Arteriovenous malformation of the choroid plexus.

A case of a 55-year-old female with arteriovenous malformation (AVM) of the choroid plexus within the right ventricle is reported. Arteriovenous malformation of the choroid plexus is a rare occurrence. The MR findings of this malformation are discussed.

Inflammatory pseudotumor of the choroid plexus.

A case of inflammatory pseudotumor is described, in which CT revealed a hyperdense intraventricular lesion with a trapped temporal horn, and MR imaging showed decreased T1 and markedly hypointense T2 signal with homogeneously intense enhancement. Radiologically and grossly the tumor resembled a meningioma; however, histologically it was composed purely of inflammatory, nonneoplastic components. The lesion was resected with no evidence of recurrence at 5-month follow-up.

Imaging of atypical choroid plexus papillomas.

The authors report a rare case of benign choroid plexus papilloma arising in the cerebellopontine angle (CPA) in a 34-year-old man. Atypical features are described. This is the fourth case of MR evaluation of such tumor in available literature and the second case in the United States. Differential diagnosis is discussed. Choroid plexus papilloma should be considered among calcified, vascular, enhancing masses of CPA even in adulthood. The authors also report an unusual case of choroid plexus carcinoma.

Symptomatic third ventricular choroid plexus cysts.

We describe the imaging findings in 3 children with choroid plexus cysts (CPC) at the foramen of Monro. All CPC measured less than 2 cm and produced symptoms of raised intracranial pressure when located at the foramen of Monro where there was obstruction to the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) flow. Among the imaging studies done on our patients, CPC were depicted best by cranial sonography and CT-ventriculography and missed by standard CT and MRI. Misdiagnosis can lead to inappropriate shunting with adverse effects. Two of our patients had relief of symptoms after resection of the cyst. One patient …

Choroid plexus carcinoma in a dog.

Choroid plexus carcinoma was diagnosed in a 5-year-old female mixed breed dog which was euthanized due to progressive neurologic disease. Diagnosis of the tumour was based on gross and light microscopic findings following a complete necropsy. The chemical staining patterns in the case are compared with human choroid plexus tumours. The criteria for the distinction between benign and malignant variants of choroid plexus tumours are discussed.

[Ossified choroid plexus papilloma--case report].

While the calcification has been documented radiologically in 4 - 25 percent of the cases with choroid plexus papilloma, the ossification of choroid plexus papilloma has been reported only in 3 cases on literature. In this paper, we present a case of large ossified choroid plexus papilloma in the right lateral ventricle. A 35-year-old man was admitted with left hemiparesis and headache. Skull X-rays showed an abnormal calcified mass (25 mm x 23 mm x 14 mm) in the right temporal region. CT scan revealed an abnormal high density area protruding into the right lateral ventricle, and a low density…

Oncocytic variant of choroid plexus papilloma.

Two cases of oncocytic plexus papilloma are presented which were in the fourth ventricle and cerebello-pontine angle in women aged 70 and 63 years, respectively. The cytoplasm of the transformed tumor cells was enlarged, eosinophilic, and granular; and it was characterized ultrastructurally by innumerable mitochondria. Most of them had lamellar cristae, a clear matrix, and contained dense granules. These 'oncocytes' are identical with oncocytes of the human thyroid, parathyroid, bronchi, kidneys, adrenals, salivary gland and myocardium, and non-neoplastic choroid plexus epithelium. As far as w…

Percutaneous choroid plexus coagulation in hydranencephaly.

Percutaneous intracranial endoscopy, performed on 3 infants with hydranencephaly and signs of intracranial hypertension, showed normal choroid plexus and choroid arteries in 2 patients. Transendoscopic coagulation of the arteries and plexus alleviated intracranial hypertension postoperatively. Minimal choroid plexus and no choroid arteries were present in the 3rd patient and coagulation did not alter the clinical course. Computerized tomography scans of the infants with normal choroid plexus demonstrated cerebral tissue in the region of the caudate nucleus; the child with minimal choroid plexu…

Choroid plexus tumors in the dog.

Clinical and necropsy records for nine dogs with tumors of the choroid plexus were reviewed. In seven of the dogs, the tumors were on the left side of the fourth ventricle. All of the dogs were males, ranging in age from 13 months to 9 years. Upper motor neuron tetraparesis and positional nystagmus were the most common neurologic signs. Less frequently recorded were head tilt, vomiting, bradycardia, and signs of cranial nerve dysfunction. Alteration in consciousness was evident in four of the dogs and ranged from personality changes to coma.

Tight junctions in choroid plexus papillomas.

Four cases of choroid plexus papilloma (CPP) obtained at the time of surgical excision were examined by electron microscopy and compared with normal choroid plexus (CP) of mouse and chick. In apical tight junctions fusion of the two outer leaflets of the adjacent cytoplasmic membrane was verified as in CP. This fact suggests that there is a blood-CSF barrier not only in CP but also in CPP.

Diagnostic Challenges in Choroid Plexus Tumours.

Choroid plexus tumours are rare epithelial neoplasms arising from the choroid plexus, accounting for approximately 0.2% of all central nervous system tumours but up to 20% of brain tumours diagnosed during the first year of life. CPTs exhibit marked clinical and biological heterogeneity and are classified into three entities according to the World Health Organization (WHO): choroid plexus papilloma (CPP, WHO grade 1), atypical choroid plexus papilloma (aCPP, WHO grade 2) and choroid plexus carcinoma (CPC, WHO grade 3). Although CPP is a benign tumour with excellent prognosis following complete…
