Spatial distribution of Dermacentor reticulatus tick in Slovakia in the beginning of the 21st century.

A new field survey monitoring the spatial distribution of Dermacentor (D.) reticulatus (Fabricius, 1794) tick in Slovakia was carried out in 2005-2008 in order to record changes in its distribution when compared to former studies. Last surveys on the geographical distribution were conducted in 1950s and 1970s and the presence of D. reticulatus was determined along the rivers in the south-east (Latorica) as well as in the south-west (Morava, Dunaj) Slovakia. In the present survey new areas with D. reticulatus occurrence were detected, providing evidence that this tick species has extended its r

Transcriptome analysis of the salivary glands of Dermacentor andersoni Stiles (Acari: Ixodidae).

Amongst blood-feeding arthropods, ticks of the family Ixodidae (hard ticks) are vectors and reservoirs of a greater variety of infectious agents than any other ectoparasite. Salivary glands of ixodid ticks secrete a large number of pharmacologically active molecules that not only facilitate feeding but also promote establishment of infectious agents. Genomic, proteomic and immunologic characterization of bioactive salivary gland molecules are, therefore, important as they offer new insights into molecular events occurring at the tick-host interface and they have implications for development of

Detection of Babesia caballi and Babesia equi in Dermacentor nuttalli adult ticks.

Ticks play an important role in human and veterinary medicine particularly due to their ability to transmit protozoan pathogens. In this study we have demonstrated that polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and nested PCR methods enabled detection of Babesia caballi and Babesia equi in field isolates of Dermacentor nuttalli adult ticks from Mongolia. Primers specific for 218 bp fragment merozoite antigen 1 (EMA-1) gene of B. equi successfully amplified products from all samples of D. nuttalli adult ticks while primers for the 430 bp fragment product from BC48 gene of B. caballi amplified products fr

[Endemic risk of Babesia canis by Dermacentor reticulatus in Germany. An epidemiologic study].

During the period of January 1995 to January 1997, Babesia canis infections were diagnosed in 127 dogs, 65 of them had stayed in foreign countries where Dermacentor reticulatus is endemic, namely France, Austria and Hungary, or in the area Offenburg/Kehl/Freiburg i. Breisgau (Germany). Two dogs being positive for Babesia never had left Germany before and had not been in the region Offenburg/Kehl/Freiburg i. Breisgau. Concurrent tick infestations were reported for all of the 67 dogs. For 10 dogs which had travelled to Hungary and France the ticks were diagnosed as D. reticulatus. In Germany, ec

High protective efficacy of a recombinant Fer2 vaccine against Dermacentor marginatus infestations.

Dermacentor marginatus is an important disease vector in China, yet current control methods remain heavily reliant on chemical acaricides. This study evaluated the vaccine potential of Ferritin 2 from D. marginatus (DmFer2). The DmFer2 gene was cloned, expressed as a recombinant DmFer2 (rDmFer2) in a prokaryotic expression system, and subsequently used to immunize rabbits. Immunization elicited high anti-rDmFer2 antibody titers, which peaked at a detectable maximum of 1:25,600 on day 35, and significantly reduced tick fecundity and altered tick feeding kinetics in challenge trials. Genetic diversity of Dermacentor nitens (Acari: Ixodidae) collected on horses from western Cuba.

The tropical horse tick, Dermacentor nitens Neumann, 1897, has a wide distribution throughout the Neotropics, and is a vector of protozoan haemoparasites that cause equine piroplasmosis. Despite this, little is known about the genetic diversity of this tick species, particularly in Cuba, where horses are important domestic animals used in agriculture and for transportation. The objective of this study was to assess the magnitude of genetic variation in 115 D. nitens adults (57 females and 58 males) collected from horses in the Cuban province of Mayabeque using sequence data of two mitochondria

Ecological niche and rickettsial risk mapping of Dermacentor nuttalli in Inner Mongolia, China.

INTRODUCTION: Dermacentor nuttalli is the most prevalent and impactful tick species in Inner Mongolia, and serves as an important vector for a variety of pathogenic microorganisms. METHODS: In this study, an optimized ecological niche model was used to analyze the distribution of suitable habitats for D. nuttalli. Combined with pathogen detection data from the salivary glands of 8512 adult ticks collected across Inner Mongolia from 2015 to 2025 and relevant literature, we identified 20 tick-associated pathogens. Additionally, we integrated multiple datasets including environmental and ecologi

Dermacentor reticulatus, a putative vector of Babesia cf. microti (syn. Theileria annae) piroplasm.

Babesia cf. microti (syn. Theileria annae, Babesia microti-like, Babesia vulpes) is a recently recognized tick-borne piroplasm that infects domestic and wild carnivores. Although Ixodes hexagonus is considered as the leading candidate responsible for the transmission, its capacity to act as a competent vector has not yet been confirmed. This study reports the occurrence of B.cf. microti in unfed Dermacentor reticulatus for the first time, suggesting that this tick species may be implicated in the life cycle of this canine parasite. Out of 128 questing D. reticulatus ticks collected in eastern

[Dermacentor reticulatus (Fabricius, 1794)--distribution, biology and vector for Babesia canis in Germany].

This work deals with occurrence, distribution as well as biology and vectorial capacity of the ornate dog tick (Dermacentor (D.) reticulatus). Until 30 years ago this tick has only been described in a few natural foci in southern Germany. Its distribution has however expanded in the course of the last years. With the exception of northern Germany it is now covering large areas of Germany. This is particularly the case in the Upper Rhine Valley, Saarland and the Mark Brandenburg. However, it is endemic in many other areas of Germany as well. The transformation of agricultural land into fallow l

Rickettsiae of the spotted fever isolated from Dermacentor marginatus ticks in South Germany.

Rickettsiae of the spotted fever group were detected by haemocyte test in 8 (12%) of 51 partially engorged Dermacentor marginatus females collected in March/April 1975 in South Germany. Four strains of rickettsiae were isolated from ticks positive in haemocyte test. It was concluded with isolated strain BRD-1 and homologous immune guinea pig, hamster and mouse sera in CF cross reactions with antigens and immune sera against other members of the SF group, that the newly isolated strains are similar, almost undistinguishable from Rickettsia slovaca.

Uptake and fecal excretion of Coxiella burnetii by Ixodes ricinus and Dermacentor marginatus ticks.

BACKGROUND: The bacterium Coxiella burnetii is the etiological agent of Q fever and is mainly transmitted via inhalation of infectious aerosols. DNA of C. burnetii is frequently detected in ticks, but the role of ticks as vectors in the epidemiology of this agent is still controversial. In this study, Ixodes ricinus and Dermacentor marginatus adults as well as I. ricinus nymphs were fed on blood spiked with C. burnetii in order to study the fate of the bacterium within putative tick vectors. METHODS: Blood-feeding experiments were performed in vitro in silicone-membrane based feeding units. T

Analysis of the environmental and host-related factors affecting the distribution of the tick Dermacentor marginatus.

Understanding and responding to the ecological, social and economic conditions that facilitate disease emergence and transmission represents a substantial challenge for epidemiologists and health professionals. In this article we integrate knowledge about the human and the vector population, to provide a context from which to examine the underlying causal factors of D. marginatus-borne diseases emergence in the study area. Within this framework we analyse the biotic and abiotic factors that drive D. marginatus population dynamics and the role of its typical host for dispersal. These investigat

Spotted fever group rickettsiae in Dermacentor reticulatus and Haemaphysalis punctata ticks in the UK.

BACKGROUND: Spotted fever group (SFG) rickettsiae have recently been identified for the first time in UK ticks. This included the findings of Rickettsia helvetica in Ixodes ricinus and Rickettsia raoultii in Dermacentor reticulatus. This paper further investigates the occurrence of SFG rickettsiae in additional geographically distinct populations of D. reticulatus, and for the first time, investigates the occurrence of SFG rickettsiae in UK populations of Haemaphysalis punctata ticks. METHODS: Questing D. reticulatus and H. punctata were collected at a number of sites in England and Wales. DN

Epidemiology of canine babesiosis in relation to the activity of Dermacentor reticulatus in southern Jura (France).

Dates of onset of canine babesiosis within a hyperendemic focus in France (Rhone Valley, south of Jura and north of the Alps) were compared to the seasonal population level of the adult stage of Dermacentor reticulatus over a 12-month period (December 1982-November 1983). Cases of babesiosis occurred in spring and fall when adult D. reticulatus were active. The fluctuations of the vector tick population and the onsets of canine babesiosis were also correlated with climatic changes: no tick activity or clinical cases of disease were detected in winter (low temperature) or in summer. The slight

[The meadow tick Dermacentor reticulatus in natural foci of tick-borne encephalitis in Udmurtia].

In southern Udmurtia, where occur both Dermacentor reticulatus and Ixodes persulcatus, in the years of high abundance of small mammals feeding periods of larvae and nymphs of these ticks coincide completely. The duration of simultaneous parasitism of preimago of the above ixodid species on animals is of epidemiological significance as far as within this period the infection of young stages of D. reticulatus with the virus of tick-borne encephalitis occurs. This is confirmed by the isolation of I strain of the virus from D. reticulatus collected at the state of engorged nymphs on hosts common w

Dermacentor (Indocentor) auratus Supino 1897: Potential geographic range, and medical and veterinary significance.

Dermacentor (Indocentor) auratus Supino, 1897 occurs in many regions of Southeast Asia and South Asia. In many regions of Southeast Asia and South Asia, targeted tick sampling and subsequent screening of collected D. auratus ticks have detected pathogenic bacteria and viruses in D. auratus. These disease-causing pathogens that have been detected in D. auratus include Anaplasma, Bartonella, Borrelia, Rickettsia (including spotted fever group rickettsiae), African swine fever virus, Lanjan virus, and Kyasanur forest disease virus. Although D. auratus predominantly infests wild pigs, this tick is
