Leu-enkephalin-positive structures in the pig pineal gland were demonstrated immunohistochemically using mouse monoclonal antibody. The pineal glands were obtained from the newborn, 21-day and 7-month old female pig. The immunopositive nerve fibers were observed in the pineal gland as well as in the epithalamic areas. The leu-enkephalin-immunoreactive nerve fibers (single or forming small bundles) were localized mainly in the proximal part of the pineal and they were scarce in other parts. The synthetic opiate D-Alanine-methionine enkephalin (D-Ala) affects neuronal activity of the fascia dentata (FD). D-Ala causes a depression of the population spike evoked by stimulation of the perforant path, which is antagonized by naloxone. In so called "Tandem" experiments it was shown that D-Ala had opposite effects on the CA1 pyramidal and FD granule cells. It is likely that in the FD the site of action of D-Ala is at the afferent synapses.

Human carotid bodies obtained at necropsy that showed prominence of either the sustentacular cell or the dark variant of chief cell or chronic carotid glomitis were studied by an immunogold labeling technique. Immunohistochemical investigations were carried out to determine the pattern of distribution of methionine- and leucine-enkephalin-like mate … ayer. Our results suggest that in cats, the nervous control of external muscular layers mediated by enkephalins shows regional differences. We examined the effect of opioid receptor antagonists on the seizure phenomena induced by specific delta opioid receptor agonist [D-Ser2,Leu5] enkephalyl-Thr (DSLET).
