Elbow joint fatigue and bench-press training.

CONTEXT: Bench-press exercises are among the most common form of training exercise for the upper extremity because they yield a notable improvement in both muscle strength and muscle endurance. The literature contains various investigations into the effects of different bench-press positions on the degree of muscle activation. However, the effects of fatigue on the muscular performance and kinetics of the elbow joint are not understood fully. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of fatigue on the kinetics and myodynamic performance of the elbow joint in bench-press training. DESIGN: Control…

Elbow joint biomechanics during ADL focusing on total elbow arthroplasty - a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Overloading is hypothesized to be one of the failure mechanisms following total elbow arthroplasty (TEA). It is unclear whether the current post-operative loading instruction is compliant with reported failure mechanisms. Aim is therefore to evaluate the elbow joint load during activities of daily living (ADL) and compare these loads with reported failure limits from retrieval and finite element studies. METHODS: A scoping review of studies until 23 November 2021 investigating elbow joint load during ADL were identified by searching PubMed/Medline and Web of Science. Studies were …

Risk Factors for Elbow Joint Contracture After Surgical Repair of Traumatic Elbow Fracture.

PURPOSE: The ability to predict contracture development after elbow fracture would benefit patients and physicians. This study aimed to identify factors associated with the development of posttraumatic elbow joint contracture. METHODS: A retrospective review of elbow fractures (AO/Orthopaedic Trauma Association [OTA] type 13 and 21) treated at one institution between 2011 and 2015 was performed. Data collected included demographics, injury information, treatment, and postoperative elbow range of motion (ROM). Multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to identify factors associa…

Radiographic changes at the elbow in primary osteoarthritis: a comparison with normal aging of the elbow joint.

A retrospective case-control study was undertaken to evaluate the pathologic radiographic changes that occur in primary osteoarthritis of the elbow. The radiographs of 50 patients with primary osteoarthritis of the elbow were compared with an age- and sex-matched control group to distinguish those features specific to elbow osteoarthritis from those occurring as a result of normal aging. We assessed 100 radiographs (50 anteroposterior and 50 lateral views) in both the study and control groups for 10 radiographic features. In the osteoarthritic group, osteophytes of the olecranon (96%), coronoi

Effect of Radiocapitellar Joint Over/Under Stuffing on Elbow Joint Contact Pressure.

PURPOSE: Comminuted radial head fractures are commonly treated by surgical resection or replacement with a prosthesis. A potential problem with radial head replacement is overlengthening of the radial neck ("overstuffing" of the radial head), which has been shown to affect both ulnohumeral kinematics and radiocapitellar pressures. We hypothesized that an overstuffed radial head prosthesis increases capitellar pressure and reduces coronoid pressure. METHODS: Seven human cadaveric elbows were prepared on a custom-designed apparatus simulating stabilizing muscle loads, and passively flexed from

[Ultrasound imaging of the elbow joint. Loose joint bodies and osteochondrosis dissecans].

In 6 patients with loose bodies due to osteochondritis dissecans, trauma or chondromatosis at the elbow, an additional ultrasonic examination was performed. In all cases loose bodies as well as the osteochondral lesion at the radial head and trochlea humeri were seen. Ultrasonic examination of the elbow is recommended in addition to the mandatory x-ray examination. However, sonography enables reduction of x-ray exposure because additional x-ray tomography can be avoided.

Neglected Iatrogenic Elbow Joint Dislocation. Didactic Case Report.

We present a case of a neglected dislocation of the elbow joint. A 28-year-old patient suffered elbow joint dislocation with fracture of the radial head after a fall from a considerable height. Following a failed attempt at manual repositioning, the dislocation was reduced surgically and free fragments of the radial head were removed without stabilisation with a Kirschner wire. The joint was immobilised for 6 weeks in an arm-to-hand plaster cast, followed by two weeks during which an elbow joint orthosis with adjustable flexion was worn. The patient then attended rehabilitation. The first foll…

Below-elbow joint arterial reconstruction for chronic ischaemia.

Ten below-elbow joint arterial bypass grafts performed in nine patients for chronic upper extremity ischaemia are reviewed. The cause of the ischaemia was thromboangiitis obliterans in four patients, iatrogenic trauma in four and unknown aetiology in one. Graft revision was required in two patients with thromboangiitis obliterans who underwent axillary-brachial bypass. Eight grafts, including one reoperation, have remained patent from 1 to 10 years (mean 54.3 months). Graft failure after 5 months did not occur, at which time the primary patency rate was 80%. In general, the long-term patency r…

[The search for joint loose bodies in the elbow joint--conventional or CT arthrography?].

Assessment of intraarticular loose bodies in the elbow joint with CT arthrography is more successful than with conventional arthrography. Calcification in the capsule is better delineated by CT. The diagnosis of osteochondrosis dissecans can mostly be established by plane ray and conventional tomography.

[Supraclavicular block during elbow joint surgeries in children].

The regional methods of analgesia are the "golden standard" of choice during trauma surgeries. The supraclavicular block of the bracheal plexus is the method of choice during the cubital joint surgeries. The purpose of the study is to improve the effectiveness of anesthesia and postoperative analgesia for surgical interventions on the cubital joint in children by developing and implementing the clinical practice of peripheral blockade of the brachial plexus by the supraclavicular access. The study included 40 children aged 5 to 12 years. The children rated as ASA I, came to the clinic on an em

Elbow joint: assessment with double-contrast CT arthrography.

The elbow joint was evaluated by means of computed tomography (CT) immediately following double-contrast arthrography. Normal baseline anatomy and representative abnormal studies are illustrated. Intraarticular abnormalities, such as osteocartilaginous bodies, hyperplastic synovium, fracture fragments, and osteophytes, were identified and precisely located on postarthrography CT scans. This technique, which enabled such abnormalities to be seen, has provided an anatomic and mechanical basis for seemingly idiopathic instances of limited elbow motion.

Problems With Medium-Sized Joints: Elbow Conditions.

For patients with elbow pain, a comprehensive history and physical examination can identify the mechanism of injury and specific tests can help determine the underlying pathology. When imaging is indicated, x-ray typically is the initial modality. Indications for ultrasonography include the need for static, dynamic, and stress visualization of elbow cartilage, tendons, ligaments, and osseous structures. Magnetic resonance imaging study is preferred for assessment of chronic elbow pain because of its ability to detect bone marrow edema, tendinopathy, nerve entrapment, and joint effusion. In chi

A physiological dynamic testing machine for the elbow joint.

BACKGROUND: The aim of our study was to develop a test setup combining realistic force transmission with physiological movement patterns at a frequency that mimicked daily use of the elbow, to assess implants in orthopedic joint reconstruction and trauma surgery. METHODS: In a multidisciplinary approach, an in vitro biomechanical testing machine was developed and manufactured that could simulate the repetitive forceful movement of the human elbow joint. The construction involved pneumatic actuators. An aluminum forearm module enabled movements in 3 degrees of freedom, while motions and forces…
