BACKGROUND: Despite the long history of psychogenic nonepileptic seizures (PNES), relatively little is known about the mechanisms that cause and maintain this condition. Emerging research evidence suggests that patients with PNES might have difficulties in regulating their emotions. However, much remains to be learned about the nature of these difficulties and the emotional responses of individuals with PNES. This study aimed to gain a detailed understanding of emotion regulation processes in patients with PNES by examining differences between patients with PNES and a healthy control group wit

This reaction time study examined whether the left and right hemispheres are differentially specialized to process positive and negative affect respectively in adult females and males. Either happy or sad facial expressions of emotion were presented simultaneously with neutral facial expressions to the two visual fields. Happy faces were responded to more rapidly in the left visual field-right hemisphere with no visual field differences for sad faces. Females were superior to males when emotional facial stimuli were presented to the left visual field and were more accurate in recognizing sad f

BACKGROUND: Psychological resilience is known to reduce learning burnout, but it remains unclear whether low- versus high-arousal academic emotions mediate this relationship and whether such effects vary across grades.
OBJECTIVE: This study examined the mediating roles of academic emotions and tested grade differences.
METHOD: A cluster sample of 739 middle school students (grades 7-9) from urban and rural schools completed three validated scales assessing psychological resilience, learning burnout, and academic emotions (positive/negative × high/low arousal). Structural equation modeling wi

While music triggers many physiological and psychological reactions, the underlying neural basis of perceived and experienced emotions during music listening remains poorly understood. Therefore, using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), I conducted a comparative study of the different brain areas involved in perceiving and feeling emotions during music listening. I measured fMRI signals while participants assessed the emotional expression of music (perceived emotion) and their emotional responses to music (felt emotion). I found that cortical areas including the prefrontal, auditory

People differ in their tendency to experience negative emotions. This variability is largely captured by broad psychological constructs like neuroticism, whose facets include anxiety, depression, and stress vulnerability, among others. The amygdala and salience network have been assumed to underlie such dispositions, despite inconsistent evidence. We preregistered a comprehensive test of these and other competing hypotheses-accompanied by theory-agnostic machine learning prediction-using neural responses in the two most common emotional neuroimaging tasks (scenes and faces; N = 338/424). Evide

Skin temperature has been recognized as a potential marker of emotional arousal, with studies demonstrating temperature changes in response to various emotional stimuli. However, temperature in different body parts and in different basic emotions has not been studied sufficiently. Our study aimed to investigate whether basic emotions could be reflected in temperature changes at specific body surfaces. Forty healthy subjects viewed blocks of pictures inducing six basic emotions and neutral images while their temperature at the shoulder, throat, chest, and temple was recorded. In addition, elect

Adolescence and early adulthood are characterized by the development of cognitive and social skills necessary for autonomous functioning in adult roles. As classically described by Erik Erikson, this developmental process involves forging a meaningful sense of identity, comprising a worldview, set of moral values, and occupational aspirations. This may require individuals questioning or defying the expectations and norms they have learned within the social context of their upbringing; simultaneously they remain acutely sensitive to the judgment of their peers. This developmental period encompa

BACKGROUND: Neuroscience research has generally studied emotions each taken in isolation. However, mixed emotional states (e.g., the co-occurrence of amusement and disgust, or sadness and pleasure) are common in everyday life. Psychophysiological and behavioral evidence suggests that mixed emotions may have response profiles that are distinguishable from their constituent emotions. Yet, the brain bases of mixed emotions remain unresolved.
METHODS: We recruited 38 healthy adults who viewed short, validated film clips, eliciting either positive (amusing), negative (disgusting), neutral, or mixe

BACKGROUND: Diagnosis of a severe condition may have a strong emotional impact on patients. Specific emotions experienced when receiving the diagnosis of a bullous disease have not been investigated.
METHODS: Adult patients diagnosed with a bullous condition were recruited through the Italian Association of patients with pemphigus and pemphigoid (ANPPI). Information was collected online on sociodemographic and clinical data. We asked which emotions the patient experienced at the time of the diagnosis, i.e., isolation, anger, confusion, sadness, despair, disregard, fear, avoidance, and challen

The response to pain is highly individual and can be influenced by complex emotional perception. This study aims to investigate the status of the pain-related emotional response, and the influence on headache characteristics and disability in migraine. We studied the pain-related emotional response in 145 consecutive migraine patients using the Pain Anxiety Symptoms Scale (PASS), the Pain Catastrophizing Scale (PCS), and the Pain Sensitivity Questionnaire (PSQ) and compared them with 106 healthy controls. We investigated the relationship between emotional factors and migraine characteristics.

There is evidence that humans mirror others' emotional responses: brain responses to observed and experienced emotion overlap, and reaction time costs of observing others' pain suggest that others' emotional states interfere with our own. Such emotional mirroring requires regulation to prevent personal distress. However, currently it is unclear whether this "empathic interference effect" is uniquely social, arising only from the observation of human actors, or also from the observation of non-biological objects in "painful" states. Moreover, the degree to which this interference relates to ind

The main purpose of this study is to describe how negative emotions were investigated in the sphere of dermatological diseases, in order (1) to summarize literature trends about skin disorders and emotions, (2) to highlight any imbalances between the most studied and neglected emotions, (3) and to offer directions for future research. A computerized literature search provided 41 relevant and potentially eligible studies. Results showed that the study of emotions in skin disease is limited to Sadness/depression and Fear/anxiety. The emotions of Anger and Disgust have been poorly explored in emp

BACKGROUND: Endothelial dysfunction predicts adult cardiovascular disorder and may be associated with negative emotions in adolescents. This study was conducted to determine if hopelessness, hostility, and depressive, anxiety, or conduct disorders were associated with compromised endothelial function and whether those associations were mediated by health risk behaviors.
METHODS: Endothelial function, assessed through brachial artery reactive hyperemia, was measured in a psychopathology enriched sample of 60 15-18-year-old girls. The correlations between hopelessness, hostility, and depressive

This survey takes into account the unconscious aspects of emotions and the critical role played in them by the right hemisphere, considering different acceptations of the term 'unconscious'. In a preliminary step, the nature of emotions, their componential and hierarchical organization and the relationships between emotions and hemispheric specialization are shortly discussed, then different aspects of emotions are surveyed: first are reviewed studies dealing with the unconscious processing of emotional information, taking separately into account various lines of research. All these studies su

AIMS: The aims of this study were to investigate the basic emotions experienced within and between episodes of bipolar disorder and, more specifically, to test the predictions made by the Schematic, Propositional, Analogical and Associative Representation Systems (SPAARS) model that mania is predominantly characterized by the coupling of happiness with anger whereas depression (unipolar and bipolar) primarily comprises a coupling between sadness and disgust.
DESIGN: A cross-sectional design was employed to examine the differences within and between the bipolar, unipolar and control groups in

BACKGROUND: Contemporary neuroscience relates human behaviour, emotions and cognition to underlying neurobiological processes in the brain. Increased awareness of such processes may improve our understanding of emotional regulatory problems and development of psychopathology in some children and adolescents.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: This article is based on articles identified through a non-systematic search in PubMed and on publications from the authors' own database.
RESULTS: Several processes form the biological basis for how children and adolescents regulate their emotions when relating to

PURPOSE: To understand the emotional predicament in children with recently diagnosed idiopathic or cryptogenic epilepsy.
METHODS: We used the well-tried method of structured projection for the first time in children with epilepsy. Thirty-six children with epilepsy, aged 7-15 years (mean age, 9.5 years) and in 35 control children aged 7-15 years (mean age, 9.4 years), attributed shame and guilt in relation to three types of situation (non-illness related, illness related, and epilepsy related). Children were evaluated twice: shortly after diagnosis, before antiepileptic drug (AED) use and afte

Hostility-related variables have been categorized as to kinds of emotions, attitudes, and behaviors. Relatively few studies have explored whether genetic factors contribute to individual differences in these variables. Moreover, the majority of this research has involved male subjects. The present study utilized the twin method to evaluate the influence of genetic factors on hostility-related emotions, namely, trait anger and irritability, hostility-related attitudes, namely cynical hostility and suspiciousness, and hostility-related behaviors, namely, physical, verbal, and indirect aggression

Moral emotions-such as guilt, shame, compassion, and gratitude-play a central role in shaping psychological functioning and mental health. This mini review synthesizes recent empirical and theoretical research on the regulatory roles and mediating mechanisms of moral emotions in mental health outcomes. It is demonstrated that moral emotions activate both adaptive (e.g., cognitive reappraisal, self-compassion) and maladaptive (e.g., rumination, suppression) regulatory processes that significantly influence emotional resilience or vulnerability. Additionally, psychological flexibility, emotion r
