The use of extended reality (XR) for education of healthcare personnel (HCP) is increasing. XR equipment is reusable and often shared between HCP in clinical areas; however, it may not include manufacturer's instructions for use (MIFU) in healthcare settings. Considerations for the selection of equipment and development of cleaning and disinfection protocols are described.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Duodenoscope-associated transmission of infections has raised questions about efficacy of endoscope reprocessing using high-level disinfection (HLD). Although ethylene oxide (ETO) gas sterilization is effective in eradicating microbes, the impact of ETO on endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) imaging equipment remains unknown. In this study, we aimed to compare the changes in EUS image quality associated with HLD vs HLD followed by ETO sterilization.
METHODS: Four new EUS instruments were assigned to 2 groups: Group 1 (HLD) and Group 2 (HLD + ETO). The echoendoscopes were assessed a

The ongoing pandemic of the novel severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has placed a substantial strain on the supply of personal protective equipment, particularly the availability of N95 respirators for frontline healthcare personnel. These shortages have led to the creation of protocols to disinfect and reuse potentially contaminated personal protective equipment. A simple and inexpensive decontamination procedure that does not rely on the use of consumable supplies is dry heat incubation. Although reprocessing with this method has been shown to maintain the integrity

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: With advancements in technology, flexible bronchoscopes have become thinner in diameter and in need of more thorough reprocessing to prevent infection transmission than ever before. Many experienced bronchoscopists are not aware of the critical steps involved in effective bronchoscope reprocessing and we hope to bridge this gap by describing this process in detail.
RECENT FINDINGS: Bronchoscope reprocessing includes several distinct steps (precleaning, leak testing, manual cleaning, visual inspection, terminal reprocessing, rinsing and drying). Each step is comprehensive an

Currently there is neither a regulatory foundation nor evidence-based medicine available to recommend reuse or multiple use of catheters for intermittent catheterization. High-level evidence from studies comparing the effect of reuse/multiple use versus single use on symptomatic urinary tract infection and urethral injury is still missing.

A systematic review of research on urinary drainage bag decontamination methods was conducted to evaluate existing evidence for practice related to long-term urinary catheter users. Six trials were found that met inclusion criteria. In addition, 9 clinical practice guidelines about urinary catheter care from 3 English-speaking countries were examined. Two studies were of modest quality; they included a randomized trial of 54 persons in a rehabilitation hospital and a laboratory comparison of 5 decontamination products. Three other articles included in the review were case series. All were publ

OBJECTIVE: While facing personal protective equipment (PPE) shortages during the COVID-19 pandemic, several institutions looked to PPE decontamination and reuse options. This study documents the effect of two hydrogen peroxide treatments on filtration efficiency and fit tests as well as the side effects for volunteers after the decontamination of N95 filtering facepiece respirators (FFRs). We also propose an efficient and large-scale treatment protocol that allows for the traceability of this protective equipment in hospitals during PPE shortages.

BACKGROUND: Cleaning is the foundational step in medical device reprocessing; residual soil and biofilm can compromise disinfection and sterilization and contribute to infections. Despite the importance of cleaning, healthcare facilities often rely on visual inspection, which may not detect residue inside lumens. This article examines evidence-based approaches to monitoring cleaning, with emphasis on implementation strategies for infection preventionists.
METHODS: Published literature on cleaning monitoring and standards for medical device reprocessing were reviewed. A practice-focused framew

Reusable medical devices are reprocessed between uses, including cleaning and, as necessary, disinfection or sterilization. Healthcare-associated infections have been attributed to reusable medical devices and linked to inadequate reprocessing, which can result in residual soil on the device, insufficient disinfection, microbial resistance to used disinfectants and biofilm-related contamination. These factors can lead to microbial proliferation on and biofouling of reusable medical devices, increasing the risk of patient infection. While there are FDA-recognized standards for cleaning validati

INTRODUCTION: Syringe services programs (SSPs) are evidence-based HIV prevention programs for people who inject drugs. However, not all SSPs operate evidence-based syringe distribution models, such as needs-based distribution. This study aims to provide preliminary evidence from the IDEA SSP on changes in injection risk behaviors over time, and to examine factors, including syringe coverage, associated with injection risk behavior trajectories over time under a one-for-one syringe distribution model.
METHODS: We used a prospective observational study design to generate a cohort of SSP clients

BACKGROUND: The healthcare sector contributes significantly to environmental pollution, which adversely affects human health. Operating rooms are a major source of this impact, partially due to the routine use of disposable materials prepacked in surgical trays. The main objective of this study was to compare the environmental impacts of fully disposable surgical trays with those of hybrid surgical trays, which replace disposable drapes and gowns with reusable ones.
METHODS: This multicentre study included surgical trays from three types of surgeries: gynaecological laparoscopy surgery, extre

BACKGROUND: Theatre activity is a major source of hospital waste, accounting for 21-30% of total output, and is 3-6 times more energy-intensive than any other hospital department. Cataract remains the leading cause of blindness worldwide, and cataract surgery is the most commonly performed surgical procedure worldwide, but to date has received little analysis in this field. The aim of this study was to evaluate the carbon impact of streamlining single-use packs, and transitioning from single-use items, to reusable equivalents in cataract surgery.
METHODS: A focus group and prospective audit w
