BACKGROUND: The therapy of disseminated granuloma annulare has often limited success. Treatment of granuloma annulare with fumaric acid esters (FAE) has recently been reported to be effective in 2 patients.

Rosin esters were prepared by heating rosin with glycerol and intermediate reaction products with different acid values were withdrawn. Salicylic acid granules were encapsulated using a 10 per cent solution of rosin esters in acetone. The coated microcapsules were evaluated for moisture absorption, flow properties and dissolution studies. The results showed that rosin and rosin-glycerol intermediates with acid values of 122, 105 and 55 had excellent moisture protection properties. Dissolution studies showed that these could be used for delayed release of drug.

Thiols are of great importance for the regulation of many cellular functions including metabolism, transport and cell protection. In this study the usefulness of L-cysteine methyl and octyl esters, of N,S-diacetyl-L-cysteine methyl ester and glutathione isopropyl ester as cellular cysteine and GSH delivery systems was investigated in the human IGR 1 melanoma cell line. Fumaric acid esters (FAE) are small molecules with immunomodulating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-oxidative effects. FAE were introduced as a systemic psoriasis treatment in 1959 and empirically developed further between 1970 and 1990 in Germany, Switzerland, and the Netherlands. Fetal alcohol syndrome is the leading known cause of mental retardation. The syndrome, defined as growth retardation, midface hypoplasia, and neurologic dysfunction, represents only part of the spectrum of fetal alcohol effects. The biochemical mechanism of teratogenesis is unknown. In adults, metabolites of ethanol, FAEE, are known to accumulate in major organs. Shellac esters were prepared by heating shellac with glycerol and intermediate reaction products were withdrawn. Salicyclic acid granules were encapsulated using a 20 per cent w/v alcoholic solution of shellac and shellac esters. The coated microcapsules were evaluated for moisture absorption, flow properties, and dissolution studies. The drug release from coated granules was seen to depend upon the acid value of the esters. Results indicate that shellac esters could be better encapsulating material than shellac in sustained release formulation.
