Twenty cases of Dyphillobothrium pacificum (fish tapeworm) infections were prospectively studied to determine whether this tapeworm is associated with megaloblastic anemia, as commonly reported for D. latum infections. The most frequent symptoms were fatigue and mild abdominal pain, which were identified in approximately 66.6% of the 18 patients interviewed. Fourteen patients received treatment with niclosamide and all were cured. The other six patients spontaneously eliminated the tapeworms. One patient, who also had chronic diabetes and gastric atrophy, had low vitamin B12 levels and megalob

To clarify the definitive hosts of Diphyllobothrium klebanovskii in the Far East, 2198 individuals of 18 terrestrial predatory and omnivorous mammal species were surveyed. It was established that 47.1 +/- 8.56% of brown bears, one of the two dissected black bears, 1.7 +/- 1.2% of wolves, 1.6 +/- 0.71% of dogs, 0.3 +/- 0.14% of American minks and 2.8 +/- 2.75% of pigs were invaded by a tapeworm. Obligatory hosts of the parasite were brown and black bears, and the remaining species were optional hosts of limited significance in maintaining parasite circulation.

Praziquantel (Droncit) is a new anthelminthic agent with a strikingly wide therapeutic index. The efficiency of the drug against Diphyllobothrium latum was tested in vivo and in vitro. With a drug dose of 50 mg/kg, artificially infected hamsters were completely cured. The threshold value of the active dose was between 2-5 and 10-0 mg/kg. Clinical trials with Praziquantel against human diphyllobothriasis show great promise, all of ten patients treated with 25-0 mg/kg of the drug being cured. Praziquantel had little effect on larval or adult diphyllobothriids in vitro.

The effect of low temperature exposure on the motility of Diphyl-lobothrium latum plerocercoids was studied, with the particular aim of finding the exposure that immobilizes all the larvae in fish freezing. Both isolated larvae immersed in normal horse serum and larvae enclosed in pieces of muscle tissue of the size of 1 cm3 were tested. The pieces of tissue containing a larva were placed in the middle of a plastic beaker filled with densely packed minced fish flesh. In the central part of this phantom, where the plerocercoids were situated, the temperature decline was considered to take place

Diphyllobothriasis, which is rarely described in Brazil, was reported initially as a travelers disease and as an accidental infection in individuals who ate raw freshwater fish. This report aims to present the case of a 20-year-old patient with confirmed Diphyllobothrium latum infection.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether praziquantel is effective against diphyllobothriasis nihonkaiense at doses less than the conventional dose.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Fourteen Japanese men with diphyllobopthriasis nihonkaiense were treated with a single administration of praziquantel at 5-10 mg/kg.
RESULTS: Twelve patients expelled a complete integrated Diphyllobothrium nihonkaiense with its scolex. One patient expelled an integrated D. nihonkaiense without its scolex, and one patient expelled 2 complete integrated D. nihonkaiense with their scolex, and an integrated D. nihonkaiense without its…

A 31-year-old man with no relevant medical history encountered a white, ribbon-shaped object, 15 cm long and approximately 1 cm wide, in his faeces. It turned out to be Diphyllobothrium latum, a tapeworm that has fish as the intermediate host. The patient had eaten raw fish and shellfish during a holiday in Brazil 5 months before. He recovered after a single dose of praziquantel.

Diphyllobothrium nihonkaiense is a large pseudophyllid cestode and one of the commonest parasites derived from fish in Japan. Three Japanese patients infected with D. nihonkaiense were treated with a single oral dose of 7, 23 or 25 mg/kg of praziquantel. All patients expelled the tapeworm with scolex, and no side effect was noted. This study indicates that single-dose treatment with praziquantel is effective against D. nihonkaiense infection.

Recently, it has been known that the treatment with paromomycin sulfate is effective against many kinds of tapeworm. Paromomycin sulfate was used for treating 56 patients with Diphyllobothrium latum aged 2 approximately 65 years old. Paromomycin was administered orally in the dose of 25 approximately 50 mg/kg. All cases with Diphyllobothriasis latum were successfully treated with paromomycin. The drug was well tolerated and no side effects were observed in any patients.
