Finding food in the dark: how trajectories of a gymnotiform fish change with spatial learning.

We analyzed the trajectories of freely foraging Gymnotus sp., a pulse-type gymnotiform weakly electric fish, swimming in a dark arena. For each fish, we compared the its initial behavior as it learned the relative location of landmarks and food with its behavior after learning was complete, i.e. after time/distance to locate food had reached a minimal asymptotic level. During initial exploration when the fish did not know the arena layout, trajectories included many sharp angle head turns that occurred at nearly completely random intervals. After spatial learning was complete, head turns becam…

Dexamethasone suppresses the sox3 gene during tail regeneration in the electric black ghost knifefish, Apteronotus albifrons (Linnaeus 1766).

This study investigated the effects of different doses of dexamethasone on the regeneration of muscle fibers, electric organ cells, and electroreceptors in the amputated tails of the black ghost knifefish, Apteronotus albifrons (Linnaeus 1766). The relative gene expression of sox3 was analyzed to assess neural regeneration. Four groups of fish were exposed to dexamethasone concentrations of 0 (control), 1, 2, and 3 mg/L, with water replaced every 48 h to maintain drug stability. The results revealed that dexamethasone significantly downregulated sox3 expression. A significant decrease (p < 0.0

Long-term omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid supplementation reduces the recurrence of persistent atrial fibrillation after electrical cardioversion.

BACKGROUND: Persistent atrial fibrillation (AF) is associated with a high risk of recurrence after electrical cardioversion. OBJECTIVE: We examined if long-term supplementation with omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids in fish oils commenced >1 month prior to electrical cardioversion and continued thereafter reduces recurrence of persistent AF. METHODS: This was an open-label, randomized study of 178 patients with persistent AF >1-month duration. Participants were assigned to control group (n = 87) or omega-3 group (6 g/d fish oil; n = 91) and underwent cardioversion 1 month later. Concurrent

Total and methylmercury residues in cartilaginous fish from Mediterranean Sea.

Concentrations of mercury and methylmercury residues were determined in the muscle tissue of three cartilaginous fishes Chimaera monstrosa (ghostshark), Torpedo nobiliana (electric ray) and Myliobatis aquila (eagle ray) from the Mediterranean Sea. The highest mean levels of total mercury were detected in ghostshark (3.14 mg/kg wet weight), followed by electric ray (2.42 mg/kg wet weight), and eagle ray (0.83 mg/kg wet weight). Such a variability is influenced by quite a number of factors, among which size, fish ecology and feeding habits. The percentages of the methylated form to total mercury

[Nature of the impulse activity in the anterior portions of the fish olfactory bulb].

The impulse activity of anterior portions of the fish olfactory bulb depends on coming of signals from the receptors as shown by the fact that action of novokain on the receptors entirely suppressed the activity. A direct application of CoCl2 solution (1--1.5 mM) had no effect on either spontaneous or evoked by adequate stimulation impulse activity in these areas which indicates its presynaptic, i.e. the receptor nature. The surface structures of the bulb anterior portions did not respond to electric stimulation of the olfactory tract while the electric stimulation of these structures evoked a

Plasticity in an electrosensory system. I. General features of a dynamic sensory filter.

1. In this study we describe changes in neuronal responses within the primary electrosensory processing nucleus of a weakly electric fish that occur when the fish are exposed to repetitive patterns of electrosensory stimuli. Extracellular single-unit recordings show that pyramidal cells within the electrosensory lateral line lobe develop, over a time course of several minutes, an insensitivity to repetitive stimuli applied to a cell's receptive field (local stimulus). The pyramidal cell response cancellation only develops if the local stimulus is applied simultaneously with a diffuse pattern o…

Sexual and seasonal plasticity in the emission of social electric signals. Behavioral approach and neural bases.

Behavior in electric fish includes modulations of a stereotyped electric organ discharge (EOD) in addition to locomotor displays. Gymnotiformes can modulate the EOD rate to produce signals that participate in different behaviors. We studied the reproductive behavior of Brachyhypopomus pinnicaudatus both in the wild and laboratory settings. During the breeding season, fish produce sexually dimorphic social electric signals (SES): males emit three types of chirps (distinguished by their duration and internal structure), and accelerations, whereas females interrupt their EOD. Since these SES impl…

Predictive uncertainty in state-estimation drives active sensing.

Animals use active sensing movements to shape the spatiotemporal characteristics of sensory signals to better perceive their environment under varying conditions. However, the underlying mechanisms governing the generation of active sensing movements are not known. To address this, we investigated the role of active sensing movements in the refuge tracking behavior ofEigenmannia virescens, a species of weakly electric fish. These fish track the longitudinal movements of a refuge in which they hide by swimming back and forth in a single linear dimension. During refuge tracking,Eigenmanniaexhibi…

Development of a Novel One-Step Automated Rapid in situ Hybridization for Anaplastic Lymphoma Kinase Rearrangement Using Non-Contact Alternating-Current Electric-Field Mixing.

Echinoderm microtubule-associated protein-like 4 and anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) fusion gene rearrangement is a key driver mutation in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Although Break-Apart ALK fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) is a reliable diagnostic method for detecting ALK gene rearrangement, it is also costly and time-consuming to use as a routine screening test. Our aim was to evaluate the clinical utility of a novel one-step, automated, rapid FISH (Auto-RaFISH) method developed to facilitate hybridization. This method takes advantage of the non-contact mixing effect of an

Spatial coding of conspecifics in the electrosensory system: Early segregation of information streams.

Localizing the source of a signal requires sophisticated neural mechanisms, and we are still uncovering the coding principles that support accurate spatial processing. Weakly electric fish can detect and localize distant conspecifics, but the way this spatial information is encoded is unclear. Here, we investigate the spatial representation of conspecific signals in the hindbrain to determine how the properties of the heterogeneous population of pyramidal cells affect the spatial coding accuracy of conspecific signals. We hypothesize that specific subsets of cells provide more accurate spatial…

Knotted electric wire in urinary bladder: Can such complex foreign body be retrieved endoscopically!

Various types of foreign bodies have been recovered from the urinary bladder and urethra including telephone cables, pocket battery, little fish, pen tips and so on. Management of such cases include either endoscopic removal or open surgery. We report the case of an 18-year-old boy who inserted an electric wire in the urethra for eroticism and was managed by endoscopic removal following fragmentation of wire under local anaesthesia using holmium laser.

Optogenetic sensors in the zebrafish heart: a novel in vivo electrophysiological tool to study cardiac arrhythmogenesis.

Cardiac arrhythmias are among the most challenging human disorders to diagnose and treat due to their complex underlying pathophysiology. Suitable experimental animal models are needed to study the mechanisms causative for cardiac arrhythmogenesis. To enable in vivo analysis of cardiac cellular electrophysiology with a high spatial and temporal resolution, we generated and carefully validated two zebrafish models, one expressing an optogenetic voltage indicator (chimeric VSFP-butterfly CY) and the other a genetically encoded calcium indicator (GCaMP6f) in the heart. Methods: High-speed epifluo

Ultrastructure of odontogenic cells during enameloid matrix synthesis in tooth buds from an elasmobranch, Raja erinacae.

The ultrastructure of the inner dental epithelial cells (IDE) and odontoblasts in elasmobranch (Raja erinacae) tooth buds was investigated by transmission electron microscopy to determine what contribution each cell type makes to the forming enameloid matrix. Row II, early stage, IDE cells contained few organelles associated with protein synthesis, whereas preodontoblasts appeared competent to initiate extracellular matrix production. Row III IDE cells are also devoid of organelles related to secretory protein synthesis, although these IDE cells accumulated large pools of intracellular glycoge

Direct cerebellar control over motor production in a species with extreme cerebellar enlargement.

The cerebellum is thought to fine-tune movement without being required for its production. However, this textbook view derives mainly from studies of mammalian species with highly developed cerebral cortices. Here, we examined cerebellar function in the elephant-nose fish, a member of a family of African weakly electric fish (Mormyridae) in which the cerebellum is massively enlarged, covering the entire dorsal surface of the brain.1,2,3,4,5 Although the microcircuitry and anatomical connections of the mormyrid "gigantocerebellum" have been well characterized, its function(s) remains unknown.6,…

Pre-Slaughter Stunning of Farmed Atlantic Halibut in CO2-Saturated Seawater: Assessment of Unconsciousness by Electroencephalography (EEG).

As fish welfare becomes a growing concern, it is important to ensure humane treatment during slaughter. This study aimed to assess the onset of unconsciousness in Atlantic halibut immersed in CO2-saturated seawater through electroencephalography (EEG). Of the 29 fish studied, 10 exhibited escape attempts, indicating aversion to CO2-saturated water despite its oxygenation. EEG signals showed four distinct phases: transitional, excitation (high amplitude-high frequency), suppressed, and iso-electric phases. The onset of the suppressed phase, indicative of unconsciousness, occurred on average 258

Sources of polychlorinated biphenyls to Upper Hudson River fish post-dredging.

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are persistent, bioaccumulative, and toxic chemicals that are the dominant contaminant in the Upper Hudson River (UHR) in New York State where two General Electric (GE) plants historically discharged PCBs to the river. Portions of the UHR were dredged from 2009 to 2015 to address PCB contamination. In 2017, the first post-dredging survey of yearling feeder fish and sediment PCB contamination was conducted to establish a baseline for the recovery of the river. Prior analysis of the sediment data from the 2017 survey indicated that ∼2% of the PCBs in the surface

First documented case of ectoparasitism in electric eel: Dolops discoidalis (Branchiura: Argulidae) infesting Electrophorus voltai (Teleostei: Gymnotidae).

Electrophorus voltai, commonly known as poraquê, is a fish species widely distributed in the Amazon Basin. This study presents the first record of parasitism by Dolops discoidalis, an obligate hematophagous ectoparasite, in E. voltai from the Xingu River Basin. Six host specimens were examined (mean total length: 119.5 cm), harboring 41 parasite individuals (19 males and 21 females), with a prevalence of 100 % and a mean intensity of 6.83 ± 2.22. Parasites were attached to specific regions of the host's body. Our findings support the affinity of D. discoidalis for scaleless fish and contribute

Virtual social interaction reveals that the dorsal habenula-IPN pathway is essential for targeting the opponent.

Conspecific social interaction is among the most important brain functions to be investigated. We designed a virtual reality (VR) system that enables real-time teleportation of head-fixed adult zebrafish movements onto their 3D avatars. To facilitate dyadic fight-like behavior in the VR space, we devised a task in which avoidance of periodic mild electric stimulation is achieved by attacking the opponent, and a transient electric shock acts as negative feedback for bite-like events. Moreover, a transgenic fish with an impaired dorsolateral habenula-to-interpeduncular nucleus pathway, known as

Structure of the Native Muscle-type Nicotinic Receptor and Inhibition by Snake Venom Toxins.

The nicotinic acetylcholine receptor, a pentameric ligand-gated ion channel, converts the free energy of binding of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine into opening of its central pore. Here we present the first high-resolution structure of the receptor type found in muscle-endplate membrane and in the muscle-derived electric tissues of fish. The native receptor was purified from Torpedo electric tissue and functionally reconstituted in lipids optimal for cryo-electron microscopy. The receptor was stabilized in a closed state by the binding of α-bungarotoxin. The structure reveals the binding o

Electrosensing-based three-dimensional localization and obstacle avoidance for underwater robots with a mobile surface beacon in shallow-water environments.

Accurate localization and reliable obstacle avoidance remain challenging for underwater robots in shallow and unstructured environments, where optical sensing can be degraded by light attenuation and turbidity, while acoustic sensing may be affected by multipath propagation and environmental noise. Weakly electric fish exploit externally generated electric-field signals for passive electrosensing and electrocommunication, and actively emit and receive self-generated electric signals to perceive nearby objects in turbid and confined aquatic environments. Inspired by these capabilities, this stu…
