Ethnic variations in duration of untreated psychosis: report from the CRIS-FEP study.

OBJECTIVES: There is inconsistent evidence on the influence of ethnicity on duration of untreated psychosis (DUP). We investigated ethnic differences in DUP in a large epidemiological dataset of first episode psychosis patients in an inner city area of south London, UK. METHODS: We analysed data on 558 first episode psychosis patients at the South London and Maudsley NHS Trust, between 2010 and 2012. We performed multivariable logistic regression to estimate the odds of a short DUP (≤ 6 months) by ethnic group, controlling for confounders. RESULTS: There was no evidence that ethnicity is ass

Scoping review on noticing concerns in child development: a missing piece in the early intervention puzzle.

BACKGROUND: Between 13 and 32% of children in developed nations are at-risk for developmental delays. In order to identify concerns, there is a need to understand the mechanisms that facilitate becoming aware of it. AIM: A scoping review was conducted to understand this process of "noticing", through existing literature on parent experiences. METHODS: Records from major academic databases and grey literature sources were searched using key terms. Thematic analysis was then conducted to synthesise findings. RESULTS: Twenty papers meeting inclusion were identified. Noticing a delay was found

Maximizing the potential of early childhood education to prevent externalizing behavior problems: A meta-analysis.

Early childhood education (ECE) programs offer a promising mechanism for preventing early externalizing behavior problems and later antisocial behavior; yet, questions remain about how to best maximize ECE's potential. Using a meta-analytic database of 31 studies, we examined the overall effect of ECE on externalizing behavior problems and the differential effects of 3 levels of practice, each with increasing specificity and intensity aimed at children's social and emotional development. In short, we found that each successive level of programs did a better job than the prior level at reducing

["Early" diagnosis and "early" intervention in children with mental retardation--when is early enough to diagnose them?].

Patients with mental retardation (MR) cannot always be diagnosed accurately by physicians who are specialized in child neurology and/or developmental disorders at their first visit to the clinic. Precise examination such as psychological tests and chromosomal analysis are often necessary to diagnose them. Some patients with autistic disorders without MR often are misdiagnosed as having MR. Patients with mild to moderate MR are sometimes diagnosed late in their late teens or twenties. Timely diagnosis and timely/continuous intervention is more important than early diagnosis and early interventi

A home-based, post-discharge early intervention program promotes motor development and physical growth in the early preterm infants: a prospective, randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: The implementation of early intervention (EI) in medical settings is time-consuming and resource-intensive, which limits its extensive use. In 2018, the Chinese Eugenics Association developed a home-based, post-discharge EI program. This study aims at evaluating the impact of this EI program on neurodevelopment and physical growth of early preterm infants. METHODS: This study was a prospective, partially blinded, randomized controlled trial (RCT), followed by an open phase. A total of 73 infants born at 28+ 0 ~ 31+ 6 weeks' gestation who were admitted to the Children's Hospital of

An ecosystemic perspective of the factors affecting the learning experiences of learners with dyslexia in mainstream schools in England.

A systematic literature review (SLR) of seven papers written between 2015 and 2021 explored the educational experiences of learners with dyslexia in mainstream schools in England from an ecosystemic perspective and how to improve the situation. The analysis employed keywords for database searches and followed the PRISMA flow protocol. It synthesised evidence using thematic analysis and identified seven themes: dyslexia challenges; differential treatment; negative stereotypes; early intervention; teachers' training; power dynamics; and collaboration. The results suggest that several factors can

Family-Centered Early Intervention Deaf/Hard of Hearing (FCEI-DHH): Call to Action.

This Call to Action is the eighth and final article in this special issue on Family-Centered Early Intervention (FCEI) for children who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH) and their families, or FCEI-DHH. Collectively, these articles highlight evidence-informed actions to enhance family well-being and to optimize developmental outcomes among children who are DHH. This Call to Action outlines actionable steps to advance FCEI-DHH supports provided to children who are DHH and their families. It also urges specific actions to strengthen FCEI-DHH programs/services and systems across the globe, whethe

Improving Reading Skills Using a Computerized Phonological Training Program in Early Readers with Reading Difficulties.

In the last years, there has been a big effort to identify risk factors for reading difficulties and to develop new methodologies to help struggling readers. It has been shown that early intervention is more successful than late intervention, and that intensive training programs can benefit children with reading difficulties. The aim of our study is to investigate the effectiveness of an intensive computerized phonological training program designed to improve reading performance in a sample of children with reading difficulties at the early stages of their reading learning process. Thirty-two

Alzheimer's disease prevention: from risk factors to early intervention.

Due to the progressive aging of the population, Alzheimer's disease (AD) is becoming a healthcare burden of epidemic proportions for which there is currently no cure. Disappointing results from clinical trials performed in mild-moderate AD dementia combined with clear epidemiological evidence on AD risk factors are contributing to the development of primary prevention initiatives. In addition, the characterization of the long asymptomatic stage of AD is allowing the development of intervention studies and secondary prevention programmes on asymptomatic at-risk individuals, before substantial i

Planting the Seeds of Collaboration: A Pilot for School/Clinic Partnerships During Pediatric Clerkship.

Although pediatricians and family physicians often refer children to early intervention (EI) and provide support and information to families, medical school training that provides information about special education policy and procedures is often limited. We piloted a program whereby medical students, during their pediatric clerkship, observed school classrooms that included young children with disabilities. Visit impact was measured through assessments of perceived competency and a written reflection. Students showed perceived competency growth across all areas measured. Written reflections d

[Early attention and specific intervention programs with autism spectrum disorders].

INTRODUCTION: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental disorder that is characterised by qualitative deficiencies in social interaction and in communication, behaviour that is characterised by repetitive stereotyped patterns, and a restricted repertoire of interests and activities. DEVELOPMENT AND CONCLUSIONS: Early detection and diagnosis of this disorder by means of neuropaediatric techniques and procedures plays a decisive role in being able to set up an interdisciplinary therapeutic approach, in which specific early intervention programmes are noted for their effectiveness. The a

The Views of Autistic Adults on Early Autism Interventions: A Mixed-Methods Systematic Literature Review.

For many years, early autism interventions were developed without the involvement of autistic people. This review explores the views and experiences of autistic adults regarding psychosocial/educational interventions for young autistic children. Four databases (Web of Science Core Collection, Education Resource Information Centre, Education Database and PsycINFO) were searched; 19 studies were identified. Quality appraisal was performed using the Quality Assessment with Diverse Studies tool. Qualitative data were analysed using thematic synthesis. Quantitative data were analysed using descript

Delving Into the Details: Implementing Multitiered K-3 Reading Supports in High-Priority Schools.

Although there is widespread agreement about the practices associated with multitiered systems of support (MTSS) frameworks in beginning reading, we often underestimate the systems and infrastructure that schools need to implement and sustain these practices. The real work of developing these systems often happens in the detailed-oriented and often messy world of schedules, routines, meetings, and materials. The purpose of this article is to describe a K-3 reading initiative where school teams serving high percentages of students at risk for reading difficulties "delved into the details" to wo

An unlikely advocate: the role of the school nurse with children who have dyslexia.

School nurses are often the first line of advocacy for children when problems arise. One common learning disability, dyslexia, requires advocacy from the school nurse. However, due to lack of knowledge, misunderstandings, and misconceptions about the disorder, the school nurse may feel inadequate in an advocacy role. This article describes dyslexia, including warning signs, so that school nurses can be better prepared to assess for signs, provide intervention, and advocate for struggling children and families.

Deaf children's early sign language access: a guiding values brief.

We propose five guiding values for early sign language access as guidelines for change in the design and practice of early intervention and education of Deaf children. Applying these guiding values will facilitate language-rich environments and reduce the harms associated with language deprivation experienced by many Deaf children. These guiding values are distinct yet interconnected and are applicable for professionals and families alike.
