Child mortality for avoidable causes in Rondônia: temporal series study, 2008-2018.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the trend of infant mortality from preventable causes in children under one year of age in Rondônia from 2008 to 2018. METHOD: Epidemiological study of time series with data from the Mortality and Live Birth Information Systems, driven by STATA® version 11.0, trend measured by Prais-Winsten linear regression and autocorrelation with Durbin and Watson test. RESULTS: The infant mortality rate was 14.57 deaths / 1,000 live births, 9.14 / 1,000 due to preventable causes. Deaths decreased by 2.88% annually (95% CI: - 4.67; -1.06). However, causes that can be reduced by r

Parental Rheumatoid Arthritis, Child Mortality, and Case Fatality: A Nationwide Cohort Study.

OBJECTIVE: We have previously reported increased long-term morbidity in children of parents with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Here we assess child mortality and case fatality in the same cohort. METHODS: All singletons born in Denmark from 1977 to 2008 were identified through linkage of Danish national registries. Cox proportional hazards models were used to calculate hazard ratios (HRs) of death from all causes among children exposed to parental RA, compared to unexposed children. Risk of death after infection or respiratory diseases was also assessed for children below the age of 5 years. RE

Do insecticide-treated curtains reduce all-cause child mortality in Burkina Faso?

To evaluate whether insecticide-treated netting (ITN) reduces child mortality in different epidemiological settings, 4 large, randomized, controlled trials were conducted in Africa. Here we report the findings from the trial in Burkina Faso, in an area of hyperendemic and markedly seasonal malaria transmission. The trial involved 158 villages, with a total population of some 90,000, grouped into 16 geographical clusters. Ascertainment of mortality among children aged 6-59 months began in early 1993. In June/July 1994, 8 of the clusters, randomly selected, received permethrin-treated curtains.

A narrative review of nonspecific effects of pediatric vaccines on child mortality and morbidity.

We reviewed evidence on nonspecific effects of pediatric vaccines on mortality and morbidity in countries with high child mortality. Literature search of epidemiological studies was conducted for studies published between 2000 and September 2021 using MEDLINE. Consistent evidence exists regarding the potential protective effect of measles vaccine on child survival. Vaccination with Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine was related to lower risk of mortality in young children (including low birth weight babies) and inverse associations were found between developing a scar and having a positive

Association of maternal height with child mortality, anthropometric failure, and anemia in India.

CONTEXT: Prior research on the determinants of child health has focused on contemporaneous risk factors such as maternal behaviors, dietary factors, and immediate environmental conditions. Research on intergenerational factors that might also predispose a child to increased health adversity remains limited. OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between maternal height and child mortality, anthropometric failure, and anemia. DESIGN, SETTING, AND POPULATION: We retrieved data from the 2005-2006 National Family Health Survey in India (released in 2008). The study population constitutes a nation

Reducing child mortality in Nigeria: a case study of immunization and systemic factors.

The purpose of the study is to assess the outcome of the Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) in Nigeria, as well as to examine systemic factors influencing its high under-five mortality rate (UFMR). The principal objective of the EPI program when it was implemented in 1978 was to reduce mortality, morbidity and disability associated with six vaccine preventable diseases namely tuberculosis, tetanus, diphtheria, measles, pertussis and poliomyelitis. The methodological approach to this study is quantitative, using secondary time series data from 1970 to 2003. The study tested three hypotheses

Child and maternal mortality during a period of conflict in Beira City, Mozambique.

BACKGROUND: Child mortality rates have been declining in most developing countries. We studied child and maternal mortality risk factors for child mortality in Beira city in July 1993, after a decade of conflict in Mozambique. METHODS: A community-based cluster sample survey of 4609 women of childbearing age was conducted. Indirect techniques were used to estimate child mortality ('children ever born' method and Preceding Birth Techniques (PBT) and maternal mortality (sisterhood method). Deaths among the most recent born child, born since July 1990, were classified as cases (n = 106), and two

[Characteristics of maternal and child nutrition in relation to infant mortality in Kazakh SSR].

Studies of actual nutrition patterns of women in pregnancy and lactation living in Kazakhstan regions with highest infant mortality rates showed significant deficiency of animal proteins, essential amino acids, and vitamins A, E and C. The prevalence of anemias amounted to 40-90% and that of hypogalactia to 32%. At the same time, the breast milk was found to have reduced protein and fat content at its high carbophos contamination. From 70 to 90% of cow milk samples were found to be contaminated with carbophos. Food products for children showed high levels of contamination with aflatoxin produc

Case Report: Molecular autopsy underlie COVID-19-associated sudden, unexplained child mortality.

Herein, we report a child with COVID-19 and seemingly no underlying disease, who died suddenly. The autopsy revealed severe anemia and thrombocytopenia, splenomegaly, hypercytokinemia, and a rare ectopic congenital coronary origin. Immunohistochemical analysis demonstrated that the patient had acute lymphoblastic leukemia of the B-cell precursor phenotype (BCP-ALL). The complex cardiac and hematological abnormalities suggested the presence of an underlying disease; therefore, we performed whole-exome sequencing (WES). WES revealed a leucine-zipper-like transcription regulator 1 (LZTR1) variant

Relationships between area deprivation and stillbirth, neonatal mortality, infant mortality, and child mortality rates in Japan from 2015 to 2022: A descriptive epidemiological study.

BACKGROUND: Evidence on the associations between area deprivation and child mortality in Japan after 2014 is limited. This study aimed to clarify the trends in stillbirth and neonatal, infant, and child mortality rates by municipal-level area deprivation index (ADI) after 2014. METHODS: We calculated the ADI for different municipalities using 2015 and 2020 Japanese census data, and applied the ADI to the analysis periods of 2015-2019 and 2020-2022. We then stratified the municipalities into quintiles by ADI, and calculated the stillbirth and neonatal, infant, and child mortality rates for eac

Reducing infant and child mortality: assessing the social inclusiveness of child health care policies and programmes in three states of India.

BACKGROUND: Even though the overall infant mortality rate and child mortality rate have considerably declined in India, the marginalised groups-Scheduled Caste, and Scheduled Tribe, continue to have higher mortality rates. This study looks at the changes in IMR and CMR amongst disadvantaged and advanced social groups at the national level and in three states of India. DATA AND METHODS: Data from five rounds of National Family Health Survey spanning nearly three decades have been used to measure IMR and CMR according to the social groups for India and for selected states-Bihar, West Bengal, an

Predicting under-five child mortality in Zambia: Machine learning versus parametric survival models.

BACKGROUND: In sub-Saharan Africa, child mortality remains a critical public health challenge, with Zambia exhibiting some of the highest rates in the region. While survival analysis has identified key risk factors, these methods often fail to capture complex non-linear interactions and the dynamic, time-varying nature of longitudinal markers like birth intervals. This study aimed to develop and compare predictive survival models to improve risk stratification for under-five mortality using the 2024 Zambia Demographic and Health Survey (ZDHS). METHODS: A cohort of 35,610 live births was initi

Urban tree canopy fragmentation and child mortality in low- and middle-income countries.

Exposure to urban green spaces is associated with lower risks of several leading causes of under-5 mortality (U5M). While urban development improves infrastructure, healthcare access, and socioeconomic conditions, rapid urbanization in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) has also accelerated the loss and fragmentation of green spaces. Such fragmentation may weaken ecosystem services critical for child health and increase exposure to vector-borne infections, yet its implications for U5M remain poorly understood and must be weighed against the benefits of urbanization. Here, we quantified a

Elder child or young adult? Adolescent trauma mortality amongst pediatric and adult facilities.

BACKGROUND: While it is assumed adolescents receive comparable trauma care at pediatric trauma centers (PTC), adult trauma centers (ATC), and combined facilities (MTC), this remains understudied. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study through the NTDB evaluating patients 14-18 years of age who presented to an ACS-verified level 1 or 2 trauma facility between 1/1/2016 and 12/31/2019. Multiple logistic regression analyses were performed to compare mortality risk among trauma facility verification types. RESULTS: 91,881 adolescents presented after trauma over the four-years.
