The case report of patient with asymptomatic liver echinococcosis several year observing was shown. The liver cyst occasionally revealed by ultrasound examination had doubled its diameter in two years, serological test result had suggested Echinococcus granulosus infection. After the initially treatment with benzimidazole the curative surgery had been conducted and histological examination confirmed the liver echinococcosis diagnosis. The headaches in two years after surgery needed the central nervous system echinococcosis considering in differential diagnostics. Because of the normal liver pa…

Echinococcosis, caused by Echinococcus multilocularis (Em) and Echinococcus granulosus (Eg), induces distinct patterns of liver fibrosis. Understanding how protoscoleces (PSCs) from these species interact with hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) is crucial to elucidating the mechanisms of fibrogenesis. In this study, HSC-LX2 cells were co-cultured with Em and Eg PSCs. ELISA was used to quantify collagen-I, α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA), osteopontin (OPN), and TNF-α levels, while transmission electron microscopy (TEM) examined ultrastructural changes. Both E. multilocularis- and E. granulosus-derived…

Cystic echinococcosis (CE) caused by Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato (s.l.) is a significant zoonosis, especially in developing countries of the Middle East, with many studies focusing on CE genotypes in Iran. We performed a systematic review to determine the exact status of E. granulosus genotypes in the country. We explored English (Pubmed, Scopus, ISI Web of Science and Science Direct) and Persian (Magiran, Iran Medex and Scientific Information Database) databases along with Google Scholar. Our review included 73 studies published prior to the end of 2015. In total, 2952 animal (intermed…

Serum samples from twenty dogs infected with Echinococcus granulosus were tested for the presence of homocytotropic skin-sensitizing antibodies. Five of the twenty sera were positive in this test, while none of the sera from twenty normal dogs was positive. The antibody was thermolabile and susceptible to 2-mercaptoethanol reduction. Reaginic antibodies to cestode antigens have not been described previously in dogs, though they are frequently associated with helminth infection in other animals and may play a role in acquired resistance.

Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a zoonosis that can be caused by the larvae of Echinococcus granulosus; this disease occurs worldwide and is highly endemic in China. E. granulosus can produce energy by glycolysis as well as both aerobic and anaerobic respirations. Triosephosphate isomerase is a glycolytic enzyme present in a wide range of organisms and plays an important role in glycolysis. However, there has been little research on triosephosphate isomerase from E. granulosus (Eg-TIM). Here, we present a bioinformatic characterization and the experimentally determined tissue distribution charac…

Two fatty acid binding proteins, EgFABP1 and EgFABP2, were isolated from the parasitic platyhelminth Echinococcus granulosus. These proteins bind fatty acids and have particular relevance in flatworms since de novo fatty acids synthesis is absent. Therefore platyhelminthes depend on the capture and intracellular distribution of host's lipids and fatty acid binding proteins could participate in lipid distribution. To elucidate EgFABP's roles, we investigated their intracellular distribution in the larval stage by a proteomic approach. Our results demonstrated the presence of EgFABP1 isoforms in…

Hydatid disease is an important human zoonosis. Humans become infected from carnivores that are infected with the Echinococcus granulosus tapeworm. Carnivores become infected after consuming hydatid cysts from grazing animals, which are generally sheep, goats and cattle. A vaccine, known as EG95, can protect sheep and goats against cystic echinococcosis. This paper describes the adaptation of the EG95 vaccine for use in cattle. The monitoring of results used serology and also infection with E. granulosus eggs, followed by necropsy. Immunisation with living E. granulosus oncospheres showed that…

Cystic echinococcosis is a zoonotic infection caused by the dog tapeworm, Echinococcus granulosus. In the present study, adults of E. granulosus (n=20) were collected from 71 dogs from Western Iran and were genetically characterized using DNA sequencing of the partial mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (cox1) and NADH dehydrogenase 1 (nad1). Consensus sequences were obtained for cox1 (366) and nad1 (471) genes. Phylogenetic analysis of concatenated nad1 and cox1 nucleotide sequence data was performed using Bayesian Inference approach. Overall, the dog isolates indicated nine differen…

BACKGROUND: Echinococcosis is a parasitic disease, caused by the larval stage of the genus Echinococcus. Echinococcus multilocularis and Echinococcus granulosus cause alveolar echinococcosis (AE) and cystic echinococcosis (CE) in humans. Pathologists may be confronted with the larval stage of both species. Diagnosis may be difficult due to the low incidence in daily routine. However, right diagnosis of the pathologist is still the gold standard and crucial for further treatment of the patient.
SUMMARY: Macroscopically, specimens of AE show multiple small cysts and a bread-like appearance. Ins…

INTRODUCTION: Cystic echinococcosis is a globally distributed zoonotic disease of great medical and veterinary importance, which is caused by the cestode Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato. In Ukraine, two areas of the prominent circulation of the parasite are established, the southern steppe zone with sheep as the main transmitter, and the northern forest-steppe zone and Polissia, where pigs are mainly responsible for maintaining the E. granulosus transmission.
METHODS: Given that only a few studies have so far addressed the genetic diversity of the parasite in Ukraine, we have sequenced par…

Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a zoonotic disease caused by a complex of species known as Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato. CE is endemic in Argentina, Chile, Peru, Uruguay and the South part of Brazil. In contrast, little is known regarding the presence of CE in Bolivia. In this study, 35 cysts isolated from livestock (mostly from the Department of La Paz) and 3 from humans (La Paz, Oruro and Potosi) were genetically characterized analysing the sequence of the cox1 gene (1609 bp). In total, 30 cysts (from La Paz, Cochabamba and Beni) were characterized as E. granulosus sensu stricto (3 ferti…

OBJECTIVE: Echinococcus granulosus causes echinococcosis when its larvae settle in various organs, especially the liver and lung, of humans and herbivorous animals such as sheep and cattle. Echinococcosis are endemic in Mediterranean countries including Türkiye, the Middle East and South Africa. Echinococcosis treatments are generally surgical excision or benzimidazoles. Maggot debridement therapy is a wound treatment with Lucilia sericata larvae. While the larvae consume the old-damaged tissues and bacteria in the wound site, the maggots secrete an antimicrobial fluid. In this study, we aimed…

Osseous cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a rare disease caused by Echinococcus granulosus, which is characterized by high morbidity, disability, and mortality. However, it is severely neglected due to its mainly regional epidemic. The development of osseous CE is usually accompanied by severe bone erosion and destruction at the site of infection; however, there is a gap in research on the mechanism of this phenomenon. The current treatment for this disease is single-sided, ineffective, and has a high rate of disability and recurrence. Our study investigated the mechanism of bone destruction cause…

By screening an Echinococcus granulosus cDNA library with IgG4 from patients with active cystic echinococcosis (CE), we identified a cDNA encoding a protein of 19.0 kDa (Eg19). Eg19, in 12% SDS-PAGE in reducing and non-reducing conditions, showed several bands between 19 and 100 kDa. Immunoblotting (IB) analysis detected total IgG, IgG1 and IgG4 specific to the 38/40 kDa band of Eg19 in the 10% of patients' sera. The percentage of total IgG, IgG1 and IgG4-positive sera were significantly higher in sera from patients with active disease and cyst in multiple sites than from patients with inactiv…

Echinococcus granulosus is rare in The Netherlands and most human patients originate from southern Europe and Africa, where E. granulosus is still endemic in sheep, cattle, and pigs. Since the accession of some south-eastern European countries to the European Union, a large number of cattle have been imported from this area, according to national import data. The objective of this study was to determine the risk of re-introduction of E. granulosus in The Netherlands via the import of cattle from these endemic areas. The number of infected imported cattle was determined by correcting the number…

Spinal echinococcosis is a rare but serious condition. Within bone tissue hydatid cysts enlarge by daughter cyst formation. The value of drug treatment in bone echinococcosis is questionable. The aim of surgery is therefore removal of all the cysts. The best way to achieve this is at the first operation early in the progress of the disease. An anterior or circumferential approach is generally required to give the necessary accessibility. Owing to diffuse spread of the infection within the bone and the canal, recurrence is common. If neurological deterioration occurs, reintervention is necessar

BACKGROUND: Echinococcosis caused by Echinococcus is one of the most major infectious diseases in north-west highland of China. E. granulosus sensu strict, E. multilocularis, and E. canadensis are known to be the only three species related to human health transmitting in the areas. To achieve targeted treatment and control of echinococcosis, the accurate identification and discrimination of the species are important. However, currently the available diagnostic approaches do not present ideal results either in accuracy or efficiency.
METHODS: In the study, a set of primers were designed to aim
