Although it is well known that ethacrynic acid (EA) can enhance gentamicin (GM) ototoxicity, there has been no systematic study of the relationship between dosing parameters and inner ear pathology. We examined the effects of two parameters, GM dose and time delay between GM and EA administration, on cochlear and vestibular hair cell loss in chinchillas. 'No delay' groups received one injection of GM (125, 40, 20, or 10 mg/kg i.m.) followed immediately by EA (40 mg/kg i.v.); 'delay' groups received GM (10 mg/kg i.m.) followed by EA 1 or 1.5 h later. Animals were sacrificed 7 days later for eva

Experimental studies have shown that if antibiotic otic drops reach the middle ear cavity they produce severe inflammation. However, the effects of these preparations on the tympanic membrane have not been thoroughly investigated. This study was designed to assess morphological changes in the chinchilla tympanic membrane two to 21 days after a single 0.2-mL application of an antibiotic otic preparation (Cortisporin Otic Suspension) to the middle ear cavity. At two days, the epidermal and the mucosal layers were destroyed. By four days, reepithelialization had occurred and all layers of the tym

An air-conduction circuit model was developed for the chinchilla middle ear and cochlea. The lumped-element model is based on the classic Zwislocki model of the same structures in human. Model parameters were fit to various measurements of chinchilla middle-ear transfer functions and impedances, using a combination of error-minimization-driven computer-automated and manual fitting methods. The measurements used to fit the model comprise a newer, more-extensive data set than previously used, and include measurements of stapes velocity and inner-ear sound pressure within the vestibule and the sc

CASE DESCRIPTION: A 4-year-old nulliparous sexually intact female chinchilla (Chinchilla lanigera) was evaluated because of a 2-month history of blood being sporadically observed in its cage.
CLINICAL FINDINGS: Results of physical examination of the chinchilla were unremarkable except for the presence of blood-stained fur around the perineum. There were no external lesions to account for the bleeding. Findings on urinalysis, bacteriologic culture of urine, and whole-body radiography were unremarkable. The chinchilla's littermate had been evaluated because of similar clinical signs 2 years ear

The treatment of chronic suppurative otitis media caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa remains a challenging problem. The virulence of Pseudomonas is related to its secretion of two matrix metalloproteinases, alkaline protease and elastase. This experiment examines the effects of a synthetic inhibitor of matrix metalloproteinases GM 6001, or N-(2(R)-2(hydroxyamido carbonylmethyl)-4-methylpentanoyl)-L-tryptophane methylamide), in a chinchilla Pseudomonas otitis media model. Thirty chinchillas underwent bilateral subtotal tympanic membrane perforations. Twenty-four chinchillas underwent bilateral mi

This study is meant to illustrate and describe the features of the auditory ossicles of the chinchilla (Chinchilla lanigera), one of the species used more and more frequently in otology and ear surgery as animal model. Cephalic extremities of 12 C. lanigera individuals obtained from a private farm, where this species was bred for fur, were used in this study. The ossicles were obtained either by direct surgical harvesting by mastoid approach or after a dermestid beetle exposure followed by anatomical dissection. The three ossicles that form the assembly are the malleus, incus and stapes. After

Dental disease is among the most common causes for chinchillas and degus to present to veterinarians. Most animals with dental disease present with weight loss, reduced food intake/anorexia, and drooling. Degus commonly present with dyspnea. Dental disease has been primarily referred to as elongation and malocclusion of the cheek teeth. Periodontal disease, caries, and tooth resorption are common diseases in chinchillas, but are missed frequently during routine intraoral examination, even performed under general anesthesia. A diagnostic evaluation, including endoscopy-guided intraoral examinat

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Olive oil is often used by patients to soften ear wax or to relieve ear canal obstruction. It is also sold in drugstores as a cerumenolytic. To date, no study has assessed the safety of ototopical olive oil on hearing in the presence of tympanic membrane perforation. The present study aimed to assess the safety of ototopic olive oil on hearing in the presence of tympanic membrane perforation.
STUDY DESIGN: Prospective, randomized, controlled trial in a chinchilla animal model.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eleven chinchillas underwent bilateral myringotomy. In each animal, on

The goals were to study the physiological effects of auditory nerve myelinopathy in chinchillas and to test the hypothesis that myelin abnormalities could account for auditory neuropathy, a hearing disorder characterized by absent auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) with preserved outer hair cell function. Doxorubicin, a cytotoxic drug used as an experimental demyelinating agent, was injected into the auditory nerve bundle of 18 chinchillas; six other chinchillas were injected with vehicle alone. Cochlear microphonics, compound action potentials (CAPs), inferior colliculus evoked potentials (I

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between aging and suprathreshold auditory function in the chinchilla, a rodent with a relatively long life span and a range of hearing similar to that of humans. Subjects were six 11-12-year-old chinchillas and six young controls. Tests of auditory function utilized evoked potential (EVP) recordings from electrodes implanted in the inferior colliculus and measurements of 2f1-f2 distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs). Tests of frequency resolution (EVP tuning curves for a 2 kHz probe tone), temporal resolution (EVP forward mas

BACKGROUND: Currently available topical otic preparations contain a variety of antibiotics and other ingredients that are potentially damaging to the middle and inner ear. There is therefore a need to identify agents that are safe as well as effective for topical otologic use. In pursuit of that goal, we used an animal model to evaluate the ototoxic potential of the broad-spectrum, penicillin derivative ticarcillin--both alone and combined with clavulanic acid (a beta-lactamase inhibitor).
METHODS: Twenty chinchillas served as subjects. Ten of the animals were given a single middle ear applic

Pseudomonas aeruginosa has been associated with conjunctivitis, enteritis, pneumonia, septicemia, sudden death, and abortion in chinchillas. This case report describes an unusual clinical presentation and diagnosis of P. aeruginosa otitis media and interna with neurologic manifestations. To our knowledge, this clinical presentation has not been reported previously in chinchillas.

Transtympanic medical therapy is becoming an increasingly popular modality for the treatment of "inner-ear disorders." While investigators continue to examine the best dosing paradigms for gentamicin in the treatment of Ménière's disease and for steroids in the treatment of hearing loss, they have also begun to focus on the use of other agents. In particular, transtympanic therapy has been advocated as a plausible route for the treatment of tinnitus. Transtympanic therapy for tinnitus is not new, and a number of groups have reported success in the past. Despite this success, a number of labora

One of the most serious problems in the chinchilla industry is 'fur-chewing', when the chinchilla bites off areas of its own or some other animal's fur. The condition generally develops in both genders at the age of 6-8 months. In chinchilla farms in Croatia an incidence of 15-20% has been observed. A pathomorphological, microbiological and parasitological investigation was conducted on eleven 6- to 11-month-old chinchillas of both sexes with clinical symptoms of 'fur-chewing' and three chinchillas without such signs. Histopathology of the adrenal glands and of the chewed skin revealed changes

Chinchillas were exposed to pink noise at levels ranging from 110 dB (for 8 h) to 125 dB (for 1/4 h). After a 3-week survival period, the animals were terminated without anesthesia and tissues were prepared using a soft-surface preparation technique [Axelsson et al., Acta Otolaryngol. 80, 362 (1975)]. Cochlear hair cell damage as well as vascular pathology was slight. On occasion, a vessel or vessel segment was obviously atypical, thus allowing noise-exposed animals to be differentiated from their non-noise-exposed controls. More often, however, differences between animals were more discrete a

The function of the middle ear (ME) in transforming ME acoustic inputs and outputs (sound pressures and volume velocities) can be described with an acoustic two-port transmission matrix. This description is independent of the load on the ME (cochlea or ear canal) and holds in either direction: forward (from ear canal to cochlea) or reverse (from cochlea to ear canal). A transmission matrix describing ME function in chinchilla, an animal commonly used in auditory research, is presented, computed from measurements of forward ME function: input admittance YTM, ME pressure gain GMEP, ME velocity t

Models and previously reported data are used to describe two hypothetical bone-conduction (BC) induced ear-canal sound-pressure (PEC) sources in chinchillas. Sound-pressure measurements and a middle-ear model are combined with new micro-computed tomography ear-canal measurements. The ear-canal models contain one ideal volume-velocity source in the cartilaginous canal walls and a second in the bony walls. Analyses suggest the following: (i) Vibrations of both the cartilaginous and bony walls contribute to BC-induced PEC. (ii) With an open ear canal, the BC-induced PEC is dominated by cartilagin
