Disseminated Diaper Dermatitis With Concomitant Body Rash: A Case Report.

Diaper dermatitis is a rash typically localized to the genital area and may have various etiologies, including irritant and allergic contact dermatitis. In most cases, it resolves on its own with minimal to no medical intervention, and when treatment is necessary, it usually responds promptly. Here, we present a prolonged case of diaper dermatitis accompanied by a nearly full-body rash that was resistant to initial treatment with steroids, antibiotics, and antifungals.

Effect of oral zinc supplements on diaper rash in normal infants.

A total of 89 normal newborn infants received 10mg oral zinc supplements daily for 4 months and 90 others received a placebo. The zinc supplemented group had a significant reduction in the incidence of diaper rash, and they gained slightly more in height and weight, although the growth differences were not significant.

Metabolic alkalosis secondary to baking soda treatment of a diaper rash.

A 4-month-old infant was seen with hypokalemic metabolic alkalosis that was associated with prior application of liberal amounts of sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) to a diaper rash. After exclusion of other etiologies of the infant's acid-base disturbance, a complete resolution occurred following discontinuation of the baking soda applications. This case report provides a reminder of the significant side effects that may result from the excessive use of a seemingly harmless household substance.

Betamethasone cream to treat diapers rash causing Cushing syndrome.

OBJECTIVES: Betamethasone causing iatrogenic Cushing's syndrome (CS) in infants are rarely reported. CASE PRESENTATION: In this case report, there were severe signs of CS, such as considerable weight acceleration and concurrent height deceleration, hirsutism and ecchymosis of the face, and buffalo pad, which are often found in adults. Clobetasol propionate, diflucortolone valerate, and dexamethasone nasal sprays were used in the majority of previously reported cases of corticosteroid abuse, whereas this is the first case of CS in an infant as a result of the use of betamethasone cream, also k

Anaphylaxis to cutaneous exposure to milk protein in a diaper rash ointment.

A 12-month-old boy, with a strong history of cow's milk allergy, developed two episodes of anaphylaxis following cutaneous application of a casein containing ointment to an inflamed diaper area. RAST testing showed a significant elevation in specific IgE antibodies to milk and milk proteins. This experience suggests that children who are highly sensitive to milk may have severe allergic reactions on cutaneous exposure to milk or milk products.

Hair zinc, scalp hair quantity, and diaper rash in normal infants.

Hair zinc concentration was determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry in 308 normal newborn infants and 199 normal infants aged one to twelve months. Hair zinc concentration declined from 204 micrograms/gm at birth to 112 micrograms/gm at age eight months, and then rose to 144 micrograms/gm at age twelve months. Diaper rash was significantly associated with reduced hair zinc, and infants with the least hair had lower zinc levels than infants with the most hair. The data indicate that hair loss and diaper rash found in normal infants is significantly associated with a reduction in hair …

Efficacy of petrolatum jelly for the prevention of diaper rash: a randomized clinical trial.

PURPOSE: To assess the efficacy of petrolatum jelly for the prevention of diaper rash and to evaluate the relationship between the occurrence of diaper rash and certain treatments and type of nutrition. DESIGN AND METHODS: A randomized clinical trial was carried out with two parallel groups (n = 213) at the neonatal care unit of Donostia University Hospital in San Sebastián, Guipuzcoa Province, Spain. RESULTS: There was a lower incidence of diaper rash in the experimental group with petrolatum jelly (17.1%) than the control group (22.2%), but the difference was not statistically significant …

Comparison of the Effectiveness of New Material Diapers versus Standard Diapers for the Prevention of Diaper Rash in Chinese Babies: A Double-Blinded, Randomized, Controlled, Cross-Over Study.

BACKGROUND: Diaper rash, also known as diaper dermatitis (DD), is a very common skin condition in infants, and use of disposable diapers with breathable materials is an effective approach for the management of diaper rash. In China, new material diapers and standard diapers are currently the two most commonly used disposable diapers. This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of new material diapers versus standard diaper for the prevention of diaper rash in Chinese babies. METHODS: A total of 80 eligible babies admitted to Shanghai Skin Diseases Hospital during the period from June throug…

Safety evaluation for ingredients used in baby care products: Consideration of diaper rash.

Diaper rash can adversely impact the barrier properties of skin, with potential implications for increased absorption of chemicals through the skin, and this should be accounted for in any exposure assessment used in the safety evaluation of consumer products used in the diaper ("nappy") area. In the absence of a quantitative evaluation of the potential impact of diaper rash, a default assumption of 100% dermal penetration is often made for substances applied in the diaper area. We consider here the extent, duration and severity of diaper rash and make a recommendation for conservative assumpt…
