat

OBJECTIVES: Physicians who care for children with special (health care) needs (CWSN) often must prescribe therapies and/or specialized, durable medical equipment (DME). Given this responsibility and the increasing scrutiny of prescribing practices by various oversight agencies, understanding the extent to which pediatricians rely on their own expertise when prescribing therapies and DME is an important area of research.
METHODS: As part of an ongoing investigation of physician preparedness for and practice in prescribing therapies, DME, or procedures for CWSN, we mailed surveys to practicing

The authors report the difficulties of preventing mother-to-child transmission in a pregnant HIV-infected woman with a phobia of swallowing pills. After multiple attempts and just as many failures, the authors ended up with cART consisting of small tablets of nevirapine, lamivudine and a continuous intravenous infusion of zidovudine given via an elastomeric pump at home. This case demonstrates the difficulties that HIV physicians can encounter in pregnant women who have difficulties in swallowing tablets. In exceptional circumstances, continuous infusion of zidovudine may be an option, even in

We present a case of an unusual triad in pediatric neurology: a currently 12-year-old boy with cerebral palsy and epilepsy who was later also diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy. We describe the clinical path that resulted in this exceptional diagnosis. This case report illustrates how different neurological disorders may overshadow each other. In addition, it demonstrates that every child with cerebral palsy and either an atypical clinical course or with inexplicable laboratory values-as well as every infant boy born to a theoretical Duchenne muscular dystrophy carrier-should be subjec

BACKGROUND: In recent years, particular interest has been directed toward the topic of intellectual giftedness. An IQ above 130, typically assessed with standardized cognitive scales, is a widely recognized criterion for giftedness. Gifted children often face emotional and socio-relational difficulties, particularly anxiety, due to perfectionism and high-performance pressures. Co-occurring neurodevelopmental disorders like Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Social (Pragmatic) Communication Disorder complicate their adaptation in various life contexts. This is the case of twice

BACKGROUND: Mucoepidermoid cancer is exceptional in the respiratory tract, accounting for only 0.2% of primary lung cancers.
CASE REPORTS: We report three cases of mucoepidermoid carcinoma. The inaugural signs were hemoptysia in a 10-year-old child, recurrent lower respiratory tract infections in a 13-year-old child, and dyspnea with chest pain in a 32-year-old adult. Bronchial fibroscopy disclosed a proximal endobronchial tumor in all three patients. Pathology study of the operative specimen identified low-grade malignant mucoepidermoid carcinoma in the two children and high-grade malignant

Currently, the need for manual disimpaction of fecalomas under general anesthesia is exceptional, as this condition is usually managed orally with polyethylene glycol (PEG)-based laxatives. However, in certain cases, manual extraction becomes necessary. The aim of this article is to describe the case of a child with a rectal phytobezoar caused by sunflower seeds, in whom oral disimpaction was ineffective, requiring manual extraction under general anesthesia in the operating room. A systematic review of cases published between 1980 and 2018 concluded that manual extraction under general anesthe

Inhalation of foreign bodies, a common occurrence in children, can be life-threatening. Different types of foreign bodies can be found, but laryngeal localization is rare. We here report the case of an 8-month-old male infant who presented with respiratory distress, dysphonia, and stridor. On admission, the child exhibited severe laryngeal dyspnea. Cervical CT scan revealed a radiopaque foreign body in the larynx. Endoscopic extraction revealed an impacted fish vertebra in the subglottis. Foreign bodies located in the laryngeal area of the lower airways are rare, and the discovery of a fish ve

Gastric volvulus is a rare clinical condition characterized by a pathological rotation of the stomach greater than 180º around its axis. The wandering spleen is also an exceptional clinical entity characterized by the absence or laxity of splenic ligaments which lead to splenic mobility in the abdominal cavity from its normal anatomical site. Wandering spleen and gastric volvulus association is unusual. Both can be life-threatening if left untreated. We herein present a rare, unusual association of mesenteroaxial gastric volvulus with wandering spleen in a two-year-old child and interpret the

Aortic dissection is exceptional in children. When they are affected, many clinical conditions as Marfan syndrome or Ehlers-Danlos syndrome are usually involved, but up to 22% have no associated background. Its high morbidity and low incidence in this age group require a high level of suspicion in children without predisposing factors when the presentation is atypical, to avoid the severe consequences of the delay of their diagnosis. In this article we describe the dissection and aortic rupture in a 12-year-old child without relevant medical history, and the open repair that was performed as t

Among unvaccinated populations, primary varicella zoster virus (VZV) infection results in a minor childhood illness for the majority of individuals. Mortality is rare, and fatalities associated with cardiac complications are exceptional. In a population where routine VZV vaccination is not practised, we report a death in a previously healthy child secondary to VZV myocarditis. A literature review of cardiac-related VZV mortality in childhood is included. This identified a further 13 cases where death was associated with or attributable to, direct involvement of the myocardium or conducting sys

The authors report a case of an osteoid osteoma of the femoral neck in a child, aged 3 1/2. This is a benign bone tumor, frequently painful with variable relief obtained with salicylates. Clinical latency is not exceptional in children, owing to the delayed diagnosis. When located in the femoral neck it is usually discovered after a delay, owing to the misleading clinical signs and the frequently normal standard x rays. The only treatment for cure is the excision of the nidus, which is usually difficult because of the anatomical location and the perioperative adjustment.

Portosystemic shunts are well established methods of avoiding recurrent hemorrhage from esophageal varices. Hemodynamic aspects and clinical results suggest that distal splenorenal shunts should be preferred over non-selective shunts. The functional capacity of the liver is crucial for any type of shunt. In patients with Child C cirrhosis, mortality is known to be particularly high following an emergency shunt so that, this procedure is recommended only as a rescue operation. Although prophylactic shunting decreases the risk of bleeding from varices, it leads to higher liver-related mortality.

Traumatic impalement is an exceptional cause of anorectal lesions in the child. The clinical diagnosis is sometimes difficult and associated lesions raise the problem of the most appropriate exploratory examination. Based on our experience with three cases, we would emphasize the usefulness of hydrosoluble enema study prudently performed by the surgeon during the preoperative work-up. The precise localization of the lesions must be obtained with careful emergency exploration before repair. Treatment of the trauma includes lavage, drainage and sometimes colostomy. Antibiotics must always be pre
