Corneal opacities after small-incision lenticule extraction.

A 36-year-old woman was referred to our clinic in October 2021 with suboptimal vision at intermediate and near distances and halos and photophobia after a small-incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) in December 2019. The patient needs to increase font size of her computer to 150% to read text, but images still appear blurred. She indicates that sunglasses seem to improve her contrast. Preoperatively, her refractive error was -2.5 diopters (D) and -2.25 D for right and left eyes. The optical zone size of the SMILE procedure was 6.8 mm. There is no further information available on the peroperati

Chlorpromazine-induced skin pigmentation with corneal and lens opacities.

Chlorpromazine is known to cause abnormal oculocutaneous pigmentation in sun-exposed areas. We present the case of a psychiatric patient who developed blue-gray pigmentation of the skin as well as corneal and lens opacities following 7 years of chlorpromazine treatment. Ten months after discontinuation of chlorpromazine, the skin discoloration and anterior lens deposits showed partial improvement, but the corneal deposits remained unchanged. A review of the literature on the reversibility of chlorpromazine-induced abnormal oculocutaneous pigmentation also is provided.

Central corneal mosaic opacities in Schnyder's crystalline dystrophy.

PURPOSE: To report an unusual presentation of Schnyder's corneal crystalline dystrophy (SCCD), sharing the feature of central corneal mosaic opacities. DESIGN: Observational case report. METHODS: A 51-year-old man and his family members were examined. Investigations included slit-lamp biomicroscopy, radiography of knee joint, plasma lipid level, and genotyping of the SCCD candidate region in chromosome 1p34.1-1p36. RESULTS: A symmetric, central, disciform, full-thickness opacity was seen in both corneas of the patient. The opacities appeared in a mosaic pattern, instead of collections of cr

Prevalence and risk factors associated with corneal opacity in The Gambia.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Corneal opacity (CO) is a significant cause of vision impairment and blindness worldwide. The first National Eye Health Survey in The Gambia (1986) and follow-up (1996) showed a decline in the crude prevalence of blindness but an increase in blindness from non-trachomatous CO. This study aimed to provide an update on the prevalence of CO and identify associated risk factors. METHODS: Multi-stage stratified cluster random sampling was used to select a nationally representative sample of 10 800 adults aged ≥35 years. Distance best-corrected visual acuity was assessed with Peek …

[Surgical treatment of central corneal opacities in Salzmann's degeneration].

UNLABELLED: Salzmann's nodular degeneration (SND) is a condition characterized by superficial subepithelial fibrosis of the cornea. Surgical treatment of SND usually consists of manual keratectomy of fibrotic nodules. When stromal layers of the optical zone are involved in the pathologic process, more technically complicated approaches may be preferred. PURPOSE: This study evaluated the effectiveness of surgical treatment of central corneal opacities in SND. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study analyzed surgical treatment outcomes of 61 eyes in 46 patients following the removal of centrally locat

Endoscopic laser cyclophotocoagulation in pediatric glaucoma with corneal opacities.

INTRODUCTION: Endoscopic diode cycloablation (ECP) has shown modest efficacy for the management of pediatric glaucomas. Eyes with pediatric glaucoma and corneal opacities pose obstacles to intraocular surgery. We examined the role of ECP in lowering intraocular pressure (IOP) as well as that of endoscopy in facilitating tube shunt placement in these eyes. METHODS: Retrospective chart review of 12 eyes (11 patients) with glaucoma and corneal opacities from 12/99 to 9/05. ECP was performed for IOP control with success defined as postoperative IOP < or =21 mm Hg, with or without medications and

A Rare Form of Corneal Opacity Associated with Spondyloepiphyseal Dysplasia Congenita.

A 13-year-old Japanese female diagnosed with spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia congenita (SEDC) was referred for ophthalmologic evaluation. Examination with slit-lamp and optical coherence tomography revealed bilateral thin cornea with diffuse corneal opacity which was localised at the posterior stromal depth in the central cornea. Unlike the two previously reported cases of diffuse and nodular patterns of corneal opacity in SEDC, the current case exhibited a rare form of corneal opacity. SEDC is one of the type II collagenopathies, characterised by dwarfism because the mutations in COL2A1 prevent …

Stabilized triple procedure for management of coexisting corneal opacity and cataract.

We describe a surgical technique combining penetrating keratoplasty and cataract surgery with a secure anterior chamber to manage coexisting corneal opacity and cataract. Lamellar corneal dissection is performed to 80% of the corneal depth to provide sufficient visibility for cataract surgery. Manual small-incision cataract extraction and intraocular lens implantation is performed through a frown-shaped scleral tunnel. Subsequently, 4 small penetrating incisions are made along the edge of the trephination mark at the 3, 6, 9, and 12 o'clock positions. A graft is placed on the ophthalmic viscos…
