Oral HPV infection and sexuality: a cross-sectional study in women.

Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is the main risk factor for cervical cancers and is associated with close to 36% of oropharyngeal cancers. There is increasing evidence that oral HPV transmission is related to sexual behavior but to our knowledge studies that involve women who have sex with women have not been performed. We examined the prevalence of oral HPV according to sexual behavior among a population-based sample of 118 women and have made some inferences of possible predictors of oral HPV infection. Women were categorized as heterosexual (history of vaginal sex and/or oral sex with males only

Multivalent mpox protein nanoparticle vaccines confer cross-protection against orthopoxvirus infection.

The outbreak of mpox since 2022 has driven the development of mpox virus (MPXV)-specific, subunit-based, next-generation vaccines, instead of the currently used live-attenuated vaccinia virus (VACV) vaccines. Here, we describe a self-assembling protein nanoparticle against MPXV using lumazine synthase to present viral surface proteins. Multivalent nanoparticles elicited broader and stronger immune responses against MPXV and provided superior heterologous protection in rodent models against lethal VACV challenges compared to monovalent formulations. The three antigens with the best protective e

The Cross-Species Immunity During Acute Babesia Co-Infection in Mice.

Babesiosis causes high morbidity and mortality in immunocompromised individuals. An earlier study suggested that lethal Babesia rodhaini infection in murine can be evaded by Babesia microti primary infection via activated macrophage-based immune response during the chronic stage of infection. However, whether the same immune dynamics occur during acute B. microti co-infection is not known. Hence, we used the mouse model to investigate the host immunity during simultaneous acute disease caused by two Babesia species of different pathogenicity. Results showed that B. microti primary infection at

Cross-sectional IgM and IgG profiles in SARS-CoV-2 infection.

BACKGROUND: Accurate serological assays can improve the early diagnosis of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection, but few studies have compared performance characteristics between assays in symptomatic and recovered patients. METHODS: We recruited 32 patients who had 2019 coronavirus disease (COVID-19; 18 hospitalized and actively symptomatic, 14 recovered mild cases), and measured levels of IgM (against the full-length S1 or the highly homologous SARS-CoV E protein) and IgG (against S1 receptor binding domain [RBD]). We performed the same analysis in 103 pre-

Toxoplasma gondii Infection and Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Premenstrual dysphoric disorder is a severe form of premenstrual syndrome. The influence of Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) infection on clinical features in women with this disorder has not been studied. Therefore, we determined the association of T. gondii infection with symptoms and signs in women suffering from premenstrual dysphoric disorder. METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional study of 151 women suffering from premenstrual dysphoric disorder. Anti-Toxoplasma IgG and IgM antibodies were detected in sera of the participants using enzyme-linked immunoassays (EIAs). In additio

Experimental cross-species infection of common marmosets by titi monkey adenovirus.

Adenoviruses are DNA viruses that infect a number of vertebrate hosts and are associated with both sporadic and epidemic disease in humans. We previously identified a novel adenovirus, titi monkey adenovirus (TMAdV), as the cause of a fulminant pneumonia outbreak in a colony of titi monkeys (Callicebus cupreus) at a national primate center in 2009. Serological evidence of infection by TMAdV was also found in a human researcher at the facility and household family member, raising concerns for potential cross-species transmission of the virus. Here we present experimental evidence of cross-speci

Epidemiology of hookworm infection in Itagua, Paraguay: a cross sectional study.

A cross-sectional study in Itagua, Paraguay tested 192 people for the presence, intensity and species of hookworm infection. Fifty-nine percent of these individuals were found to be infected. Intensity of infection was determined on 92% of infected individuals by quantitative egg counts. The high intensity hookworm infections, which cause the greatest morbidity, were clustered between the ages of five and 14 years. No differences were seen between genders. The species of hookworm was determined for parasites reared from 72% of infected individuals. Both Necator americanus and Ancylostoma duode

Dobrava virus infection: serological diagnosis and cross-reactions to other hantaviruses.

Recent data have shown that Dobrava (DOB) hantavirus is the cause of severe haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) in central and eastern Europe. To determine whether serological assays need to be based on the homologous viral antigen rather than on closely related hantavirus antigens, acute and convalescent sera from patients with HFRS collected in former Yugoslavia were examined for IgM and IgG to three hantavirus antigens; DOB, Hantaan (HTN) and Puumala (PUU). Focus reduction neutralization test was included for comparison and confirmation of the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (EL

Cross-infection enhancement among African flaviviruses by immune mouse ascitic fluids.

Cross-infection enhancement of seven African flaviviruses by subneutralising concentrations of antibody in immune ascitic fluids was investigated in P388D1 cell culture. Infection by all the seven flaviviruses tested was enhanced by homologous and at least one of six heterologous immune mouse ascitic fluids (IMAF) tested. Enhancement ratios and enhancing antibody titres were higher in homologous than in heterologous enhancement. Zika, Wesselsbron, Uganda S and West Nile viruses were enhanced in culture by all the IMAF tested. Enhancement of Dakar bat and Yellow fever viruses was produced by fi

Hospital outbreak of Listeria monocytogenes septicaemia: a problem of cross infection?

A 74-year-old man was admitted to hospital with septicaemia and meningitis caused by Listeria monocytogenes. Subsequently 3 inpatients developed listeria septicaemia. Case-to-case transmission of the infection seems possible, although the method of transmission remains obscure.

Cross-Priming and Cross-Tolerance After Intramuscular mRNA Vaccination for Viral Infections: Feasibility and Implications.

The induction of robust CD8 T cell immunity after intramuscular (i.m.) mRNA vaccination has remained a challenge. Due to the limited presence of professional antigen-presenting cells (APCs) in muscle tissue, this route of administration tends to result in the transfection of muscle cells at the injection site with insufficient T cell activation capacity. The attraction of migratory APCs and related processes that lead to the acquisition of antigenic material from transfected non-APCs arises as a potential alternative to facilitate activation of CD8 T cells in the draining lymph nodes. This ind

The outcome of cross-priming during virus infection is not directly linked to the ability of the antigen to be cross-presented.

The initiation of CD8(+) T cell (CTL) immune responses can occur via cross-priming. Recent data suggested a relationship between cross-presentation and immunodominance of epitope-specific T cells. To test this association, we evaluated the efficacy of cross-presentation for several virus epitopes in vitro and examined if this can be extrapolated in vivo. Employing lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV), we demonstrate that the cross-presentation and cross-priming of LCMV antigens were dominated by NP396, but not NP205 when analyzing the LCMV-NP. Although with LCMV-GP, cross-presentation was

Vaginal microecological diversity and Ureaplasma urealyticum co-infection in high-risk HPV infection: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Persistent high-risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV) infection is a key driver of cervical carcinogenesis. Vaginal microecology acts as a host defense barrier, and its dysbiosis may affect HPV clearance. The interplay among microbial diversity, viral load, and sexually transmitted pathogens remains unclear. METHODS: This cross-sectional study enrolled 330 women from a gynecological clinic in Shanghai (December 2025 - February 2026). HR-HPV genotyping and viral load were determined by fluorescence quantitative PCR. Vaginal culturable bacteria were identified using MALDI-TOF MS, and c

Oral and Maxillofacial Infections-A Bacterial and Clinical Cross-Section.

The treatment of oral and maxillofacial infections is based on a recognized algorithm that may require modification under the influence of various local and systemic factors. The aim of this study was to present a comprehensive and microbiological profile of oral and maxillofacial infections, and explore possible correlations between the course of an infection and selected systemic factors based on the medical records of 329 patients affected by the disease. We identified most common clinical, demographic, bacterial, and laboratory parameters specific for these infections. There were statistic

Uncovering antibody cross-reaction dynamics in influenza A infections.

MOTIVATION: Influenza viruses are a cause of large outbreaks and pandemics with high death tolls. A key obstacle is that flu vaccines have inconsistent performance, in the best cases up to 60% effectiveness, but it can be as low as 10%. Uncovering the hidden pathways of how antibodies (Abs) induced by one influenza strain are effective against another, cross-reaction, is a central vexation for the design of universal flu vaccines. RESULTS: We conceive a stochastic model that successfully represents the antibody cross-reactive data from mice infected with H3N2 influenza strains and further val

Studies on serological cross-reaction in sequential flavivirus infections.

Acute- and convalescent-phase sera from patients with dengue (DEN) hemorrhagic fever (DHF) and Japanese encephalitis (JE) that contained pre-existing flavivirus antibodies were tested for cross-reacting antibodies to DEN, JE and yellow fever (YF) viruses by a neutralization (N) test. A fourfold or greater rise in N antibody titer in the convalescent-phase was considered significant. Of 39 DHF cases, obtained at Chiang Mai University Hospital, Thailand, 15 (38.5%) showed a rise in DEN antibody titer, while another 15 (38.5%) showed a significant rise in both DEN and JE N antibody titers.
