In order to evaluate the antibody response to pathologic leptospira from both serovars icterohaemorrhagiae and canicola, dogs were experimentally inoculated with these leptospiras. Each of the serovar were inoculated in 15 dogs and the antibody response in the acute phase of infected was followed by microscopic agglutination and complement fixation tests. Histoplasmin skin test results in patients with chronic pulmonary histoplasmosis from Missouri and Texas were compared to results in a previous study of U.S. Navy recruits. When consideration was given to geographic areas from which persons from each group were admitted to the study, it was found that the recruits were as likely to have a positive skin test as were those with the disease. In this study, the serum antibody titer of Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) in 82 patients with herpes labialis and 100 controls was determined using the complement fixation test. In own experience, the Tzanck smear test (reported to be an aid in the diagnosis of HSV infection) was of no value. In comparison to patients in an early stage of infection, convalescent patients had an antibody titer that was 4 or more times higher (1/64-1/256). Sera from patients with a variety of infections were used to compare the sensitivity and specificity of the complement fixation (CF) and the indirect immunofluorescence (IIF) tests for schistosomiasis. The blocking effect of rheumatoid factor (RF) and cold agglutinins (CA) on the detection of complement-fixing (CF) antibodies for Histoplasma capsulatum using a mycelial (histoplasmin) and a yeast antigen was studied.
