UNLABELLED: To describe the symptoms of the climacteric female, 287 climacteric patients had their symptoms evaluated according to the criteria of Blatt-Kupperman for menopause. The median age was 50 years (P10 = 43 and P90 = 58). The main complaint was flushing in 46%, psychiatric symptoms in 17.8% a health examination in 14.6%, osteoporosis in 11.1%, menstrual problems in 6.3%, and other symptoms in 4.5%. A questionnaire on climacteric symptoms was sent to every woman living in the city of Linköping, Sweden (120,000 inhabitants) who was born in 1928 or 1930. Of the 1246 women concerned, 1118 (90%) responded. At the time of the survey, 252 women (23%) were pre-menopausal. In the total sample, 10% had undergone hysterectomy and/or bilateral oophorectomy. Different treatments (surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy) for gynaecological cancers may cause ovarian failure or increase menopausal symptoms. There is a widespread reluctance among physicians to prescribe hormone replacement therapy (HRT) to the survivors of gynaecological cancer. This review analyses the use of HRT and of alternative therapies in such women. Squamous cervical cancer is not estrogen dependent and thus HRT is not contraindicated. Twenty-three cases of the climacteric syndrome were analysed in a double-blind study comparing the effect of conjugated equine oestrogen (Premarin) and medrogestone (Colpro) with clonidine (Dixarit) on various clinical parameters. The treatment lasted 20 weeks. Statistical analysis of the results indictaed that opposed oestrogen therapy was effective in reducing hot flushes (P < 0,05) whereas clonidine was not.
