Use of patients' unsolicited correspondence to a family doctor to describe and understand valued components of a doctor-patient relationship: A Hermeneutics approach.

BACKGROUND: Communication and behavior within doctor - patient encounters have been examined using varied techniques; however the nature of unsolicited writings from patients to their family doctors has rarely been reported. This paper therefore aimed to explore the content of, and motivation for, such correspondence. METHODS: One hundred and seven writings to one family physician about care provided during a four decade period were considered. Univariate analyses were used to identify features of patients or family members who wrote personalized notes to the doctor, when, and in what fashion

Unusual suicide note written on the body: two case reports.

Suicide notes are commonly written on some materials, such as notebooks, papers, and mirrors. Additionally, suicide plans have been communicated in face-to-face conversations, by speaking on the telephone, recording on CDs or video cassettes, and sending messages through text messaging. In this article, 2 suicide death cases are presented in which suicide notes were written on the bodies of the victims. The first case, a 32-year-old man, was a university graduate and had been unemployed for years; he committed suicide in his house by hanging. On the external examination, it was seen that there

The controversy surrounding "The man who would be queen": a case history of the politics of science, identity, and sex in the Internet age.

In 2003, psychology professor and sex researcher J. Michael Bailey published a book entitled The Man Who Would Be Queen: The Science of Gender-Bending and Transsexualism. The book's portrayal of male-to-female (MTF) transsexualism, based on a theory developed by sexologist Ray Blanchard, outraged some transgender activists. They believed the book to be typical of much of the biomedical literature on transsexuality-oppressive in both tone and claims, insulting to their senses of self, and damaging to their public identities. Some saw the book as especially dangerous because it claimed to be bas

Neurosurgery 100 years ago: the Queen Square letters of Foster Kennedy.

The prominent New York City neurologist Foster Kennedy (1884-1952) trained at London's Queen Square from 1906 to 1910. He was exposed to a number of eminent neurologists including, Sir Victor Horsley and other surgeons. A previously published but little known group of Kennedy's personal letters written during his neurological training is reviewed in light of their historic neurosurgical context. These often entertaining although at times unflattering letters capture the elation and frustration of neurosurgical experience during that important developmental period. Descriptions of the personali

Unpublished letters from Prosper Menière: a personal silhouette.

It is ironic that, while the term "Menière's disease" is becoming more and more well known today, published accounts of a biographic nature are scarce for the man for whom the eponym was devised: Prosper Menière. As we are obliged to turn to only a few avenues for this sort of information, we are fortunate to discover new sources of original materials to augment the published account of the life and character of Menière the man. One such unpublished source that has recently come to light is a cache of letters from the pen of Menière that was preserved for the period extending from the early 18

The relative effectiveness of three reminder letters on making and keeping mammogram appointments.

One hundred fifty women who had previously had at least one mammogram were sent one of three prompt letters informing them that they were due for screening. The letters were either reassuring, anxiety provoking, or the standard hospital prompt. Based on a review of the literature, we hypothesized that the reassuring letter would be most effective in motivating women to schedule and keep appointments, the anxiety-provoking letter would produce an intermediate level of compliance, and the standard hospital letter would be least effective. Our hypothesis was partially supported. Overall, 45% of t

Analysis of conceptual overlap among formal thought disorder rating scales in psychosis: a systematic semantic synthesis.

Measuring Formal Thought Disorder (FTD), a common, cross-diagnosed symptom dimension across mental disorders, is plagued by numerous inconsistencies. Clinicians use either FTD-specific scales or items from generic scales. While these tools are based on extensive clinical observations, they suffer from inconsistent terminology. Different scales may use the same term for distinct concepts or different terms for the same concept. This lack of conceptual standardization prevents the identification of underlying FTD subconstructs. By using natural language processing, we compared the definitions, l

Communicating messages of care and positivity to peers with SCI/D improves loneliness in volunteer letter writers.

CONTEXT: Peer-based volunteering is a potential strategy to alleviate loneliness. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the impact of participating as a volunteer letter writer on pre/post-program loneliness outcomes and to examine experiences with participation. METHODS: Volunteers with spinal cord injury/dysfunction (SCI/D) participated in a 6-month program writing letters to peers. Mixed methods were used to evaluate volunteers' experiences with the letter writing program. Pre/post loneliness outcomes were examined using a paired t-test. Post-program evaluation included satisfaction, benefit, and negati

Rebuilding the Standardized Letter of Recommendation: A Consensus-Based Redesign of the Standardized Letter for Colon and Rectal Surgery.

INTRODUCTION: Standardized letters of recommendation (SLORs) have been adopted in colon and rectal surgery to reduce bias and improve consistency in applicant evaluation. Despite their widespread use, concerns remain about their limited ability to distinguish between applicants and their susceptibility to inflated ratings and narrative bias. This study aims to identify program directors' perspectives on the current SLOR and guide the development of an improved tool to improve utility, fairness, and meaningful assessment in the selection process. METHODS: A needs assessment survey was distribu

[A historic case of Wegener's granulomatosis: the physicist who discovered the electromagnetic waves: Heinrich Hertz].

SUMMARY: A diary and an extensive correspondence of Heinrich Hertz and his family provide a meticulous documentation of his life, made available by Albrecht Folsing in 1997 through a carefully investigated biography, which permit the conclusion that H. Hertz died of Wegener's granulomatosis, 45 years before this disease had been explored. WEGENER'S GRANULOMATOSIS: The symptoms of the granulomatosis, that was first described by Friedrich Wegener in 1936 and 1939 are presented in short with literal quotations of the author: It begins with a refractory cold that will last until the end, then foll

[Rokitansky and Virchow--the giants of pathology in disputatio].

On the occasion of the bicentenary of Carl Rokitanskys birth, I was kindly asked to review the relationship between the two great pathologists, Rokitansky and Virchow. As Virchow specialist and editor of the first complete edition of his work, I found the task of writing about their relationship particularly interesting. Although much has written on the subject, I tried to find new points to further illuminate their relationship.
