During a randomized double-blind placebo-controlled study testing the efficacy of itraconazole for prophylaxis of systemic and mucosal fungal infections in patients with acquired immune deficiency syndrome, 298 patients were enrolled with 295 evaluable. Of those, 46 patients were considered prophylaxis failures because of recurrent oral or esophageal candidiasis. Oropharyngeal fungal cultures were taken at the time of suspected thrush or Candida esophagitis, but not at baseline. All of the Candida spp. isolates were cultured on CHROMagar Candida medium then identified using API 20 AUX strips.

Isolates of Mycobacterium tuberculosis derived from patients with AIDS from a single hospital in Rio de Janeiro were typed using a standardized RFLP technique detecting IS6110 polymorphism. Nineteen isolates were obtained from 15 different patients. Eleven distinct IS6110 patterns were found, with 4 banding patterns shared by 2 patients. Using pulsed-field gel electrophoresis, DNA fingerprints of eleven Legionella pneumophila isolates of serogroup 2 were generated. It was shown that two strains from a patient suffering from pneumonia as well as three environmental strains isolated from the shower in the hotel where the patient stayed 5 days before his illness were identical. Six strains of the same serogroup isolated from other sources were clearly separated. Thus, DNA fingerprints by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis are excellent epidemiological markers for the rarely occurring serogroup 2 of Legionella pneumophila.
