Women undergoing medical abortions require different types of pain relief, severe pain being a problem. This study compared the pain relief required during a medical abortion at the Departments of Gynecology in Kalmar and Karlskrona. The case notes of 100 women at each department were examined. Coronary sinus pacing was evaluated in 10 pigs with propoxyphene induced cardiac failure. During the early phase of intoxication cardiac pacing improved cardiac function slightly but significantly worsened it in severely intoxicated animals. An 18-year-old woman suffered cardiac arrest and became comatose after ingesting a large amount of proxyphene and salicylates. Six days after admission, her pupils, initially miotic, became fixed and dilated. On the seventh day disc edema developed. This was due to optic neuritis from acute Darvon overdose. Within eight weeks the disc edema resolved into a pale white atrophy with severe loss of vision. This is the first reported case of optic atrophy after propoxyphene overdose.

A mortality study of 997 patients registered for treatment at the Wellington Drug Clinic since 1971 was undertaken by examining the New Zealand death records. Sixty-seven known deaths were reported. The mortality rates were increased 11.5 times under the age of 25 years, and 5.8 times for age 25-34 years, but not significantly thereafter. Dextropropoxyphene and indomethacin were employed as a standard for analgesic and anti-inflammatory studies, respectively.
