Multidimensional analysis of the concentrations of 17 substances in the CSF of schizophrenics and controls.

The concentrations of 17 substances were determined in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of 28 paranoid schizophrenic patients and 16 controls. Results were standardized and simultaneously evaluated through Multidimensional Scaling (MDS). The full data set can be considered as a cloud of points consisting of the 44 subjects in the 17-dimensional parameter space. MDS seeks a two-dimensional representation of this 17-dimensional cloud of points, while retaining as much as possible the distances between the subjects. The two-dimensional reduction of the 17 CSF parameters correctly separated 15 of 16

Associations of clinical personnel characteristics and controlled substance prescribing practices.

CONTEXT: Over 68,000 deaths were attributed to opioid-related overdose in 2020. Evaluative studies have shown that states that utilized Pres … owed a statistically significant difference between specialty category and frequency of prescribing controlled substances. After checking the PDMP, male physicians were more likely to alter their original prescription to include harm-reduction strategies. Optimizing the use of PDMP systems may serve to improve prescribing among US physicians.

Attentional function and inhibitory control in different substance use disorders.

Attentional function in substance use disorder (SUD) is not well understood. To probe attentional function in SUD as a function of primary substance of abuse, we administered the attentional network task (ANT) to 44 individuals with Cocaine Use Disorder (CoUD), 49 individuals with Cannabis Use Disorder (CaUD), 86 individuals with Opioid Use Disorder (OUD), and 107 controls with no SUD, along with the stop-signal task (SST). The ANT quantifies the effects of (temporal) alerting cues and (spatial) orienting cues to reduce reaction time (RT) to targets, as well as probing how conflicting (target-

Designation of oripavine as a basic class of controlled substance. Final rule.

This is a final rule issued by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) designating oripavine (3-O-demethylthebaine or 6,7,8,14-tetradehydro-4,5-alpha-epoxy-6-methoxy-17-methylmorphinan-3-ol) as a basic class in schedule II of the Controlled Substances Act (CSA). Although oripavine was not previously listed in schedule II of the CSA, it has been controlled in the United States as a derivative of thebaine and, as such, is controlled as a schedule II controlled substance which includes "Opium and opiate, and any salt, compound, derivative, or preparation of opium or opiate." Oripavine is a deri…

Toxic substance exposure and multiple myeloma: a case-control study.

By means of a population-based, multicenter case-control investigation, certain toxic substances were evaluated as risk factors for multiple myeloma. Interviews were completed on 698 subjects with newly diagnosed multiple myeloma, and 1,683 controls were selected from the same geographic areas as those of the cases. Respondents were asked if they had ever been "highly" exposed" to one or more of a list of toxic substances or to other substances not on the list. With the aid of a toxicologist, responses were then categorized into 20 exposure groups. Those who reported past exposure to pesticide

The monitoring of trade in and control of psychotropic substances to guard against their diversion.

The establishment of international control of opiates has been an important achievement of the international community; this is substantiated by the fact that, at the beginning of this century, legally manufactured morphine and heroin were the principal sources of illicit supply, whereas at present the illicit traffic in these drugs is supplied from illicit sources. The poppy straw process has helped to promote measures to control opium poppy cultivation in a number of European countries; Turkey has been a successful example of such control. The present large-scale illicit traffic in cannabis

A human rights view on access to controlled substances for medical purposes under the international drug control framework.

The world is confronted with a major public health deficit caused by poor access to controlled essential medicines under the international drug control framework. This is affecting millions of patients on a daily basis and resulting in numerous human rights violations. The present review contextualises this deficit from a human rights perspective. Drug control efforts are informed by a twofold objective stemming from the double nature of scheduled substances: free access for medical purposes should be ensured, though non-medical use of substances such as opium should be restricted. The interna

Acoustic Levitation-Controlled Droplets for Contactless Enrichment and Sensitive Detection of Volatile Organic Substances Integrated with GC-MS.

Analyzing trace-level volatile organic compounds (VOCs) remains challenging due to initial sampling and preconcentration limitations. Inspired by the highly reproducible and constantly renewable electrode surface of dropping mercury electrode (DME), a contactless enrichment process was first reported by using an acoustic levitation device to trap and concentrate VOCs from gas samples onto suspended droplets, which were then directly transferred into gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) for real-time analysis. Compared with traditional methods injection methods, this method achieves a 4

The Design and Development of a Novel Device that Converts a Patient-Controlled Intravenous Pump into an Oral Liquid Medication Dispenser for Non-Controlled Substances.

BACKGROUND: Timely administration of oral medications is a significant inpatient challenge, particularly in the context of postoperative pain management with limited nursing resources. Delays in delivering non-opioid analgesics, such as acetaminophen, can result in poorly controlled pain and increased opioid use. METHODS: To address this gap, we developed the Patient-Controlled Oral Liquid Dispenser (P-COLD), a novel bedside device that enables patients to self-administer non-controlled liquid medications within programmable safety parameters. The system integrates a hospital-grade intravenou

Early maladaptive schemas in substance use disorder: A case-control study.

INTRODUCTION: Early maladaptive schemas have been increasingly implicated in the development of numerous psychopathological conditions. However, research examining their association with substance use disorders remains limited. AIM: We aimed to identify and evaluate the activation levels of early maladaptive schemas in individuals diagnosed with a substance use disorder in comparison to a healthy control group. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional, analytic, and case-control study over four months (December 2023 - April 2024). Our investigation included 50 subjects with a substance use di

ParalichenysinDY4, a novel bacteriocin-like substance, is employed to control Clostridium perfringens.

Clostridium perfringens (C. perfringens) is an important pathogen that contributes to human and animal disease. At present, antibiotic therapy is one of the most effective strategies for C. perfringens. However, with the rise of antibacterial resistance, new agents with novel mechanisms of action are urgently needed. Bacteriocins are recognized as a viable alternative to antibiotics. In this study, the bacteriocin-like substance ParalichenysinDY4, derived from the Bacillus paralicheniformis (B. paralicheniformis) DY4 strain, is investigated as a potential alternative for combating Clostridium

Substance use and driver fatality in Norway: An expanded case-control study.

OBJECTIVE: Using alcohol or psychoactive drugs before driving a motor vehicle may increase the risk of crash involvement, injury, and death. This is better documented for alcohol than for drugs. The aim of this study was to expand a previous case-control study on substance use and driver fatality by doubling the number of cases and controls, and hence improve the statistical power and enable the analysis of combined substance use. METHODS: We collected data on alcohol and drug use from all 1197 drivers of cars and vans who were fatally injured in road traffic crashes in Norway between 2005 an

Controlled Substance Use and Clinical Outcomes of Elderly Patients After a Fall.

Controlled substance use, particularly among the rising elderly population, places these patients at a much higher risk of falls, injuries, and hospitalization. This study examines the association between preinjury controlled substance prescription and clinical outcomes of older adults after a ground-level fall. A total of 5,930 patients were included. Their home medication list was analyzed to record active opioids, benzodiazepines, narcotics, or other substances defined as controlled according to the Drug Enforcement Agency. Almost half (45%) of the patients were taking controlled substances…

Adult Medical Cannabinoid Use and Changes in Prescription Controlled Substance Use.

Introduction: Nonopioid-based strategies for managing chronic noncancer pain are needed to help reduce overdose deaths. Although lab studies and population-level data suggest that cannabinoids could provide opioid-sparing effects, among medical cannabis participants they may also impact overdose risk by modifying other controlled substance use such as sedative hypnotics. However, no study has combined observational data at the individual level to empirically address interactions between the use of cannabinoids and prescribed controlled substances. Methods: Electronic health records, including …

A randomized controlled trial of a money management-based substance use intervention.

OBJECTIVE: Money management has been implemented, often in bundled interventions, as a strategy to counteract spending of public support checks and other funds on drugs and alcohol. The authors conducted a randomized controlled trial of a voluntary money management program as an adjunctive treatment for patients in treatment for mental illness, substance use disorders, or both. In the advisor-teller money manager (ATM) intervention, a money manager stores patients' checkbooks and automated bank cards, trains patients to manage their own funds, and links spending to activities related to their

Use of low-dose topiramate in substance use disorder and bodyweight control.

In recent years topiramate has been used for psychiatric patients, mainly for controlling substance use and food intake. A total of 46 patients who received topiramate treatment during the study period were identified from a computer database. Nineteen had received topiramate for at least 1 month. Twelve patients received topiramate for anticraving effects (alcohol, n = 9; heroin/amphetamine, n = 1; meperidine, n = 1; and nicotine, n = 1). On an average dosage of 112.5 mg/day, nine of the 12 patients (excluding three alcoholic patients) achieved complete or partial remission from the substance
