Salmonellosis in white-tailed deer fawns.

Experimental infection of white-tailed deer fawns with Salmonella meleagridis was accomplished. The fawns suffered clinical illness, similar to spontaneous cases observed in the field. This disease may be an important factor in fawn survival in wild herds based on the frequency with which Salmonellae could be isolated in wild fawns. The clinical disease was acute, characterized by rapid depression and dehydration. Death ensued in three of eight experimental cases. The survivors suffered clinical illness.

Tonsillar biopsy test for chronic wasting disease: Two sampling approaches in mule deer and white-tailed deer.

Preclinical antemortem testing of deer (Odocoileus spp.) for chronic wasting disease (CWD) can be important for determining prevalence rates and removing infected individuals from wild populations. Because samples with high numbers of tonsillar follicles are likely to provide earlier detection of CWD than samples with fewer follicles, the method of obtaining follicular samples may be critical when investigating disease prevalence. Between January 2003 and January 2005, white-tailed deer (O. virginianus) in southeast and southwest Minnesota and white-tailed and mule deer (O. hemionus) in Wind C

Transcervical artificial insemination in the brown brocket deer (Subulo gouazoubira): a promising method for assisted reproduction in deer.

The present study aimed to test the efficiency of transcervical artificial insemination techniques with cervical immobilization (TCAI-CI) or cervical traction (TCAI-CT), associated or not with the use of oxytocin (OT) as a protocol for cervical dilation, in the brown brocket deer (Subulo gouazoubira). The study was carried out in a crossover design using four adult females in two replicates with an interval of 60 days. Estrus was synchronized with oral melengestrol acetate (MGA) associated with estradiol benzoate and sodium cloprostenol. TCAI techniques were performed from 18 to 24 h after est

Molecular identification of the Cryptosporidium deer genotype in the Hokkaido sika deer (Cervus nippon yesoensis) in Hokkaido, Japan.

The protozoan Cryptosporidium occurs in a wide range of animal species including many Cervidae species. Fecal samples collected from the Hokkaido sika deer (Cervus nippon yesoensis), a native deer of Hokkaido, in the central, western, and eastern areas of Hokkaido were examined by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to detect infections with Cryptosporidium and for sequence analyses to reveal the molecular characteristics of the amplified DNA. DNA was extracted from 319 fecal samples and examined with PCR using primers for small-subunit ribosomal RNA (SSU-rRNA), actin, and 70-kDa heat shock protei

Multilocus genotyping of Giardia duodenalis isolates from red deer (Cervus elaphus) and roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) from Poland.

A total of 181 faecal samples were collected from wild cervids in two regions of Poland. Giardia cysts were detected in one faecal specimen from red deer and in two samples from roe deer. Fragments of the beta-giardin (bg) triose phosphate isomerase (tpi) and glutamate dehydrogenase (gdh) genes were successfully amplified from the Giardia isolate obtained from red deer, whereas only amplicons of bg and gdh were obtained from Giardia isolates derived from two roe deer. The result of genotyping and phylogenetic analysis showed that the G. duodenalis isolate from red deer belonged to sub-assembla

Peritoneal sarcomatoid mesothelioma in a sika deer.

A slaughtered 2-year-old female sika deer (Cervus nippon yesoensis) had diffusely distributed multinodular lesions on the serosal surface of the peritoneal cavity and several nodules in the pleural cavity. Histologically, they were composed of proliferating spindle-shaped neoplastic cells, arranged in a fascicular fashion. The cells in the invasive foci transitioned from a sarcomatoid to an epithelioid appearance. Immunohistochemically, both the spindle-shaped and epithelioid cells were at least focally positive for pancytokeratin, vimentin, calretinin, α-SMA, and desmin. From these findings,

Cryopreservation of Sambar deer semen in Thailand.

Little is known of the different freezing and thawing techniques for post-thaw survival of spermatozoa in Sambar deer. So, this study determined the effect of seminal plasma, egg yolk and glycerol extenders and their concentrations, plus cooling, freezing, and thawing protocols on the post-thaw quality of their semen. Semen samples were collected by electro-ejaculation from four Thai Sambar deer stags (Cervus unicolor equinus). As evaluated by post-thaw progressive motility and acrosome integrity removal of seminal plasma was beneficial; Tris-egg yolk was the most efficient extender; a 20% egg

Deer, predators, and the emergence of Lyme disease.

Lyme disease is the most prevalent vector-borne disease in North America, and both the annual incidence and geographic range are increasing. The emergence of Lyme disease has been attributed to a century-long recovery of deer, an important reproductive host for adult ticks. However, a growing body of evidence suggests that Lyme disease risk may now be more dynamically linked to fluctuations in the abundance of small-mammal hosts that are thought to infect the majority of ticks. The continuing and rapid increase in Lyme disease over the past two decades, long after the recolonization of deer, s

Bacterial diseases of farmed deer and bison.

The most important aerobic bacterial diseases of farmed deer and bison include bovine tuberculosis, Johne's disease (paratuberculosis), yersiniosis, leptospirosis, brucellosis, pasteurellosis, anthrax, salmonellosis and colibacillosis. Anaerobic bacterial infections affecting the same animals include necrobacillosis and a number of clostridial diseases such as tetanus, blackleg, malignant oedema and pulpy kidney. The relative importance of these diseases will vary throughout the world according to timing and circumstance, but bovine tuberculosis and Johne's disease are likely to present the mo

Syndactylism and brachygnathia in a white-tailed deer.

A white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) fawn was presented to the Southeastern Cooperative Wildlife Disease Study for examination of brachygnathia and syndactylous front feet. The hoof keratin of digits 3 and 4 was completely fused and typical sole integument covered the palmar surface between the primary digits. Based on a radiographic examination, there was fusion of the epiphyses of the first phalanges of digits 3 and 4 in both feet. In the right foot the proximal metaphyses of the first phalanges of digits 3 and 4 were fused.

Nasal carcinoma in a captive Eld's deer.

A 7-year-old Eld's deer (Cervus eldii) developed a swelling rostromedial to the left eye in association with signs of weakness, blindness, and discomfort. By means of radiography and biopsy, the swelling was found to be a carcinoma of lining epithelium of the caudal nasal cavity and left frontal sinus. Within 2 weeks of initial observation, signs of neurologic involvement developed and the deer was euthanatized. Necropsy revealed metastasis to lungs, liver, kidneys, and abdominal lymph nodes.

Acute Toxoplasmosis among Canadian Deer Hunters Associated with Consumption of Undercooked Deer Meat Hunted in the United States.

We conducted a recent investigation in Quebec, Canada, concerning Canadian deer hunters who went to the United States to hunt deer and returned with symptoms of fever, severe headache, myalgia, and articular pain of undetermined etiology. Further investigation identified that a group of 10 hunters from Quebec attended a hunting retreat in Illinois (USA) during November 22-December 4, 2018. Six of the 10 hunters had similar symptoms and illness onset dates. Serologic tests indicated a recent toxoplasmosis infection for all symptomatic hunters, and the risk factor identified was consumption of u

Testicular atrophy in a mule deer population.

Monitoring mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) on a former plutonium production site along the Columbia River at the Hanford Site, Washington (USA) revealed 27 (23%) of 116 adult males had unusually shaped, velvet-covered antlers and abnormally developed testicles. We captured 32 males to examine age-class differences and the ratio of affected to unaffected deer and determine whether affected testicles were atrophic or hypoplastic. We found testicular atrophy in most deer with velvet-covered antlers, primarily in animals older than 5 yr. Deer had marked to extreme stages of testicular atrophy, ind
