Unstuck in time: episodic future thinking reduces delay discounting and cigarette smoking.

RATIONALE: Delay discounting, or the devaluation of delayed outcomes, appears to play an etiological role in tobacco and other substance-use disorders. OBJECTIVES: No human studies to our knowledge have been designed to examine whether experimental reductions in delay discounting produce concomitant reduction in drug use. METHODS: Using methods from prior studies on delay discounting and obesity, we examined the effects of episodic future thinking (EFT; a form of mental prospection) on delay discounting and cigarette self-administration in smokers. RESULTS: Consistent with prior data, EFT s

On Weight and Waiting: Delay Discounting in Anorexia Nervosa Pretreatment and Posttreatment.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with anorexia nervosa (AN) override the drive to eat, forgoing immediate rewards in favor of longer-term goals. We examined delay discounting and its neural correlates in AN before and after treatment to test a potential mechanism of illness persistence. METHODS: Inpatients with AN (n = 59) and healthy control subjects (HC, n = 39) performed a delay discounting task at two time points. A subset (n = 30 AN, n = 22 HC) participated in functional magnetic resonance imaging scanning during the task. The task consisted of a range of monetary choices with variable delay time

Pathological gambling severity is associated with impulsivity in a delay discounting procedure.

Research and clinical expertise indicates that impulsivity is an underlying feature of pathological gambling. This study examined the extent to which impulsive behavior, defined by the rate of discounting delayed monetary rewards, varies with pathological gambling severity, assessed by the South Oaks Gambling Screen (SOGS). Sixty-two pathological gamblers completed a delay discounting task, the SOGS, the Eysenck impulsivity scale, the Addiction Severity Index (ASI), and questions about gambling and substance use at intake to outpatient treatment for pathological gambling. In the delay discount

A novel method to assess delay discounting indicates greater ambivalence for delayed rewards.

Inspired by Warren K. Bickel, who introduced numerous procedural and conceptual innovations to the study of delay discounting, the present study seeks to further establish the validity of a delay discounting task that is able to assess degree of preference when making a choice. We examine the construct of ambivalence, which may provide methodological and conceptual advancements in the study of delay discounting. In a sample of 105 participants, individuals used a 100-point scale to indicate not only preference between immediate and delayed rewards but also the degree of that preference. Using

Asymmetry of the sulcal pattern of the anterior cingulate cortex modulates delay discounting.

Delay discounting (DD), the preference for smaller immediate over larger delayed rewards, is associated with impulsivity and cognitive control, representing a transdiagnostic process across different neuropsychiatric disorders. While previous neuroimaging studies have mainly focused on the functional neural substrates of DD, their anatomical correlates have received less attention. Based on accumulating evidence about the role of cortical sulci morphology as an indirect marker of fetal neurodevelopment, we examined the relationship between DD and the sulcal pattern of the anterior cingulate co

Delay discounting correlates with depression but does not predict relapse after antidepressant discontinuation.

Approximately one third of people with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) experience a relapse within six months of discontinuing antidepressant medication (ADM), however, reliable predictors of relapse following ADM discontinuation are currently lacking. A putative behavioural predictor is delay discounting, which measures a person's impatience to receive reward. Previous studies have linked delay discounting to both MDD and reduced serotonergic function, rendering it a plausible candidate predictor. In this multi-site study we measured delay discounting in participants with remitted MDD (N = 97

Delay discounting violations vary by adolescent sociodemographics: Excluding nonsystematic data may bias conclusions.

Delay discounting tasks are increasingly used across psychology to examine self-regulation and value-based decision making. These tasks assess how individuals devalue rewards as delays to receipt increase, with responses expected to follow a decreasing pattern. When participants report higher valuation at longer delays-a violation of this expected trend-such responses are often flagged as nonsystematic and, in many cases, excluded from analysis. Although intended to optimize data quality, such exclusions may systematically bias samples and distort downstream inferences. Using data from the Ado

Delay discounting and narcissism: A meta-analysis with implications for narcissistic personality disorder.

Several psychiatric conditions (e.g., substance use, mood, and personality disorders) are characterized, in part, by greater delay discounting (DD)-a decision-making bias in the direction of preferring smaller, more immediate over larger, delayed rewards. Narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) is highly comorbid with substance use, mood, and other personality disorders, suggesting that DD may be a process underpinning risk for NPD as well. This meta-analysis examined associations between DD and theoretically distinct, clinically relevant dimensions of narcissism (i.e., grandiosity, entitlemen

Measuring Sexual Risk-Taking: A Systematic Review of the Sexual Delay Discounting Task.

The Sexual Delay Discounting Task (SDDT; Johnson & Bruner, 2012) is a behavioral economic task that assesses sexual risk-taking by measuring likelihood of immediate and delayed condom use. The SDDT is ecologically valid and has been used to test effects of various substances on sexual risk-taking. However, considerable variety in implementation, analysis, and reporting of the SDDT may limit rigor and reproducibility of findings. The current review synthesized studies that used the SDDT to evaluate these possible variabilities systematically. A two-step search (citation-tracking and keyword-bas

Development of a cortical delay discounting assay: a potential biomarker of externalizing disorders.

BACKGROUND: People who tend to impulsively choose smaller, sooner rewards over larger, later rewards are at increased risk for addiction and psychiatric disorders. A neurobiological measure of the tendency to overvalue immediate gratification could facilitate the study of individuals who are susceptible to these mental disorders. The objective of this research was to develop a cortical assay of impulsive choice for immediate rewards. METHODS: A cortex-based assay of impulsive choice was developed using 1105 healthy adults from the Human Connectome Project, and then cross-validated in two inde

Reinforcer pathology: Common neural substrates for delay discounting and snack purchasing in prediabetics.

Reinforcer pathology theory stipulates that individuals with both (a) high preference for smaller, immediate over larger, delayed rewards; and (b) high demand for unhealthy commodities are uniquely susceptible to poor health outcomes. Specifically, two behavioral economic tasks (delay discounting, assessing preference for smaller, immediate or larger, delayed rewards; and purchasing, assessing purchases of commodities over changes in price) have been independently associated with conditions such as overweight/obesity and problem substance use. In the present study, we examined possible shared

Role of delay discounting in predicting change in HBA1c for individuals with prediabetes.

The majority of people with prediabetes transition to type 2 diabetes. Weight gain is a known predictor of increasing the risk of diabetes, but another reason may be a focus on immediate rewards and discounting of the future. Delay discounting (DD: devaluation of future consequences) is related to obesity and poor glycemic control in persons with type 2 diabetes. This study was designed to assess whether changes in DD are associated with HbA1c change beyond BMI change in individuals with prediabetes. Hierarchical regression showed changes in BMI (p = 0.008) and the $1000 DD task (p = 0.04) wer

Temporal Discounting and the Tendency to Delay Gratification across the Eating Disorder Spectrum.

Bulimia nervosa (BN) and binge eating disorder (BED) have been associated with poorer reward-related inhibitory control, reflected by a reduced tendency to delay gratification. The opposite has been reported in anorexia nervosa (AN), but differences have not been directly compared across eating disorders (EDs). This study investigated self-reported (Delaying Gratification Inventory) and task-based (temporal discounting) inhibitory control in 66 women with an ED and 28 healthy controls (HCs). Poorer task-based inhibitory control was observed in the BN compared with the AN group and poorer self-

Temporal delay discounting in acutely ill and weight-recovered patients with anorexia nervosa.

BACKGROUND: Patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) are characterized by a very low body weight but readily give up immediate rewards (food) for long-term goals (slim figure), which might indicate an unusual level of self-control. This everyday clinical observation may be quantifiable in the framework of the anticipation-discounting dilemma. METHOD: Using a cross-sectional design, this study compared the capacity to delay reward in 34 patients suffering from acute AN (acAN), 33 weight-recovered AN patients (recAN) and 54 healthy controls. We also used a longitudinal study to reassess 21 acAN pati

From Delay Discounting to Gambling Harm: Gambling-related Cognitive Distortions as Mediating Pathways.

Delay discounting is a well-established behavioral vulnerability marker across addictive disorders, including gambling disorder. However, the cognitive processes through which steep delay discounting relates to gambling problems remain unclear. This study investigates gambling-related cognitive distortions as potential correlates linking impulsive decision-making to gambling harm, addressing the gap between distal neurocognitive risk markers and proximal addiction severity. In a sample of active gamblers (N = 1484), we administered a delay discounting task alongside self-report measures of gam

Regulation of Craving: Neural Correlates and the Role of Stress and Delay Discounting.

Regulation of craving (ROC) by focusing on long-term negative consequences of drug use has been shown to successfully reduce subjective craving. This process is supported by the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC), which exerts control over reward and value signals in the ventral striatum (VS) and ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC). As stress impairs cognitive control and addiction is characterized by altered value computations manifesting in delay discounting, we examined how these factors interact with ROC and its neural correlates to better understand the use of ROC in high-risk situ

Risk-Taking, Delay Discounting, and Time Perspective in Adolescent Gamblers: An Experimental Study.

Previous research has demonstrated that adult pathological gamblers (compared to controls) show risk-proneness, foreshortened time horizon, and preference for immediate rewards. No study has ever examined the interplay of these factors in adolescent gambling. A total of 104 adolescents took part in the research. Two equal-number groups of adolescent non-problem and problem gamblers, defined using the South Oaks Gambling Screen-Revised for Adolescents, were administered the Balloon Analogue Risk Task (BART), the Consideration of Future Consequences (CFC-14) scale, and the Monetary Choice Questi

Biased and less sensitive: A gamified approach to delay discounting in heroin addiction.

INTRODUCTION: People with addiction will continue to use drugs despite adverse long-term consequences. We hypothesized (a) that this deficit persists during substitution treatment, and (b) that this deficit might be related not only to a desire for immediate gratification, but also to a lower sensitivity for optimal decision making. We investigated how individuals with a history of heroin addiction perform (compared to healthy controls) in a virtual reality delay discounting task. This novel task adds to established measures of delay discounting an assessment of the optimality of decisions, es

Delay discounting in opioid use disorder: Differences between heroin and prescription opioid users.

BACKGROUND: Among those with opioid use disorder, heroin use is associated with poorer prognosis relative to use of prescription opioids alone. However, relatively little is known about distinguishing features between those who use heroin relative to those who use prescription opioids. In the present study we evaluated differences in delay discounting in those with opioid use disorder based on primary opioid of use. Delay discounting is associated with a range of negative outcomes and is an important therapeutic target in this population. METHODS: Treatment-seeking adults with opioid dependen

Interactive Relationships Between Sex-Related Alcohol Expectancies and Delay Discounting on Risky Sex.

BACKGROUND: Sex-related alcohol expectancies reflect the degree to which a person believes alcohol will affect her or his sexual behavior. Sex-related alcohol expectancies have been found to be predictors of drinking in sexual situations and engagement in risky sexual behavior after drinking. However, less is known about individual characteristics that may moderate these associations. Building upon recent evidence that steep delay discounting is associated with alcohol-related sexual risk taking, this study aimed to test the hypothesis that the associations between sex-related alcohol expectan
