Electric-field-induced shifts in the infrared spectrum of conducting nerve axons.

Difference spectra between resting and excited nerve in the infrared region between 2000 and 1000 cm(-1) have been examined with a resolution of 0.5 cm(-1). Spectra were obtained with a modified Perkin-Elmer model 521 grating infrared spectrophotometer (Perkin-Elmer Corp., Instrument Div., Norwalk, Conn.), and the signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio was improved by time averaging and digital smoothing. Peaks occurring in the regions around 1030 and 1066 cm(-1) are identified as P-O-C stretch, at 1410-1414 cm(-1) as C-H deformation, and at 1750 cm(-1) as carbonyl stretch. The difference peaks appear to

Mixed-Valence Dimeric Olympicenyl Radical Cation With Improved Electrical Conductivity.

p-Type doping is an effective strategy for modulating molecular packing arrangement of organic compounds, thus improving their electrical conductivity. In this work, the first example of a mixed-valence radical cation dimer based on an odd alternant hydrocarbon, [OR5]2 +•[FeCl4]- (OR5-MV), was successfully prepared by the oxidation of olympicenyl radical (OR) derivative OR5 using FeCl3. X-ray crystallographic analysis revealed that cation-radical dimer [OR5]2 +•, acting as a fundamental building block, forms [OR5]4 2+ tetramer via a multi-center-two-electron bond, which further aggregates into

Differences in conduction velocities of nerve fibers excited by infrared and electrical stimulation.

BACKGROUND: Infrared neural stimulation (INS) uses short optical pulses to activate nerves. While electrical stimulation (ES) activates large-diameter fibers first, light may preferentially activate small-diameter fibers first, which could be valuable for many clinical applications. NEW METHOD: This study used a compact diode laser of 1470 nm to perform INS. Conduction velocity (CV) measurements were performed to assess differences in fiber type activation between INS and ES in the rat sciatic nerve and the goat vagus nerve. The rat sciatic nerve was chosen as a standard model because of its

Augmentation of Atrial Conduction Velocity With Pharmacological and Direct Electrical Sympathetic Stimulation.

BACKGROUND: Atrial conduction velocity (CV) is influenced by autonomic tone and contributes to the pathophysiology of re-entrant arrhythmias and atrial fibrillation. Cardiac sympathetic nerve activation has been reported via electrical stimulation within the vertebral vein (VV). OBJECTIVES: This study sought to characterize changes in right atrial (RA) CV associated with sympathetic stimulation from pharmacologic (isoproterenol) or direct electrical (VV stimulation) approaches. METHODS: Subjects undergoing catheter ablation for atrial fibrillation had baseline RA electroanatomic maps perform

Human Health Risks of Conducted Electrical Weapon Exposure: A Systematic Review.

IMPORTANCE: Conducted electrical weapons (CEWs) are used broadly as a less-lethal force option for police officers. However, there is no clear picture of the possible health risks in humans on the basis of rigorously assessed scientific evidence from the international peer-reviewed literature. OBJECTIVE: To synthesize and systematically evaluate the strength of published evidence for an association between exposure to different models of CEWs and adverse acute as well as chronic conditions. EVIDENCE REVIEW: Following a preregistered review protocol, the literature search strategy was based o

Direct Observation of Electrically Conductive Pili Emanating from Geobacter sulfurreducens.

Geobacter sulfurreducens is a model microbe for elucidating the mechanisms for extracellular electron transfer in several biogeochemical cycles, bioelectrochemical applications, and microbial metal corrosion. Multiple lines of evidence previously suggested that electrically conductive pili (e-pili) are an essential conduit for long-range extracellular electron transport in G. sulfurreducens. However, it has recently been reported that G. sulfurreducens does not express e-pili and that filaments comprised of multi-heme c-type cytochromes are responsible for long-range electron transport. This p

Gastric ablation as a novel technique for modulating electrical conduction in the in vivo stomach.

Gastric motility is coordinated by underlying bioelectrical "slow wave" activity. Slow wave dysrhythmias are associated with motility disorders, including gastroparesis, offering an underexplored potential therapeutic target. Although ablation is widely used to treat cardiac arrhythmias, this approach has not yet been trialed for gastric electrical abnormalities. We hypothesized that ablation can create localized conduction blocks and modulate slow wave activation. Radiofrequency ablation was performed on the porcine serosa in vivo, encompassing a range of parameters (55-85°C, adjacent points

Development of electrically conductive porous silk fibroin/carbon nanofiber scaffolds.

Tissue engineering applications typically require three-dimensional scaffolds which provide the requisite surface area for cellular functions, while allowing transport of nutrients, waste and oxygen to and from the surrounding tissues. Scaffolds need to ensure sufficient mechanical properties to provide mechanically stable frameworks under physiologically relevant stress levels. Meanwhile, electrically conductive platforms are also desirable for the regeneration of specific tissues, where electrical impulses are transmitted throughout the tissue for proper physiological functioning. Towards th

Biocompatible carbon nanotube-chitosan scaffold matching the electrical conductivity of the heart.

The major limitation of current engineered myocardial patches for the repair of heart defects is that insulating polymeric scaffold walls hinder the transfer of electrical signals between cardiomyocytes. This loss in signal transduction results in arrhythmias when the scaffolds are implanted. We report that small, subtoxic concentrations of single-walled carbon nanotubes, on the order of tens of parts per million, incorporated in a gelatin-chitosan hydrogel act as electrical nanobridges between cardiomyocytes, resulting in enhanced electrical coupling, synchronous beating, and cardiomyocyte fu

Electrically conductive bacterial nanowires in bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw biofilms.

OBJECTIVE: Bacterial biofilms play a role in the pathogenesis of bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ). The purpose of this preliminary study was to test the hypothesis that the extracellular filaments observed in biofilms associated with BRONJ contain electrically conductive nanowires. STUDY DESIGN: Bone samples of patients affected by BRONJ were evaluated for conductive nanowires by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and conductive probe atomic force microscopy (CP-AFM). We created nanofabricated electrodes to measure electrical transport along putative nanowires. RESULTS

Reversible cardiac conduction block and defibrillation with high-frequency electric field.

Electrical impulse propagation is an essential function in cardiac, skeletal muscle, and nervous tissue. Abnormalities in cardiac impulse propagation underlie lethal reentrant arrhythmias, including ventricular fibrillation. Temporary propagation block throughout the ventricular myocardium could possibly terminate these arrhythmias. Electrical stimulation has been applied to nervous tissue to cause reversible conduction block, but has not been explored sufficiently in cardiac tissue. We show that reversible propagation block can be achieved in cardiac tissue by holding myocardial cells in a re

Bladder neck electrical conductivity in female urinary urgency and urge incontinence.

Thirty-nine consecutive women, referred because of lower urinary tract symptoms of stress incontinence, urgency and urge incontinence, were interviewed and their symptoms were graded using a standardized questionnaire. They were investigated with conventional, fast-fill cystometry and with a new bladder neck electrical conductivity (BNEC) test which measures bladder neck activity. A highly significant correlation between the symptoms of urgency and urge incontinence and the maximum amplitude of bladder neck activity was found with the new test. The correlation of the maximum deflection at rest

Self-organization of conducting pathways explains electrical wave propagation in cardiac tissues with high fraction of non-conducting cells.

Cardiac fibrosis occurs in many forms of heart disease and is considered to be one of the main arrhythmogenic factors. Regions with a high density of fibroblasts are likely to cause blocks of wave propagation that give rise to dangerous cardiac arrhythmias. Therefore, studies of the wave propagation through these regions are very important, yet the precise mechanisms leading to arrhythmia formation in fibrotic cardiac tissue remain poorly understood. Particularly, it is not clear how wave propagation is organized at the cellular level, as experiments show that the regions with a high percentag

The masked threshold to noise ratio in brainstem electric response audiometry: assessment of the conductive loss component by bone-conducted masking.

The aim of this study was to assess the conductive loss component (CLC) by brainstem electric response audiometry. A bone-conducted noise was used to mask out the response to a conventional air-conducted click stimulus. The difference between the levels of the click and the noise is defined as the masked threshold to noise ratio (MTNR). This MTNR was determined for 21 normal ears (MTNR = -13 +/- 5 dB). The increase in MTNR compared to this normative value is a measure of the CLC. For 10 ears with an artificially induced purely conductive loss, the increase in MTNR is in good agreement with the

Electrically tunable anomalous Hall conductivity in ferrovalley-ferroelectric heterostructure VSe2/Sc2CO2.

Electrical control of anomalous Hall conductivity (AHC) and valley polarisation are necessary to realize energy-efficient devices for information storage that exploit the valley degrees of freedom in a material. Robustness in electrical control is easily realizable in ferroelectric materials having bistable electric polarisations, while manipulation of valley properties is possible in ferrovalley materials. Combining two such materials would make a valleytronics device that is electrically controllable. In this work, we investigate the possibility of the electric field-induced switching of the

Silver Conductive Adhesives with Long Pot Life and Stable Electrical-Thermal Performance.

This study systematically investigates the formulation-property relationships of epoxy-based silver conductive adhesives by varying silver filler architecture, total filler loading, and organic carrier design. Rotational viscometry, four-point probe measurements, thermal conductivity analysis, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were employed to elucidate the correlations among rheological behavior, conductive network formation, and electrical-thermal transport properties. All formulations incorporate dicyandiamide (DICY) as a latent curing agent, in combination with a thermally activated a

Rapid assessment of fern spore quality using microscale electrical conductivity testing.

PREMISE: Ex situ spore banks are essential for fern conservation and research, yet traditional germination tests for assessing spore quality are time consuming and labor intensive. We explored whether electrical conductivity (EC), a rapid proxy for seed vigor, could offer an efficient alternative for evaluating fern spore quality. METHODS: Using chlorophyllous spores of Plenasium banksiifolium, we developed a microscale EC protocol (0.01-g spores, 1-h immersion) to track EC and germination over eight weeks of storage. Spore longevity (p 50) was estimated via probit analysis, and correlations

Biphasic Electrical Stimulation of Schwann Cells on Conducting Polymer-Coated Carbon Microfibers.

Electroactive biomaterials are a key emerging technology for the treatment of neural damage. Conducting polymer-coated carbon microfibers are particularly useful for this application because they provide directional support for cell growth and tissue repair and simultaneously allow for ultrasensitive recording and stimulation of neural activity. Here, we report in vitro experiments investigating the biology of Schwann cells (SCs), a major player in peripheral nerve regeneration, on electroconducting microfibers. The optimal molecular composition of the cell substrate and cell culture medium wa
