Indirect action of sun together with different exogenous agents (systemic medications and topically applied compounds) sometimes may result in phototoxicic and photoallergic reactions. Drug-induced photosensitivity reactions refer to the development of cutaneous disease as a result of the combined effects of a drug and light (mostly spectrum within the UVA and visible light range or UVB range). The aim of the review was to show the prominent features of phototoxic and photoallergic reactions, which occur in sun-exposed areas, including face, neck, hands and forearms. Phototoxic reactions are s

The use of veterinary medicines and medicated feed has a potential for the exposure of agricultural workers to pharmaceuticals with phototoxic and photoallergic side-effects. We present a 67-year-old self-employed farmer and pig breeder with a 22-year history of severe persistent photosensitivity following photoallergic contact dermatitis due to direct occupational dermal and airborne contact to chlorpromazine (sedative) and olaquindox (antibiotic and animal growth promoter, AGP). His first dermatitis symptoms appeared at the age of 45 when the pig breeding was intensified. He showed erythemat

Two cases that illustrate the risks attendant on the therapeutic use of natural medications by laypersons are reported. In the first case, the application of a mustard plaster triggered toxic dermatitis. In the second case, a session in a solarium after the external application of bergamot oil resulted in a phototoxic reaction.

Various adverse cutaneous reactions may occur as a result of exposure to wood dust or solid woods. These include allergic contact dermatitis, irritant contact dermatitis and, more rarely, contact urticaria, photoallergic and phototoxic reactions. Also cases of erythema multiforme-like reactions have been reported. Contact dermatitis, both allergic and irritant, is most frequently provoked by exotic woods, e.g. wood of the Dalbergia spp., Machaerium scleroxylon or Tectona grandis. Cutaneous reactions are usually associated with manual or machine woodworking, in occupational setting or as a hobb

The purpose of this study was to determine the concentration, vehicle, and UVA dose suitable for avoiding phototoxic reactions while revealing photoallergic reactions to chlorpormazine (CPZ) in photopatch testing. Photopatch tests were performed on 27 volunteers with CPZ concentrations between 0.05% and 1% in water or Plastibase with UVA doses of 4 or 7 J/cm2. Photopatch tests were also carried out on 1 patient with photoallergic contact dermatitis to CPZ and an increased UVA sensitivity. The same concentration of CPZ caused phototoxic reactions less frequently and less intensely in Plastibase

BACKGROUND: Previous studies at single academic institutions have identified variations in the prevalence of photodermatoses among racial gr … acks were identified for polymorphous light eruption (more common in Blacks), photoallergic contact dermatitis, phototoxic drug eruption, phytophotodermatitis, porphyria, and solar urticaria (more common in Whites). The most commonly diagnosed photodermatoses were polymorphous light eruption (total 672), and photodermatitis not otherwise specified (total 189).
