The long and the short of it: 5-HTTLPR and moral judgement.

Differences in moral sentiments are widespread. Increasingly, their biological correlates are investigated to elucidate potential sources of divergent moral attitudes and choices. Serotonin is one such potential modulator. We investigated the effects of a functional serotonergic polymorphism, 5-HTTLPR, which was previously linked to moral choices albeit with inconsistent findings. N = 157 healthy young adults completed a set of congruent and incongruent moral dilemmas. In addition to the traditional moral response score, this set allows by using a process dissociation (PD) approach an estimati

Harming by conceiving: a review of misconceptions and a new analysis.

An objection often is raised against the use of reproductive technology to create "nontraditional families," as in ovum donation for postmenopausal women or postmortem artificial insemination. The objection states that conceiving children in such circumstances is harmful to them because of adverse features of these nontraditional families. A similar objection is raised when parents, through negligence or willful disregard of risks, create children with serious genetic diseases or other developmental handicaps. It is claimed that such reproduction harms the children who are created. In reply to

"Doing the right thing": Moral conflicts and ethical issues experienced by military nurses during wartime.

INTRODUCTION: The War on Terrorism, which included Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) in Afghanistan from 2001 to 2014 and the concurrent Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) from 2003 to 2011, exposed military nurses to situations and challenges for which many reported feeling unprepared. Clinically, nurses faced multi-trauma injuries and devastating wounds suffered by military troops and civilians alike. Cultural issues and harsh living conditions added further complications to the care environment. The purpose of this study was to address the research question: How do military nurses identify, asses

Guidelines for genetic counselling for neurological diseases: ethical issues.

Genetic testing are available for a long list of neurodegenerative diseases. The most authoritative scientific and health-care institutions agree that dementia is going to be one of the major problems and most challenging priorities for public health care in upcoming years. Genetic counselling is a complex field. Technically speaking, the term "guideline" has a very specific meaning. Several guidelines for genetic testing for neurology diseases are available. The article summarizes, from an ethical perspective, the main guidelines for genetic counselling in the neurological filed and suggests

Why do they hate us, thick and thin?

Immediately after the September 11, 2001 terrorist strikes on the World Trade Center Towers, the Pentagon, and a plane over Pennsylvania, many in the West, but particularly the United States of America, felt urgently the pain of the question 'Why do they hate us?' in relation both to those who directly perpetrated those dreadful events and to those who sympathised with their perpetrators. In this paper, I will offer an account of some of the conceptual issues at stake in addressing seriously such a question as an opportunity for self-examination. I will argue that questions of this kind are th

Measuring costs from permitted gaming: concepts and categories in evaluating gambling's consequences.

This paper addresses the methodology of cost-benefit analysis as applied to policy alternatives regarding legally sanctioned gambling in its various forms. Existing economic studies regarding the social costs of gambling are reviewed and critiqued. Distinctions are made between definitions of social costs that are defined as actions which result in negative changes in aggregate social wealth (the "narrow" definition), and those which also include internal nonmarket costs that are borne by individual gamblers and their immediate families and acquaintances (the "broader" definition). This distin

From Buddhist meditation to psychological well-being: an ethical-cultural training ecology model.

Buddhist meditation is widely studied in relation to mindfulness, emotion regulation, compassion, and well-being, yet it is often operationalized as an attentional or stress-reduction technique detached from the ethical and cultural conditions of practice. This article develops the ethical-cultural training ecology model, a Hypothesis and Theory framework that treats Buddhist meditation as a coordinated practice ecology rather than a single psychological technique. The model distinguishes four nested analytic levels. Ethical-cultural ecology provides the process-shaping context; a probabilisti

Applications of qualitative grounded theory methodology to investigate hearing loss: protocol for a qualitative systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Hearing loss is a chronic condition affecting 12 million individuals in the UK. People with hearing loss regularly experience difficulties interacting in everyday conversations. These difficulties in communication can result in a person with hearing loss withdrawing from social situations and becoming isolated. While hearing loss research has largely deployed quantitative methods to investigate various aspects of the condition, qualitative research is becoming more widespread. Grounded theory is a specific qualitative methodology that has been used to establish novel theories on

A multidimensional model of ethical challenges in hemodialysis: a qualitative study for specialist physicians.

BACKGROUND: Chronic Kidney Disease affects 13% of China's population, with hemodialysis consuming 1-3% of national healthcare expenditure. Hemodialysis patients face complex physical-psychological burdens, while physicians in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) hospitals navigate unique ethical dilemmas arising from dual Western-TCM practice paradigms, cultural expectations, and systemic healthcare pressures. This study employed Social-Ecological Systems Theory to analyze these multilayered challenges and developed a structured ethical model. METHODS: This study followed a qualitative phenomen

Sowing "seeds of trust": How trust in normothermic regional perfusion is built in a continuum of care.

Normothermic regional perfusion (NRP) is a promising technology to improve organ transplantation outcomes by reversing ischemic injury caused by controlled donation after circulatory determination of death. However, it has not yet been implemented in Canada due to ethical questions. These issues must be resolved to preserve public trust in organ donation and transplantation. This qualitative, constructivist grounded theory study sought to understand how those most impacted by NRP perceived the ethical implications. We interviewed 29 participants across stakeholder groups of donor families, org

Validity and reliability of the Oxford Utilitarianism Scale among obstetricians and gynecologists.

BACKGROUND: Utilitarianism is a normative ethical theory that evaluates moral decisions based on their consequences, emphasizing the maximisation of overall well-being/outcomes for the greatest number. It serves as an important framework in clinical settings, where ethical dilemmas frequently arise. This study aimed to assess the validity and reliability of the Turkish version of the Oxford Utilitarianism Scale (OUS) among obstetricians and gynecologists (OB/GYNs). METHODS: A total of 194 obstetricians and gynecologists participated in this online study and completed the OUS alongside a brief …

Assessing empirical research in bioethics.

Empirical research can aid ethical reflection in bioethics by identifying issues, by seeing how they are currently resolved, and by assessing the consequences of these current resolutions. This potential can be misused when the ethical issues in question are fundamentally non-consequentialist or when they are consequentialist but the empirical research fails to address the important consequences. An example of the former problem is some recent studies about bad consequences resulting from commercialized living kidney donor programs. These consequences could be avoided, but the crucial non-cons

Darren's case: narrative ethics in Perri Klass's Other Women's Children.

During the past fifteen years, the relationship between literature and medical ethics has evolved from the occasional use of stories as a substitute for the traditional case study in medical ethics to the emergence of a narrative approach to ethical analysis and decision making. Thus far, literary theory has been more important to narrative medical ethics than have works of literature themselves. Perri Klass's novel Other Women's Children deserves special scrutiny, however, because an analysis of it demonstrates ways that a narrative approach could enhance traditional philosophical and legal a

Is severe alcohol use disorder really associated with increased utilitarian moral judgment? Exploration using the CNI model.

OBJECTIVES: The psychology of moral decision-making classically contrasts utilitarianism (based on consequences) and deontology (based on moral norms). Previous studies capitalizing on this dichotomy have suggested the presence of a utilitarian bias among patients with severe alcohol use disorder (SAUD). We aimed to further disentangle the processes involved in such bias through a more validated approach, the CNI model of moral decision-making. This model allows to go further than the classical approach by distinguishing sensitivity to consequences (C), to moral norms (N), and general preferen

Bringing critical realism to nursing practice: Roy Bhaskar's contribution.

In the context of modern nursing practice that is embedded within complex social situations, critical discussions about the contribution of major philosophers are relevant and important. Whilst nurse theorists have advanced and shaped nursing as a discipline, other major philosophers can offer much to advance nursing enquiry. In this paper, we focus on philosopher Roy Bhaskar who, amongst others, developed critical realism, a philosophy for social science which connects with how many of us think about the world. Bhaskar's work focuses our attention on the interplay between structure and agency

A classical view of the theory-practice gap in nursing.

The perceived problem of the theory-practice gap is built upon the assumption that theory can and must be directly applied to nursing practice, otherwise it is irrelevant. Whilst the spirit in which this claim is made is healthy, the assumption is false. An examination of the Greek origins of theory and practice show that the ancient Greeks had different terms for the different types of knowledge contained within theory and within practice. The type of knowledge associated with practice could not be taught through theory, nor well represented in theoretical terms. The knowledge of the bicycle

Telos, conservation of welfare, and ethical issues in genetic engineering of animals.

The most long-lived metaphysics or view of reality in the history of Western thought is Aristotle's teleology, which reigned for almost 2,000 years. Biology was expressed in terms of function or telos, and accorded perfectly with common sense. The rise of mechanistic, Newtonian science vanquished teleological explanations. Understanding and accommodating animal telos was essential to success in animal husbandry, which involved respect for telos, and was presuppositional to our "ancient contract" with domestic animals. Telos was further abandoned with the rise of industrial agriculture, which u

Swarm intelligence.

The standard view of how things work is that an outside force impacts a group of individuals and causes outcomes they are interested in. The outside force may not affect all individuals to the same extent, but we can summarize the effect by taking the average. Effective influence is thought to come from the top, not from the group that is being led. The alternative considered here is that a substantial degree of intelligence resided in the individuals or elements that someone wants to study or change. And these elements of the system interact with each other. This phenomenon goes by many names

Should the practice of medicine be a deontological or utilitarian enterprise?

There is currently an unrecognised conflict between the utilitarian nature of the overall NHS and the basic deontology of the doctor-patient interaction. This conflict leads to mistrust and misunderstanding between managers and clinicians. This misunderstanding is bad for both doctors and managers, and also leads to waste of time and resources, and poorer services to patients. The utilitarian thinkers (mainly managers and politicians) tend to value finite, short term, evidence based technical interventions, delivered according to specifications and contracts. They appear happy to break care up
