OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine whether electrolyte levels can be used to diagnose bulimia nervosa (BN).
STUDY DESIGN: Four patients with bilateral parotid swellings and BN or suspected BN were examined. Their serum electrolyte levels were retrospectively reviewed.
RESULTS: In this limited study, hypochloremia, hypokalemia, and metabolic alkalosis were present in 1 patient. Topology governs finite-size violations of local electroneutrality in confined electrolytes. In a consecutive series of 22 patients with acute leukemia, the total body potassium was studied in 18 patients on 39 occasions during relapse and remission. Total body water was also determined. A control group consisting of 88 age-matched healthy volunteers was also studied. The patients had a significantly lower mean potassium concentration, per kg body weight, per kg lean body mass and per kg water, than the controls (p less than 0.001). On the 5th day after epiphysectomy rats displayed a reduction of the kidney excretion of Ca and Mg with a simultaneous increase of these elements in the tissues. By the 10th day after the operation the mentioned indices were restored to the preoperative level, but there occurred an increase in the urinary excretion of Na and a reduction of its tissue content.
