Chlorine Radical Cycling Amplifies Photolytic NOx Release.

The atmospheric chlorine radical (Cl•) is a highly reactive oxidant. However, its formation on particulate matter (PM) surfaces and its role in nitrogen chemistry remain insufficiently understood. This study investigated the Cl• chemistry on photoactive PM and evaluated its potential influence on atmospheric nitrogen cycling. Experimental evidence confirms that the chloride ion (Cl-) on the photoactive surface undergoes oxidation by photogenerated hole (h+) to form Cl•, which subsequently accelerates nitrite intermediate conversion to gaseous nitrogen oxides (NOx). Under the model experimental

Hydrogen/Chlorine exchange reactions of gaseous carbanions.

Gas-phase reactions of three typical carbanions CH(2)NO(2)(-), CH(2)CN(-), and CH(2)S(O)CH(3)(-) with the chloromethanes CH(2)Cl(2), CHCl(3), and CCl(4), examined by tandem mass spectrometry, show a novel hydrogen/chlorine exchange reaction. For example, reaction between the nitromethyl anion CH(2)NO(2)(-) and carbon tetrachloride CCl(4) forms the ion CHClNO(2)(-). The suggested reaction mechanism involves nucleophilic attack by CH(2)NO(2)(-) at the chlorine of CCl(4) followed by proton transfer within the resulting complex [CH(2)ClNO(2) + CCl(3)(-)] to form CHClNO(2)(-) and CHCl(3). Two other

Chlorine exposure: a challenge to the physician.

Industry moves a large volume of chlorine, raising the possibility of unexpected release due to transportation accidents. This could result in a disaster, swamping hospital emergency rooms with exposure cases. The insidious onset of respiratory failure mandates careful evaluation of each victim, no matter how mild the symptoms. The low incidence of morbidity and mortality in industrial exposures suggests that treatment methods used in chlorine plants should be applied to nonindustrial cases; these emphasize immediate immobilization plus oxygen therapy. Adult respiratory distress syndrome must

Alleviating Chlorinated Alkane Inhibition on Dehalococcoides to Achieve Detoxification of Chlorinated Aliphatic Cocontaminants.

Cocontamination by multiple chlorinated solvents is a prevalent issue in groundwater, presenting a formidable challenge for effective remediation. Despite the recognition of this issue, a comprehensive assessment of microbial detoxification processes involving chloroethenes and associated cocontaminants, along with the underpinning microbiome, remains absent. Moreover, strategies to mitigate the inhibitory effects of cocontaminants have not been reported. Here, we revealed that chloroform exhibited the most potent inhibitory effects, followed by 1,1,1-trichloroethane and 1,1,2-trichloroethane,

Kinetics of the Reactions of Chlorinated Very Short-Lived Substances (VSLSs) with Chlorine Atoms.

Chlorinated very short-lived substances (VSLSs), which are not controlled by the Montreal Protocol, are of current concern with regard to recovery of stratospheric ozone. Further study is needed on the temperature dependences of chlorinated VSLSs relevant to atmospheric conditions. Here, the kinetics of chlorinated VSLSs, such as chloroform (CHCl3), dichloromethane (CH2Cl2), dichloroethane (CH2ClCH2Cl), and trichloroethene (C2HCl3) reacting with chlorine atoms, were investigated between 180 and 400 K, expanding the range of temperatures relative to previous studies. RRKM/Master Equation and Ca

Monitoring chlorine residual and trihalomethanes in the chlorinated seawater effluent of a nuclear power plant.

Periodic sampling of the discharged seawater effluent from Madras Atomic Power Station (Kalpakkam, Tamil Nadu, India) was carried out during 2013-2017 to assess the residual chlorine and trihalomethanes content in the outfall discharge water. The variations in dissolved oxygen, temperature, and pH were correlated with the residual chlorine and trihalomethanes content in the discharged effluent. The difference in temperature (ΔT) between influent and effluent seawater samples ranged from 1.95 to 11.0 °C (6.47 ± 1.87). More than 95% of the ΔT values were within the guideline value of 7 °C. The d

Susceptibility of the Algal Toxin Microcystin-LR to UV/Chlorine Process: Comparison with Chlorination.

Microcystin-LR (MC-LR), an algal toxin (cyanotoxin) common in sources of drinking water, poses a major human health hazard due to its high toxicity. In this study, UV/chlorine was evaluated as a potentially practical and effective process for the degradation of MC-LR. Via mass spectrometry analysis, fewer chlorinated-MC-LR products were detected with UV/chlorine treatment than with chlorination, and a transformation pathway for MC-LR by UV/chlorine was proposed. Different degrees of rapid degradation of MC-LR were observed with varying pH (6-10.4), oxidant dosage (0.5-3 mg L-1), natural organi

Enhanced ronidazole degradation by UV-LED/chlorine compared with conventional low-pressure UV/chlorine at neutral and alkaline pH values.

Ultraviolet light-emitting diodes (UV-LEDs) are promising alternatives to conventional low-pressure UV (LPUV) lamps, mainly because they contain no toxic mercury and have a potential for less energy consumption and longer lifetime. In this study, UV sources including UV-LEDs (265, 275 and 285 nm) and LPUV (254 nm) were compared in UV/chlorine degradation of an organic contaminant, ronidazole (RNZ). UV-LED/chlorine performed better than LPUV/chlorine at neutral and alkaline pH values for RNZ degradation considering the fluence-based rate constant. However, the wall plug efficiencies of UV-LEDs

Kinetic models and pathways of ronidazole degradation by chlorination, UV irradiation and UV/chlorine processes.

Degradation kinetics and pathways of ronidazole (RNZ) by chlorination (Cl2), UV irradiation and combined UV/chlorine processes were investigated in this paper. The degradation kinetics of RNZ chlorination followed a second-order behavior with the rate constants calculated as (2.13 ± 0.15) × 10(2) M(-2) s(-1), (0.82 ± 0.52) × 10(-2) M(-1) s(-1) and (2.06 ± 0.09) × 10(-1) M(-1) s(-1) for the acid-catalyzed reaction, as well as the reactions of RNZ with HOCl and OCl(-), respectively. Although UV irradiation degraded RNZ more effectively than chlorination did, very low quantum yield of RNZ at 254
