Cognitive enhancement of healthy young adults with hyperbaric oxygen: A preliminary resting-state fMRI study.

OBJECTIVE: To date, no study has examined the effect of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) on the cognitive performance and spontaneous brain activity in healthy adults using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rsfMRI). Our aim was to reveal the neural mechanism underlying the change in cognitive performance caused by increased oxygen. METHODS: In this study, we acquired fMRI data from 20 healthy young adults and used placebo-controlled (PBO) rsfMRI to identify the effect of HBO on the cognitive measures and the regional homogeneity (ReHo) in healthy adults. RESULTS: Compared to the PB

Smart drugs and synthetic androgens for cognitive and physical enhancement: revolving doors of cosmetic neurology.

Cognitive enhancement can be defined as the use of drugs and/or other means with the aim to improve the cognitive functions of healthy subjects in particular memory, attention, creativity and intelligence in the absence of any medical indication. Currently, it represents one of the most debated topics in the neuroscience community. Human beings always wanted to use substances to improve their cognitive functions, from the use of hallucinogens in ancient civilizations in an attempt to allow them to better communicate with their gods, to the widespread use of caffeine under various forms (energy…

Posttraining androgens' enhancement of cognitive performance is temporally distinct from androgens' increases in affective behavior.

Steroid hormone-induced variations in spatial learning and memory tasks have been reported. In this study, androgens' effects in various cognitive and affective tasks were investigated in order to determine whether any observed differences in cognitive performance could be due to affective changes produced by the hormones. Ovariectomized rats (N = 72) received 0.0, 3.0, or 7.5 mg/kg subcutaneously, of testosterone (T), dihydrotestosterone (DHT), or 5 alpha-androstane-3 alpha,17 beta-diol (3 alpha-Diol) suspended in 10% ethanol/sesame oil v/v. Focus on Cognitive Enhancement: A Narrative Overview of Nootropics and "Smart Drug" Use and Misuse.

Whilst "nootropics" are meant to treat a range of medical disorder-related cognitive impairments, the typically healthy "smart drugs" user ingests a range of drugs/molecules to achieve improved mental performance. Given the increasing levels of related concerns, this study aimed to provide an overview of the clinical pharmacological issues relating to both the most popular nootropics and the vast range of drugs that are being used as putative cognitive enhancers/smart drugs. In terms of the cognitive decline associated with neurological degenerative disorders, a significant variation in resear

Can Slow-Wave Sleep Enhancement Improve Memory? A Review of Current Approaches and Cognitive Outcomes.

Slow-wave sleep (SWS) is involved in the overnight consolidation of declarative memories. Recent efforts using auditory stimulation, slow-oscillatory transcranial direct current stimulation (so-tDCS), and pharmacological agents have targeted sleep slow-waves as a method for enhancing cognitive performance. However, no studies thus far have integrated current evidence to provide a preliminary review of the effects of SWS enhancement on memory and other cognitive outcomes. The objective of this review was to synthesize the results of recent experimental studies that have used auditory stimulatio

Cognitive stimulation enhancing memory and mental function.

Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (CST) is one of the best non-drug treatments for dementia patients that is based on evidence and can help them improve their cognitive and emotional performance. CST developed from reality orientation and social interaction models into a prevalent intervention that employs themed activities to stimulate memory, language, and attention functions, thereby improving participant engagement and quality of life. This paper elucidates the theoretical framework, session organisation, and therapeutic methodologies of CST. The research examines the broader implications of C

Acute psilocybin enhances cognitive flexibility in rats.

Psilocybin has been shown to improve symptoms of depression and anxiety when combined with psychotherapy or other clinician-guided interventions. To understand the neural basis for this pattern of clinical efficacy, experimental and conceptual approaches that are different than traditional laboratory models of anxiety and depression are needed. A potential novel mechanism is that acute psilocybin improves cognitive flexibility, which then enhances the impact of clinician-assisted interventions. Consistent with this idea, we find that acute psilocybin robustly improves cognitive flexibility in

Cognitive enhancers as a treatment for heroin relapse and addiction.

Heroin addiction is a disorder that stems from maladaptive plasticity within neural circuits and produces broad cognitive deficits. Despite considerable advances in psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy for heroin relapse and addiction, effective treatments for heroin use disorder are still lacking. Increasing preclinical evidence indicates that heroin seeking behavior is persistent after withdrawal, while cognitive dysfunctions associated with chronic heroin use are an important contributing factor to risk of heroin relapse and addiction. Cognitive enhancers may be used to stimulate treatment suc

[The 1998 domestic state of development of cognitive enhancers].

Recently, there is a great social problem that geriatric disorders, especially senile dementia, are growing rapidly with the increasing percentage of aged individuals in the total population. However, there is yet no drug that has reliable effects on senile dementia on the market. Therefore, society requires the development of new drugs that can support patients so that they can smoothly live their daily lives by themselves. In this study, we attempted to investigate the 1998 domestic state of development of cognitive enhancers by summarizing many publications and by gathering questionnaires f

tDCS-induced enhancement of cognitive flexibility in autism: role of frontal lobe and associated neural circuits.

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by impaired social interaction and restricted, repetitive behaviors (RRBs). These symptoms may stem from cognitive flexibility deficits, with dysfunction in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) and related neural circuits proposed as underlying mechanisms. OBJECTIVES: This study examined whether transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) could enhance PFC activity and functional connectivity, thereby improving cognitive flexibility in a valproic acid (VPA)-induced ASD rat model. METHODS: Pregnant Sprague-Daw

Cognitive reserve predicts episodic memory enhancement induced by transcranial direct current stimulation in healthy older adults.

Episodic memory shows the largest degree of age-related decline. Anodal transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) can enhance episodic memory in aging but there is also evidence of response variability even when using identical stimulation parameters. To explore which inter-individual factors (i.e. age, education, encoding performance, cognitive reserve, tDCS group and timing of tDCS application) may directly and/or indirectly modulate verbal memory recall, we used data from our previous tDCS studies that showed enhanced episodic memory recall in 80 healthy older adults. In these studies

Mechanisms of functional improvement in a 2-year trial of cognitive enhancement therapy for early schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive rehabilitation has emerged as an effective treatment for addressing cognitive impairments and functional disability in schizophrenia; however, the degree to which changes in various social and non-social cognitive processes translate into improved functioning during treatment remains unclear. This research sought to identify the neurocognitive and social-cognitive mechanisms of functional improvement during a 2-year trial of cognitive enhancement therapy (CET) for early-course schizophrenia. METHOD: Patients in the early course of schizophrenia were randomly assigned to …

Motivation enhancement therapy can increase utilization of cognitive-behavioral therapy: the case of social anxiety disorder.

Despite the documented efficacy of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) for many psychological disorders, the vast majority of suffering people do not receive treatment. Treatment underutilization may prove at least partially due to ambivalence about seeking treatment. Ambivalence could result if, for example, people with social anxiety disorder (SAD) want to decrease their anxiety symptoms but are worried they will be judged negatively should they seek treatment. Motivation enhancement therapy (MET) can be a useful tool to help non-treatment seekers explore and resolve ambivalence regarding see

Task-specific theta enhancement and domain-general alpha/beta suppression as oscillatory signatures of cognitive flexibility.

Cognitive flexibility-the ability to adapt to changing situational or task demands-is a fundamental aspect of human cognition and a potential source of individual differences in higher-order cognitive abilities. To further understand the neural mechanisms underlying this ability, we examined event-related spectral perturbations (ERSP) in three cued switching tasks (parity/magnitude, global/local, number/letter) in a sample of 148 adults. Employing a data-driven approach that combined mass-univariate time-frequency analysis, cluster-based permutation testing, and latent change structural equati
