[Purpose] We investigated whether an increase or decrease in subcutaneous fat mass secondary to cardiac cachexia can be evaluated using diagnostic ultrasonography in patients with heart failure. [Participant and Methods] We report a case of cardiac cachexia in a patient in whom cachexia was confirmed by weight loss, decreased dietary intake, and biochemical indicators measured by blood tests. We measured the subcutaneous fat mass in the patient's thigh using ultrasonic diagnostic equipment during the cachectic state, as well as 1 and 2 months later. Mineral encrustation is a common complication associated with the use of urethral catheters and stents. A pH-controlling coating has been developed to reduce mineral encrustation on device surfaces by preventing the elevation of surface pH. Primary data show that the approach has the potential to reduce encrustation on the molecular level.

Excellent photoconductive properties have been found in Sb(2)O(3) nanobelts synthesized by a surfactant-assisted solvothermal method. We describe a case of true knotting of a suprapubic catheter in a 25-month-old boy who underwent surgery for urethrocutaneous fistula as a complication of a distal penile hypospadias repair. This unusual complication was probably attributable to an excessive length of catheter being inserted into the bladder, thereby allowing it to bend onto itself.

Closed suprapubic cystostomy using a suprapubic trocar and cannula is a standard surgical procedure for urinary diversion in cases of acute urinary retention. Decannulation is quite easy when the cannula has a side slit which allows easy detachment of the Foley catheter. However when the cannula is without a side slit decannulation becomes problematic. This simple decannulating method is described to overcome this difficulty.

PARTICIPANTS: 313 in-line recreational skaters observed skating in the parks, on bicycle trails, and on parkways in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and Columbus, Ohio were asked to participate in a short survey in 1995.

Under certain circumstances, variable height mounts (VHMs) manufactured by GCX Corporation-which are used to support physiologic monitors and displays-may unexpectedly drop to the wall mount support arm's lowest position, presenting the risk of staff injury or equipment damage. Hospitals can reduce the likelihood of this hazard by carrying out the company's recommended twice-annual inspection and by leaving the mount's height-locking lever disengaged during routine use.

BACKGROUND: Laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding has the lowest morbidity and mortality rates among the common bariatric procedures. Troublesome complications associated with this procedure include band slippage and erosion, often requiring revisionary surgery. Rates of slippage have decreased, and this appears to be due to changes in surgical technique. In the authors' experience, units with a low slippage rate also have a low erosion rate and vice versa. Thus a systematic review was undertaken to investigate this relationship.

When plugging the O2, N2O and air hoses into the corresponding wall sockets, the air hose was wrongly inserted into the N2O wall outlet. This was made possible because of faulty retaining clasps of the male coupler of the air probe. French "fail-safe" connections consist of a two-clasp male coupler for air, three clasps for O2 and four clasps for N2O hoses.
