[Cholera and war].

During last centures wars were the main account of spread of cholera. It is caused by movement of great mass of troops and peaceful populace, acute fall of living circumstances, decline of sanitarium conditions of population aggregates, difficultness or impossibility of effectuating of contra-epidemic measures. Cholera casualty was multifold bigger, the weapon casualty in fighting armies. The article presents data of cholera epidemics, were in fighting armies of different states. During the XXth century fight casualty began to overpass the disease casualty. It is caused by grand increasing of …

Environmental reservoirs of Vibrio cholerae and their role in cholera.

In the aquatic environment, Vibrio cholerae has been reported to be associated with a variety of living organisms, including animals with an exoskeleton of chitin, aquatic plants, protozoa, bivalves, waterbirds, as well as abiotic substrates (e.g. sediments). Most of these are well-known or putative environmental reservoirs for the bacterium, defined as places where the pathogen lives over time, with the potential to be released and to cause human infection. Environmental reservoirs also serve as V. cholerae disseminators and vectors. They can be responsible for the start of an epidemic, may b…

Uganda's cholera elimination journey in a cholera endemic region of Africa.

Uganda has been endemic for cholera since 1971. To reduce the threat of cholera, Uganda reviewed its approach to cholera, emphasizing surveillance, continued using single dose doxycycline for cholera patients and their households, and conducted 16 oral cholera vaccine campaigns in high-risk districts between 2018 and 2021.To understand recent changes in cholera patternsand the impact of the OCV campaigns, we classified districts as endemic, eliminated, or relapsed using the method as defined by the "cholera elimination scorecard" for the years 2018-2024 using cholera surveillance data from the…

Cholera, the Current Status of Cholera Vaccines and Recommendations for Travellers.

Cholera is endemic in approximately 50 countries, primarily in Africa and South and Southeast Asia, and in these areas, it remains a disease associated with poverty. In developed nations, cholera is rare, and cases are typically imported from endemic areas by returning travellers. Cholera is readily preventable with the tools available to modern medicine. In developing nations, cholera transmission can be prevented through improved water, sanitation, and hygiene services and the use of oral cholera vaccines (OCVs). For travellers, risk can be mitigated by practicing regular hand hygiene and co…

Neutralization of cholera toxin with nanoparticle decoys for treatment of cholera.

Diarrheal diseases are a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. In many cases, antibiotic therapy is either ineffective or not recommended due to concerns about emergence of resistance. The pathogenesis of several of the most prevalent infections, including cholera and enteroxigenic Escherichia coli, is dominated by enterotoxins produced by lumen-dwelling pathogens before clearance by intestinal defenses. Toxins gain access to the host through critical host receptors, making these receptors attractive targets for alternative antimicrobial strategies that do not rely on conventional …

Synthetic multivalent ligands for cholera & cholera-like toxins: Protected cyclic neoglycopeptides.

Synthesis of a set of novel glycopeptide analogues as potential cholera/cholera-like toxin inhibitors in their protected form is described. They include di-, tri-, tetra- and pentavalent scaffolds. The synthetic steps were achieved using a combination of solvent-free mechanochemical as well as the conventional solution-phase reactions. During the conventional DIC-HOBt-mediated peptide coupling followed for the preparation of certain glycopeptide analogues an interesting in situ Fmoc deprotection was observed which has been demonstrated to hold potential for synthesiszing glycopeptides/neoglyco…

Coleridge's choleras: cholera morbus, Asiatic cholera, and dysentery in early nineteenth-century England.

Samuel Taylor Coleridge suffered from a variety of bowel disorders throughout his life; though a large part of his ailment was caused by his famous opium habit, he continuously sought an organic origin, and on at least two separate occasions, in 1804 and 1831-32, he ascribed his disorders to attacks of "cholera." With Asiatic cholera apparently first reaching England in late 1831, there was considerable argument among both physicians and the general public as to whether it was a distinctly new disease, or merely a severer variation of traditional English cholera, known as "cholera morbus." Col…

Epidemiology of cholera.

Cholera is an ancient disease that remains a public health problem in many impoverished locations around the world. Seven pandemics of cholera have been recorded since the first pandemic in 1817, the last of which is on going. Overcrowding, poverty, insufficient water and sanitation facilities increase the risk for cholera outbreaks. The epidemiology of cholera in the areas in Asia, Africa and the Americas where the disease occurs continues to evolve.

Modeling cholera outbreaks.

Mathematical modeling can be a valuable tool for studying infectious disease outbreak dynamics and simulating the effects of possible interventions. Here, we describe approaches to modeling cholera outbreaks and how models have been applied to explore intervention strategies, particularly in Haiti. Mathematical models can play an important role in formulating and evaluating complex cholera outbreak response options. Major challenges to cholera modeling are insufficient data for calibrating models and the need to tailor models for different outbreak scenarios.

Cholera in Haiti.

Prior to the 7.1 magnitude earthquake that struck on January 12, 2010, conditions were dire in Haiti. Now, nearly a year later and with the emergency phase long since over, a cholera epidemic has hit Haiti.
