The first description of the male and a redescription of the female of the nematode Paratrichosoma recurvum (Solger, 1877), a parasite of the abdominal skin of crocodiles, are presented on the basis of specimens collected from Crocodilus moreletii Duméril et Bibron from the Lagoon of Celestún, Yucatan, Mexico. The morphology of P. recurvum proved to be very similar to that of the only other congeneric species, P. crocodylus Ashford et Muller, 1978, but the former differed from the latter in having distinctly protruding polar plugs on eggs, reduced mesenchymal cells at the esophagointestinal ju

A space-occupying lesion 3.5 by 2.0 cm in size caused by Capillaria infection was revealed ultrasonographically in segment 6 (S6) of the liver of a 32-year-old woman from Okinawa, Japan, who was hospitalized with a complaint of pain in the right upper quadrant. Laboratory examination showed leukocytosis of 10,400/mm3 with 22% eosinophils and slight impairment of liver function. The tumor was removed surgically and found to be a necrotic granuloma with eosinophilic infiltration formed around a degenerated nematode. The causative agent was presumed to be Capillaria hepatica based on the morpholo

Zebrafish (Danio rerio) are a widely used biomedical model and offers powerful high-throughput screening capabilities for assessing chemical bioactivity. We have previously employed adult zebrafish infected with the intestinal nematode Pseudocapillaria tomentosa to investigate nematode-microbiome interactions, nematode-promoted intestinal neoplasia, and anthelmintic drug discovery. Here we transition this model to a larval zebrafish infection infection to enable larger-scale experimentation and ultimately accelerate anthelmintic discovery. Infection conditions were optimized across 5-30 days p

A 11-year-old boy, previously healthy and developmentally normal, born to a second-degree consanguineous marriage, presented with a history of pain during urination, blood in urine and passage of worms in urine. There is history of one episode of abnormal movements, generalized weakness, muscle aches and difficulty in walking during the episode. On systemic examination, gait ataxia was noted. Routine blood investigations were within normal limits and urine showed the presence of eggs of Dioctophyma renale. The abdominal ultrasonography revealed a small and shrunken left kidney with compensator

Dioctophyme renale is a zoonotic nematode that parasitizes mainly right kidney of domestic and wild canines, and can affect humans, and its eggs are eliminated in urine. The duration of egg dissemination after surgical treatment is unknown. Therefore, the objective of this study was to identify, quantify, and verify the duration of the elimination of D. renale eggs in dog urine after the surgical removal of nematodes. The study involved 15 dogs in which female specimens of D. renale were detected in kidneys. Urine samples, preferably first-morning urine samples, were collected before and for t

This paper reports on two cases of laparoscopic nephrotomy employed in the treatment of canine dioctophymosis, which is considered a unusual procedure and a new treatment proposal heretofore not performed in veterinary medicine. Two patients were treated, one with a history of hematuria and the other with incidental finding of the parasite in the abdominal cavity during elective ovariohysterectomy. Both dogs were subjected to abdominal ultrasound, which produced images indicating the presence of the parasite in the right side kidney, but with partial parenchymal preservation. The patients were

Pearsonema plica is a widely distributed nematode parasite that occurs in the urinary tract of various domestic and wild carnivores. The aim of this study was to investigate the occurrence and geographical distribution of P. plica and associated urinary bladder pathology in 112 red foxes (70 males, 42 females; 87 adults >1 year, 25 juveniles <1 year) from six different geographical regions in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The urinary bladders of the red foxes were subjected to gross examination and histopathology. Urine content (n = 40) and mucosal smears (n = 71) of the urinary bladders were examin

Parasitism is an important factor in conservation worldwide, especially for endangered species, as it can affect host populations by reducing growth rates, fecundity and affecting nutritional status. The maned wolf Chrysocyon brachyurus, a near-threatened species, is distributed across different habitats from the south Amazonian forest in Brazil to northern Argentina, Paraguay and eastern Bolivia. Most studies on gastrointestinal parasites in wild maned wolves are based on coprological findings, and there is little information about adult parasites and parasite species richness. Therefore, thi

The parasite Dioctophyme renale is a nematode that infects carnivores and often causes total and irreversible destruction of renal tissue. In cases of early diagnosis, nephrotomy is an alternative for renal preservation. This report describes the first laparoscopic nephrotomy performed without ischemia in the treatment of a female dog with renal dioctophymosis, using an ultrasonic scalpel for hemorrhage control. The technique stood out for its precision in simultaneous renal parenchyma incision and coagulation, eliminating the need for temporary blood flow interruption to the organ. It allowed

BACKGROUND: The presence of a foreign body resembling a worm in a urine collection bag should lead to etiological investigation, as it may not be a parasite. It is thus important to consider the context and origin of the patient, together with the size, length, appearance, and characteristics of the suspected worm.
CASE PRESENTATION: The presence of an apparently mobile black filament resembling a worm was reported in the urine collection bag of a 77-year-old African male resident of our long-term care facility. We initially suspected a parasitic infection. The description of this foreign bod

The most common causes of respiratory diseases in wild hedgehogs are the lungworms Crenosoma striatum and Capillaria aerophila, which can lead to life-threatening pneumonia. The aim of the current study was (A) to assess the prevalence of common lungworm infections in northern white-breasted hedgehogs (Erinaceus roumanicus) in Greece and (B) to identify an efficient and easy to administer treatment option. (A) Fifty-six hedgehogs were admitted to a Greek wildlife rehabilitation center and included in the present study. Fecal tests were performed using the flotation method (ZnSO4 33.2%) combine

Eucoleus boehmi (syn. Capillaria boehmi) is a canine trichuroid nematode affecting the upper respiratory airways (i.e., nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses) of dogs, foxes, and wolves. In the past few years, reports in dogs and wild canids have increased from across Europe, but data on its occurrence and distribution in Austria is scanty. A total of 47 red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) from the two westernmost provinces (Tyrol and Vorarlberg) of Austria were therefore examined for the presence of E. boehmi at necropsy. Eggs and adult nematodes were identified morphologically and molecularly (cox1) as E

Intestinal capillariasis in humans is caused by a nematode- Capillaria philippinensis, which infects small fresh water or brackish fish and some fish eating birds. It has occurred in areas where people eat raw fish such as the Philippines and Thailand. This paper reports a case of a women with intestinal capillariasis in Menouf, in the Nile Delta of Egypt. It is the second case to be reported from the same area of Menouf. Microscopic examination of stool revealed eggs, larvae and adult male and female worms of C. philippinensis. This was successfully treated with Albendazole.

BACKGROUND: Capillariid nematode eggs have been reported in archaeological material in both the New and the Old World, mainly in Europe and South America. They have been found in various types of samples, as coprolites, sediments from latrines, pits, or burial. Modern parasitological records show that around 300 species of capillariids have been described in all vertebrate taxa, including humans, making it a very diversified group. The main proposal of this work is to characterize and identify capillariid eggs found in archaeological sites from Europe and Brazil.
METHODS: A total of 39 sample

Capillaria (Procapillaria) navoneae n. sp. is described from the congrid fish Conger orbignianus from waters off Mar del Plata, Argentina (38 degrees 08'S, 57 degrees 32'W) (prevalence 29.17%, mean intensity +/- SD 6.07 +/- 6.59). The new species is assigned to the subgenus Procapillaria Moravec, 1987, despite the absence of vulvar appendages in gravid females. Of the 3 species so far known in the subgenus, the new one most closely resembles C. (P.) margolisi, from which it is distinguished by lacking a medial expansion in the spicule and a slightly elevated anterior lip of vulva, and by havin

A survey of the parasitic fauna of the Norwegian red fox (Vulpes vulpes) population was carried out in 1994/1995 and 2002-2005. All foxes were killed during the licensed hunting season from October to April and, in total, 393 animals from all regions of the country were examined. The present study details the results of extra-intestinal nematode and Trichinella larvae examinations. All individuals were examined for Trichinella, using routine digestion methods. Parasitological examination of the internal organs of some of the foxes also identified a number of different extra-intestinal nematode
