Silicone oil used for endotamponade of retinal detachment may migrate into the subarachnoid space of the brain, including the cerebral ventricles, presumably by extension through silicone oil-filled spaces in the optic nerve. Silicone oil has characteristic appearances on CT scans and MRI, which can be utilized to distinguish it from more ominous entities. We describe a case of intraventricular silicone in a patient who presented with seizures.

Kranenburg's syndrome is defined as central serous detachment associated with an optic disc pit. We report the interesting and very seldom combination of Kranenburg's syndrome and iris-retinochoroidal-coloboma. Reattachment was achieved after vitrectomy, peeling of epiretinal membranes, laser coagulation adjacent and temporal to the optic disc and gas endotamponade. Coincidence of this syndrome with an iris-retinochoroidal-coloboma is extremely rare. Both coloboma and optic disc pit are based on closure defects during week 6 of embryogenesis.

In the absence of compartmentalization, there is a risk of silicone oil migrating to the anterior chamber which can cause long-term complications. PURPOSE: To report on the use of Densiron (heavy silicone oil), a new endotamponade agent with proposed benefits in complex retinal detachments involving inferior proliferative vitreoretinopathy.
METHOD: Retrospective case note review.
RESULTS: Ten cases (10 eyes) in which Densiron was used in eyes which had failed initial retinal detachment surgery. The overall success rate of long-term total reattachment was 70%. We report a case of morning glory syndrome with retinal detachment. A slit-like retinal break at the edge of the excavated disc anomaly provided a direct communication between the subretinal space and the vitreous cavity.
