[Rules and regulations concerning contact lens-related infection].

Contact lens-related infectious keratitis is a potentially sight-threatening complication. Bacterial keratitis, mostly due to Gram-negative bacteria, is associated with poor lens hygiene, overnight wear, and contaminated lens care solutions. Contamination of the lens storage case may cause fungal keratitis. Acanthamoeba infection is related to the use of tap water or swimming while wearing soft lenses. Viruses are of less concern among contact lens wearers. Possible transmission of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease by multi-patient trial lenses must be taken in account. To minimize these risk factors,

Microplastic contamination associated with contact lenses and related ophthalmic materials under real-world conditions.

PURPOSE: Commercial ophthalmic products including contact lenses are a source of microplastic pollution with increasing scientific interest due to prolonged and repeated contact with the ocular surface. But the polymer-based materials of associated containers for storing and cleaning of contact lenses may represent an underestimated source of microplastic exposure. This preliminary study investigated microparticle presence and composition, with particular focus on microplastics. METHODS: Samples of new and long-term used contact lenses, packaging materials, storage containers, and cleaning an

Plackett-Burman design for screening of critical variables and their effects on the optical transparency and swelling of gatifloxacin-Pluronic-loaded contact lens.

The optical and swelling properties of gatifloxacin-loaded contact lens decrease owing to the precipitation of gatifloxacin (on hydration) in the matrix structure of the contact lens. This paper focuses on the use of Pluronic F68 both inside and outside (in the packaging solution) the contact lens to form micelles to dissolve the gatifloxacin precipitates and not limited to sustain the release of gatifloxacin. The aim of this study was to screen the critical variables affecting the optical and swelling properties of gatifloxacin-loaded contact lens. The independent variables investigated were

Emerging trends in contact lens-related infections.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This article reviews the literature on past and recent trends in contact lens-related microbial keratitis from bacterial, fungal, and Acanthamoeba infections. RECENT FINDINGS: Contact lens wear is the most important risk factor for microbial keratitis. Despite increased use of daily disposable contact lens wear, the incidence of bacterial ulcers related to contact lens wear remains high. Overnight contact lens wear is the leading risk factor in contact lens-related bacterial infections. There may be a trend towards increasing antibiotic resistance of Gram-positive bacteria

Contact lens correction of presbyopia.

The ageing population highlights the need to provide effective optical solutions for presbyopic contact lens wearers. However, data gathered from annual contact lens fitting surveys demonstrate that fewer than 40% of contact lens wearers over 45 years of age (virtually all of whom can be presumed to suffer a partial or complete loss of accommodation) are prescribed a presbyopic correction. Furthermore, monovision is prescribed as frequently as multifocal lenses. These observations suggest that an optimal solution to the contact lens correction of presbyopia remains elusive.
