[Drug-induced dysphonia].

Drug-induced dysphonia is a non-life-threatening adverse drug reaction, however, this complication can significantly worsen the quality of life of patients, especially those in voice-speaking professions. The aim of the work was to search for information about the prevalence, etiology, pathogenesis, and features of treatment and prevention of drug-induced dysphonia. In the case of some drugs, the true prevalence may be higher than described in the literature, due to the fact that dysphonia is in most cases mild, reversible and, in comparison with other undesirable drug reactions, rarely attrac…

Psychosis improved dysphonia.

We present the case of a 40-year-old single man with a diagnosis of Schizoaffective Disorder since 1989 and a comorbid diagnosis of functional (dissociative) dysphonia since 2011. Although receiving ongoing treatment from a Speech and Language Therapist, the patient's symptoms of dysphonia have remained prominent from the time of diagnosis in 2011 and have been particularly apparent during times of psychosocial and interpersonal stress. He had a dramatic and complete resolution of all dysphonic symptoms during an acute relapse of the psychosis in February 2013 and experienced a gradual re-emer…

Muscular tension dysphonia.

Muscular tension dysphonia (MTD) is a condition commonly seen in young and middle aged females. It is manifest by excess tension in the paralaryngeal and suprahyoid muscles, an open posterior glottic chink, larynx rise, and frequently mucosal changes on the vocal cords. These mucosal changes are usually fleshy vocal nodules. About 8% of vocal nodules are found in patients not exhibiting features of MTD. The two types of vocal nodules require different therapeutic approaches. One hundred patients out of 500 seen consecutively at the Voice Clinic at the University of British Columbia exhibited t…

Dysphonia and Laryngopharyngeal Reflux.

Dysphonia is a common symptom of laryngopharyngeal reflux disease (LPRD) and requires multimodal, patient-centered care to address. Challenges in diagnosing LPRD can also complicate treatment of nonspecific dysphonia symptoms. Careful history taking with sensitivity to cultural lifestyle components in each patient is critical to management. Surgical management of acid reflux is not always indicated for dysphonia and the risk to the vagus nerve during fundoplication can worsen dysphonia. There are low-risk nutraceutical therapies that have demonstrated clinical benefit in the literature, and th…

Dysphonia risk screening protocol.

OBJECTIVE: To propose and test the applicability of a dysphonia risk screening protocol with score calculation in individuals with and without dysphonia. METHOD: This descriptive cross-sectional study included 365 individuals (41 children, 142 adult women, 91 adult men and 91 seniors) divided into a dysphonic group and a non-dysphonic group. The protocol consisted of 18 questions and a score was calculated using a 10-cm visual analog scale. The measured value on the visual analog scale was added to the overall score, along with other partial scores. Speech samples allowed for analysis/assessm…

[Dysphonia following glyphosate exposition].

Glyphosate is a commonly used nonselective herbicide which inhibits plant growth through interference with the production of essential aromatic amino acids. Toxicity for humans has been reported after suicidal ingestion. Here we describe a 26-year-old teacher who used glyphosate correctly but suffered from severe dysphonia after some hours. Laryngostroboscopy revealed decreased vocal fold mobility suggesting innervation impairment. The symptoms resolved spontaneously 6 weeks later and vocal fold mobility returned to normal. Glyphosate neurotoxicity has been discussed in the literature therefor…

Recurrent dysphonia and acitretin.

We report the case of a woman complaining of dysphonia while she was treated by acitretin. Her symptoms totally regressed after drug withdrawal and reappeared when acitretin was reintroduced. To our knowledge, this is the first case of acitretin-induced dysphonia. This effect may be related to the pharmacological effect of this drug on mucous membranes.

Office evaluation of dysphonia.

The office evaluation of dysphonia is complex. Proper medical care requires an in-depth history and comprehensive physical examination. Diagnosis and treatment are aided by objective assessment and quantification of voice function. Scientific and technologic advances over the last decade have resulted in substantial advances in the medical evaluation of dysphonia.

Diagnosis of psychogenic dysphonia.

Background factors, symptoms and signs were analysed in 40 consecutive patients with psychogenic dysphonia. Their voice profile was compared with that of 40 patients with infectious laryngitis. The majority of the patients were young females, non-smokers, who were not professional voice users. Criteria for acute infectious laryngitis prior the voice disorder were met in no more than 10% of the patients. Nevertheless as many as 40% of the patients had been treated with various antibiotics. The prevalence of reported asthma/allergy-like symptoms was high, 37.5%. Perceptual analysis of voice prof…
