Magnetic resonance imaging and clinical features of 16 children with agenesis of the corpus callosum are reviewed. The patients were classified in three groups. Eight children had agenesis of the corpus callosum without substantial involvement of other brain areas. This group included patients with interhemispheric cyst, lipoma, or partial agenesis (hypogenesis) of the corpus callosum. Four patients in the second group manifested severe telencephalic dysgenesis in addition to agenesis of the corpus callosum. In the third group, agenesis of the corpus callosum was a component of a syndrome in f…

OBJECTIVE: There is evolving evidence that developmental dyslexia is associated with anomalous cerebral morphology in the bilateral frontal and left temporoparietal regions. This study examined the morphology of the corpus callosum, as possible deviations in other important structures are poorly understood in this behaviorally diagnosed syndrome.
DESIGN: Magnetic resonance imaging scans were obtained from children with developmental dyslexia and from matched control children. Morphometric measurements were examined to determine if regional differences existed in the corpus callosum between th…

The corpus callosum is the largest fiber bundle in the cerebral white matter in the human brain. A multitude of disorders including congenital malformations, acute and chronic traumatic lesions, ischemia, neoplasms, secondary manifestations of metabolic, toxic or degenerative diseases as well as chronic inflammatory and demyelinating diseases can primarily or secondarily affect the corpus callosum. This article presents magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) characteristics of the most relevant diseases affecting the corpus callosum.

Agenesis of the corpus callosum is a congenital brain malformation that can occur in isolation or as a component of a congenital syndrome. Hepatoblastoma (HB) is a rare tumor that comprises two thirds of primary hepatic neoplasms in children and adolescents. Up to 20% of children with HB have associated congenital anomalies. In addition to defined genetic syndromes such as Familial Adenomatous Polyposis, Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome, Trisomy 13, and Trisomy 18, HB is significantly associated with kidney/bladder abnormalities. We present two children with multiple congenital anomalies, including…

The subject herein discussed is malformations about which information abounds. This is due to constant improvements in approaches to obtaining such information through images generated by modern imaging technology. As the examination of structures at hand progresses, so does the possibility for precise imaging diagnostics. Agenesis of the corpus callosum is one those subtle and difficult to detect malformations which are currently becoming subjects of research. Agenesis of the corpus callosum is a brain anomaly with incidence of occurrence from 0.05 to 0.7%. It could be either observed in 49% …

Sirenomelia is a very rare anomaly presented with fusion of the lower limbs. Genitourinary, neural tube, and vertebral anomalies are found in most cases. We report a case of sirenomelia with agenesis of corpus callosum, which has not been reported previously.

Functional abnormalities in the interhemispheric transfer via the corpus callosum in schizophrenia may result in filtering problems and information processing problems, which may in turn be related to the synchronization of cortical event-related activity. To explore whether a relationship exists between corpus callosum (CC) size, measured with in-vivo magnetic resonance imaging, and late auditory event-related P300 potentials, 50 patients with schizophrenia as well as 50 healthy controls were examined. The absolute CC size and subregional areas, as well as the CC areas adjusted for total brai…

The blood supply of the corpus callosum is studied in 20 brains by injecting the vascular system with gelatinous Indian ink. The arterial vascularization derives mainly from the anterior cerebral arteries, accessed from the median artery of the corpus callosum or from the terminal and choroidal branches of the posterior cerebral arteries. The various arteries give off perforating branches which are direct or indirect, short, of middle length or long. All these arteries concentrate on the peripheral wall of the corpus callosum. Inside of it these various arteries give off numerous terminal and …

The unusual pattern of seizure development and developed seizure in a cat kindled at the ventral hippocampus is discussed in the light of agenesis of the corpus callosum (CC). In this animal, not only the CC but also the hippocampal commissure was completely absent and the dorsal portion of the septal area was separated in the midline. There was no other morphological anomaly except for slightly enlarged lateral ventricles. No behavioral or physical peculiarities were noted. The unusual profile of kindling in this animal was characterized by (a) very rapid kindling at the primary site, (b) the…

Ketamine did not provide adequate anaesthesia for pneumoencephalography in a 10-week-old child with agenesis of the corpus collosum. Associated neurological defects are the most likely reason for this failure.

The corpus callosum (CC) connects the cerebral hemispheres and is the major mammalian commissural tract. It facilitates bilateral sensory integration and higher cognitive functions, and is often affected in neurodevelopmental diseases. Here, we review the mechanisms that contribute to the development of CC circuits in animal models and humans. These species comparisons reveal several commonalities. First, there is an early period of massive axonal projection. Second, there is a postnatal temporal window, varying between species, in which early callosal projections are selectively refined. Thir…
