Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is considered the gold standard for cholelithiasis. Nevertheless possible complications must not be underestimated. In this department, from 1 July 1991 to 30 November 1995, 1005 patients with cholelithiasis underwent videocholecystectomy. There was no peri-operative mortality. INTRODUCTION: The results of laparoscopic cholecystectomy performed as an outpatient procedure were evaluated in a prospective study.
METHODS: Initially, only well motivated and healthy patients were offered outpatient laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Although studies on laparoscopic cholecystectomy using laser surgery show no significant difference when compared to those done with cautery, the use of a laser does have substantial assets. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 348 patients were under observation within 10 years after cholecystectomy. Surgery for destructive and chronic cholecystitis was performed in 115 and 233 patients respectively.
