Epidemiology of Japanese encephalitis.

Seven hundred and sixty-two cases of Japanese Encephalitis (JE) were studied during the last 5 years (1985-1989) in relation to age, sex, religion, nutritional status, living habits, exposure to domestic animals and mosquitos, clinical profile, seasonal variation and mortality pattern. The maximum occurrence was in 1987-1988 and it showed a preponderance in males (51-82%). The disease is progressively decreasing in Muslims (3-7%) and gradually increasing in tribes (25-60%). Children in the age-group of 6-7 years (19-25%) were maximally affected and the disease was rare in infancy. The common f

JAPANESE ENCEPHALITIS IN THE USSR.

The author sketches the history of Japanese encephalitis in the USSR, where it has been thoroughly studied since it first occurred in 1938. After a brief outline of its epidemiology, he describes the pathogenesis, the signs and symptoms, and the pathophysiological mechanisms that make this form of encephalitis so dangerous. He also discusses the diagnosis and the methods of treatment and prevention practised in the USSR.

[Flavivirus Infection (Japanese Encephalitis)].

Japanese encephalitis remains a clinically relevant neuroinfectious disease in Japan. Adults in middle- to older- age groups are at higher risk due to the low prevalence of neutralizing antibodies. Clinicians should consider this disease when encountering acute encephalitis during the summer-to-autumn season. High fever, impaired consciousness, and extrapyramidal signs are characteristic clinical features and correspond to frequent involvement of the thalamus and substantia nigra. A definitive diagnosis is achieved through appropriate sampling of acute- and convalescent-phase specimens togethe

IC51 Japanese encephalitis vaccine.

Japanese encephalitis is the leading cause of viral encephalitis in Asia. Every year 30,000 - 50,000 cases and 10,000 deaths from Japanese encephalitis are reported, and underreporting has been suggested. No effective antiviral therapy exists to treat this mosquito-borne flavivirus infection. For active immunization vaccines are available. The manufacturing of the only vaccine that was internationally licensed, JE-VAX, was ceased in 2005. Therefore a shortage of Japanese encephalitis vaccines might occur before new generation vaccines based on cell culture technology will be available. A promi

Japanese encephalitis in India.

Japanese encephalitis (JE), caused by a mosquito-borne virus was first recognised in India in 1955 and since then many major out-breaks from different parts of the country have been reported, predominantly in rural areas. Children are mainly affected, with morbidity rate estimated at 0.30 to 1.5 per 100,000 population. Case fatality rate has ranged from 10% to 60%, and up to 50% of those who recover may be left with neurological deficits. Reported incidence has generally been higher in males than in females, but subclinical infections have occurred equally in both sexes. A large number of subc
