Detection of DNA based on fluorescence resonance energy transfer of polyelectrolyte-protected CdTe quantum dots as energy donors.

The approach for DNA detection was established by using a fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) system, in which the energy donor was poly-diallyldimethylammonium chloride-protected quantum dots and the energy receptor was ethidium bromide (EB) inserting into the double stranded DNA. The concentration of the probe DNA, EB and NaCl was optimized. Under the optimized conditions, the FRET system has a stable signal and good reproducibility. The linear range is 7.7-61.6 nM with the correlation coefficient of 0.998 and the limit of detection is 7.7 nM. This method is simple and sensitive, a…

Trace Amorphous FeOx Steers O2 Activation From Charge Transfer to Energy Transfer for Singlet-Oxygen-Mediated Biomass Valorization.

Controlling O2 activation in air is central to selective aerobic photooxidation. Yet directing O2 activation toward an energy-transfer (ET) pathway producing mild singlet oxygen (1O2), rather than a charge-transfer (CT) pathway generating radicals, remains difficult because the catalysts must favor triplet-energy transfer to O2 while avoiding electron transfer. We show that ultrasmall amorphous FeOx supported on porous carbon nitride (PCN) redirects O2 photoactivation from a mixed CT/ET process to a predominantly ET pathway. Compared with the crystalline counterpart, trace ultrasmall amorphous…

Altered Excitation-Energy Transfer in the Dark-Adapted Leptolyngbya boryana Variant dg211.

Dark-heterotrophic growth allows photosynthetic pigment-protein complexes to be examined when photosynthetic energy conversion is not required for growth. A dark-adapted variant, dg211, of Leptolyngbya boryana has been reported to exhibit altered carotenoid composition, but its effect on excitation-energy transfer remains unclear. Here, we analyzed light-grown wild-type (WT-light) and dg211 (dg211-light), and dark-grown dg211 (dg211-dark) cells using immunoblotting, pigment analysis, absorption spectroscopy, 77 K steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy, and fluorescence decay-…

Evidence for Protein Dynamics-Induced Energy Transfer Pathway Changes in Photosynthetic Complexes.

Photosystem I (PSI) is a chlorophyll-binding protein complex that plays a central role in photosynthesis. PSI isolated from cyanobacteria, Thermosynechococcus vestitus, contains a light-harvesting system that consists of approximately 100 chlorophyll a molecules. The effect of the protein fluctuation dynamics on the excitation energy migration within the pigment array is fundamentally important. In 2009, Brecht and co-workers proposed that protein dynamics can induce variations in the excitation energy transfer (EET) pathways within PSI ( Brecht et al. Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U. S. A.2009, 106,…

Visible Light-Induced Sulfonamidation of [1.1.1]Propellane Promoted by Energy Transfer Catalysis.

Sulfonamides represent an important structural motif present in numerous drugs, however, the scarcity of synthetic methods for bicyclo[1.1.1]pentanesulfonamides has limited the applicability of this compound class. Herein, we report an energy transfer (EnT) promoted photocatalytic strategy for the synthesis of bicyclo[1.1.1]pentanesulfonamides via sulfonamidation of [1.1.1]propellane. This approach utilizes N-nitrososulfonamides as precursors, facilitating the generation of sulfonamide radicals through homolytic cleavage under EnT promotion. These radicals were then found to engage in an addit…

Energy-Transfer-Enabled Truce-Smiles Rearrangement Using Sulfonamides as Sulfonyl Radical Precursors.

We have developed a method for visible-light-induced radical Smiles-Truce rearrangement reactions that use sulfonamide-derived imines as sulfonyl radical precursors. This method enables efficient functionalization of alkenes and has the advantages of having a wide substrate scope and not emitting sulfur dioxide, thereby constituting an environmentally friendly approach for the synthesis of structurally complex sulfones, alcohols, and amines.

Adsorbate dissociation due to heteromolecular electronic energy transfer from fluorobenzene thin films.

Study of the near-UV photodissociation dynamics for monolayer (ML) quantities of CH3I on thin films of a series of fluorobenzenes and benzene (1-25 ML) grown on a Cu(100) substrate finds that in addition to gas-phase-like neutral photodissociation, CH3I dissociation can be enhanced via electronic energy transfer to the CH3I following photoabsorption in several of the thin films studied. Distinct CH3 photofragment kinetic energy distributions are found for CH3I photodissociation on C6H5F, 1,4-C6H4F2 and C6H6 thin films, and distinguished from neutral photodissociation pathways using polarized i…

Radiation-Induced Transfer of Charge, Atoms, and Energy within Isolated Biomolecular Systems.

In biological tissues, ionizing radiation interacts with a variety of molecules and the consequences include cell killing and the modification of mechanical properties. Applications of biological radiation action are for instance radiotherapy, sterilization, or the tailoring of biomaterial properties. During the first femtoseconds to milliseconds after the initial radiation action, biomolecular systems typically respond by transfer of charge, atoms, or energy. In the condensed phase, it is usually very difficult to distinguish direct effects from indirect effects. A straightforward solution fo

Selective and Functional-Group-Tolerant Photoalkylation of Imines by Energy-Transfer Photocatalysis.

Basic amines show broad bioactivity and remain a promising source of new medicines. The direct photoalkylation of imines offers a promising … ted state, intersystem crossing, and radical recombination, with photocatalytic enhancement through energy transfer. We further show that N-H imines are more photoreactive than N-substituted imines, a distinction partially explained by sterics and side reactions. To fully explain this distinction, we introduce the thermodynamic parameter excited-state hydrogen-at …

Ultrafast energy transfer between π-stacked aromatic rings upon inner-valence ionization.

Non-covalently bound aromatic systems are ubiquitous and govern the physicochemical properties of various organic materials. They are import … by a carbon 2s vacancy state produced by electron-impact ionization and proceeds through ultrafast energy transfer between the benzene molecules. As a result, the dimer relaxes with the emission of a further low-energy electron (<10 eV) and a pair of C6H6+ cations undergoing Coulomb explosion. Coincident fragment-ion and electron momentum spectroscopy, accompani …

Interlaced proton grid therapy - Linear energy transfer and relative biological effectiveness distributions.

PURPOSE: Interlaced beams have previously been proposed for delivering proton grid therapy. This study aims to assess dose-averaged LET (LETd) and RBE-weighted dose (DRBE) distributions of such beam geometries, and compare them with conventional intensity modulated proton therapy (IMPT). METHODS: IMPT plans and four different interlaced proton grid therapy plans were generated for five patient cases (esophagus, lung, liver, prostate, anus). The constant RBE = 1.1 was assumed for optimization. The LETd was subsequently Monte Carlo calculated for each plan and used as input for two LET-dependen

Reoptimization of Intensity Modulated Proton Therapy Plans Based on Linear Energy Transfer.

PURPOSE: We describe a treatment plan optimization method for intensity modulated proton therapy (IMPT) that avoids high values of linear energy transfer (LET) in critical structures located within or near the target volume while limiting degradation of the best possible physical dose distribution. METHODS AND MATERIALS: To allow fast optimization based on dose and LET, a GPU-based Monte Carlo code was extended to provide dose-averaged LET in addition to dose for all pencil beams. After optimizing an initial IMPT plan based on physical dose, a prioritized optimization scheme is used to modify…

Distance-Dependent Triplet Energy Transfer between CdSe Nanocrystals and Surface Bound Anthracene.

We investigate triplet energy transfer (TET) across variable-length aromatic oligo-p-phenylene and aliphatic bridges in a covalently linked CdSe nanocrystal (NC)-bridge-anthracene hybrid system. Photon upconversion measurements in saturated 9,10-diphenylanthracene hexane solutions under air-free conditions at room temperature provided the steady-state rate of TET (ket) across this interface. For flexible transmitters, ket is similar for different lengths of aliphatic bridges, suggesting that the ligands bend backward. For the rigid phenylene spacer, triplet sensitization of anthracene transmit…

Photoinduced energy and electron-transfer processes in porphyrin-perylene bisimide symmetric triads.

The photophysics of two symmetric triads, (ZnP)2PBI and (H2P)2PBI, made of two zinc or free-base porphyrins covalently attached to a central perylene bisimide unit has been investigated in dichloromethane and in toluene. The solvent has been shown to affect not only quantitatively but also qualitatively the photophysical behavior. A variety of intercomponent processes (singlet energy transfer, triplet energy transfer, photoinduced charge separation, and recombination) have been time-resolved using a combination of emission spectroscopy and femtosecond and nanosecond time-resolved absorption te…

Infrared-Emission Studies of Electronic-to-Vibrational Energy Transfer. IV: Hg + HF.

Electronic-to-vibrational transfer has been observed for the process Hg* (6(3)P(1,0)) + HF(upsilon=0) ? Hg(6(1)S(0)) + HFdagger(upsilon=1-6). (The asterisk symbolizes electronic excitation, the dagger indicates vibrational excitation.) The observations were made by recording ir emission from HFdagger(v=1-6). A set of relative rate constants k(upsilon) were obtained from the observed stationary-state concentrations N(upsilon). The k(upsilon) decrease rapidly with increasing upsilon, up to upsilon = 6. From a comparison of the total HF emission intensity with total CO emission (due to Hg* + CO)

Visualizing energy transfer across a hexagonal Cs4PbBr6 microdisk using single-particle spectroscopy.

Micron-scale hexagonal Cs4PbBr6 perovskite microdisks (MDs), comprising a zero-dimensional phase, act as efficient energy donors when interfaced with the organic dye 1,1'-dioctadecyl-3,3,3',3'-tetramethylindocarbocyanine-perchlorate (DiIC18). Upon dye binding and selective excitation of the MDs, efficient singlet energy transfer (ET) occurs, as evidenced by the quenching of MD photoluminescence (PL), enhanced dye emission, and the emergence of an ET-induced rise component in the dye lifetime profile. Single-particle measurements under donor-selective excitation show strong ET-induced donor-acc…

Energy transfer and dynamic response of a gasbag-driven confined granular bed.

When gasbag inflation is used to drive a granular bed in a confined space, the system exhibits strong nonlinearity arising from membrane deformation, particle contact, and boundary constraint. This study investigates the dynamic response and energy-transfer characteristics of a gasbag-driven confined granular bed through experiments and DEM-FEM simulations. The dispersal patterns and particle velocity distributions were recorded under different driving pressures, and a parametric numerical model was used to examine the effects of driving pressure and particle diameter. The results show that, w
