BACKGROUND: Ebstein anomaly is an uncommon, complex congenital malformation of the heart with prevalence of 0.3-0.5%. It occurs in 1% of congenital heart disease cases. It is characterized by dysplastic abnormalities of tricuspid valve which involves both basal and free attachments of the tricuspid valve leaflets, with downward displacement and elongation of the septal and anterior cusp which resulting in tricuspid regurgitation, the proximal part of the right ventricle is "atrialised", becoming thin walled and poorly contractile, along with an enlarged right atrium. With this anomaly, fertili…

Ebstein anomaly accounts for 1% of all congenital heart disease. It is a right ventricular myopathy with failure of tricuspid valve delamination and highly variable tricuspid valve morphology that usually results in severe regurgitation. It is the only congenital heart lesion that has a range of clinical presentations, from the severely symptomatic neonate to an asymptomatic adult. Neonatal operation has high operative mortality, whereas operation performed beyond infancy and into adulthood has low operative mortality. Late survival and quality of life for hospital survivors are excellent for …

BACKGROUND: Fetal echocardiography is possible to confirm with great certainty the diagnosis, in utero, Ebstein's anomaly, as well as determine its perinatal prognosis.
OBJECTIVE: Review the experience of 16 cases diagnosed with Ebstein's anomaly, using fetal echocardiography, analyzing "forecast echocardiographic parameters" set by Pavlova, Huhta and Barre.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: retrospective and descriptive analysis. We analysed echocardiographic parameters and its correlation with the perinatal development of 16 cases diagnosed with Ebstein's anomaly.
RESULTS: Maternal age of our patients

An 8-yr-old male meerkat (Suricata suricatta) presented with sudden lethargy. A globular-shaped heart associated with pleural effusion on chest thoracic radiographs was consistent with congestive heart failure, and echocardiography was performed under general anesthesia. It revealed an Ebstein anomaly, with mild pericardial effusion and marked right heart enlargement. The animal was treated with imidapril chlorydrate. After 4 mo of treatment, thoracic radiographs still showed right-sided cardiomegaly; however, the animal appeared clinically normal.

A 56-year-old female who had been diagnosed with Ebstein's anomaly was admitted with cyanosis and congestive heart failure. The echocardiogram showed severe tricuspid valve incompetence, displacement of the tricuspid valve and dilatation of the atrialized portion of the right ventricle. Atrial fibrillation was detected in the electrocardiogram. She underwent tricuspid valve replacement and right atrial maze procedure. She is released from congestive heart failure and remains in sinus rhythm 48 months after the operation.

Eighteen patients (11 women and 7 men) with Ebstein's anomaly recognized in adult age (18-55 years, mean 31.5) were followed in our Department for 3-13 years (mean 7 years). Echocardiographic and cardiac catheterization studies were performed in the majority. Clinical and echocardiographic findings were evaluated in the follow-up period. During the first assessment mild cyanosis was present in 14 cases. Nine patients were in NYHA class I, 6 in NYHA class II, 2 in NYHA class III and 1 in NYHA class IV. Eleven patients complained of palpitations. A Wolff-Parkinson-White (WPW) syndrome was presen

The incidence of Ebstein's anomaly among patients with congenital heart disease is about 0.5 and 1% among autopsy cases. Among 279 autopsy cases with congenital heart disease of the period from 1978 to 1982 we found 3 Ebstein's anomalies. The reported case is a rare combination of Ebstein's anomaly with ventricular L-loop, corrected transposition of the great arteries, atresia of aortic valve, hypoplasia of the aorta and of the aortic arch, coarctation of the aorta and septum secundum defect. Such a case has not been communicated in the literature. The case is described and the embryological d

A family is described in which both a father and son are affected with Ebstein's anomaly, while several other family members manifest different cardiac malformations. Five additional instances of familial Ebstein's anomaly were found in the literature and compared with our family. Inspection of possible modes of inheritance in this group of families suggests that Ebstein's anomaly is probably inherited as a polygenic character with a threshold phenomenon.
