Healthy adult male albino rats were subjected to inhalation of increasing doses of detergent (dioctyl sodium sulfo-succinate) aerosol ranging from 100 mg to 500 mg. Administration of 500 mg of detergent aerosol resulted in peribronchial and focal alveolar oedema in 3 out of 5 animals. The lungs of control animals which were subjected to inhalation of vehicle aerosol (ethanol and saline) did not show any abnormality. It is possible that pulmonary oedema observed in detergent aerosol inhalation may be due to the action of detergents on the surfactant system of the lung.

The lymphokine release and antibody production were assessed in the peripheral blood of 52 and 48 cases of amoebic liver abscess respectively, by employing detergent dissected membrane proteins (DDMP) of axenic Entamoeba histolytica (NIH:200). Lymphokine release by T lymphocytes in response to both DDMP and whole amoebic lysate (WAL) was performed by leukocyte migration inhibition test. This study develops an optimized hybrid system to treat sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)-contaminated wastewater that synergistically integrates microbial biodegradation with physical adsorption within a Response Surface Methodology (RSM) framework. A highly effective SDS-degrading bacterium, Serratia plymuthica strain BSU-AH-03, was isolated from hydrocarbon-contaminated soil. INTRODUCTION: We report an interesting case of monosymptomatic hypochondriacal psychosis (MHP) which, because of its rarity, tends to be neglected in differential diagnosis. The patient presented with delusions including smelling the odour of detergent and thinking detergent was circulating in his blood. He had many medical and paramedical treatments over 2½ years, and was finally diagnosed with MHP.
METHOD: Risperidone was then started, and gradually increased.
RESULTS: A significant improvement was observed. However, risperidone was discontinued, because of its hypomanic effects.

BACKGROUND: Pooling of plasma donations increases the risk for blood-borne infections. In solvent/detergent (SD)-treated plasma, lipid-enveloped viruses are efficiently inactivated. This method, however, does not affect non-lipid-enveloped viruses. Detergent substances are important components of cleansing materials. Their detergent cleansing action may also result in skin toxicity. Methods for the evaluation of their toxic effect on the skin surface are reviewed stressing the usefulness of the soap chamber test, and newer in vitro cultural techniques. The action of detergents in promoting desquamation and removing intercorneocyte materials is also discussed. Finally, the point is made that cleansing can also be accomplished with non-detergent containing cleaners.

The authors elaborated a method of isolation under industrial conditions of Shigella sonnei surface antigens by the treatment of the culture with a detergent (sodium laurylsulfate). The antigens obtained possessed a much lesser toxicity in comparison with the tryptic ones. A method of preparation of a detergent Sonne monovaccine with an increased antigen content (1.3 mg/ml) was described. Experimental series of the preparation were tested on 38 volunteers. A lower reactogenicity of the detergent vaccine (in comparison with the tryptic) and its marked immunological efficacy was demonstrated.
