Medical Ethnobotany of the Bissau-Guinean Community of Migrants Living in Northern Italy and Comparison with the Ethnopharmacology of Guinea-Bissau.

This study compares the knowledge of medicinal plants of Bissau-Guinean migrants now established in Italy with the ethnopharmacology still present in their country of origin. We also investigated how traditional ethnobotanical knowledge is changing following the phenomenon of migration from Africa to Europe. The ethnobotanical data were collected during 2017-2018, by interviewing 49 informants belonging to 8 ethnic groups, living in 8 provinces of northern Italy. The final inventory of botanical taxa included 81 species belonging to 34 families, with Fabaceae and Malvaceae the most represented

Exploring Ethnobotany in the Catalan Linguistic Area: Traditional Plant-Based Knowledge for Addressing Gastrointestinal, Metabolic, and Nutritional Disorders.

Ethnobotanical research in the Catalan linguistic area (CLA) is crucial due to the persistence of traditional medicinal plant knowledge. Gastrointestinal, metabolic, and nutritional disorders are major global health issues requiring effective treatments. This study aimed to analyze plants used for these disorders in the CLA, compare the findings with phytotherapy literature, and examine correlations between plant use in humans and animals. Data were sourced from the database of the research group of Catalan ethnobotany at the University of Barcelona and the Botanic Institute of Barcelona, repr…

From Ethnobotany to Pharmacology: A Comprehensive Review of Selected Asteraceae Species Highlighting Phytochemical Composition, Traditional Uses, and Diverse Pharmacological Activities.

Medicinal plants are widely used in the Mediterranean region, where they have long been employed in traditional medicine as well as in the food and beverage industry. At the same time, people in developed countries are increasingly dissatisfied with modern healthcare due to the side effects and complications associated with chemical drugs, prompting a growing interest in more natural alternative treatments. The Asteraceae family is one of the largest flowering plant families, containing many species with medicinal properties. It comprises over 1600 genera and approximately 25,000 species world

Ethnobotany and conservation of the species Celtis toka (Forssk.) Hepper & J.R.I. wood: A way forward for sustainable use in Burkina Faso.

Celtis toka (C. toka), a critically endangered mystical plant, is a highly valued and overharvested multiuse tree species by local population in Burkina Faso. The ethnobotany of C. toka can lead to its sustainable use, therefore it is a great challenge because little information is available on this aspect concerning the species in Burkina Faso as well as in Africa. Thus, this study aims to assess the sustainable use and management of C. toka in Burkina Faso. The study was conducted along a climate gradient (Sudanian and Sudano-Sahelian climatic zones) in Burkina Faso. Data were collected rand…

Leaves that leave their mark: A case series of pediatric Piper Betle-induced leukomelanosis.

This case series presents 10 pediatric patients, aged 4 to 9 years, with leukomelanosis on the chest or forehead. The pigmentary changes developed after the traditional use of Piper betle leaves as a home-based remedy for a cough or cold. Piper betle-induced leukomelanosis in children is a rare dermatosis resulting from cultural practices. It is important to recognize the role of ethnobotany in dermatology.

Ethnobotanical and alkaloid composition with their cytotoxicity of Tabernaemontana polyneura: A review with in silico ADMET analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Tabernaemontana is a genus of plants traditionally used to treat various diseases, such as syphilis. Many cytotoxic indole alkaloids were isolated and characterized from plants of this genus, suggesting their potential applications as chemotherapeutical drugs or drug leads. Nonetheless, the Malaysian native species Tabernaemontanapolyneura was relatively unknown. This study provides an overview of the botany, ethnobotany, phytochemistry, and in silico ADMET analysis of cytotoxic alkaloids isolated from T. polyneura. METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was conducted using …

Selection and uses of species in urban afforestation in Maranhão, Northeast Brazil: an ethnobotanical approach.

This study aimed to assess the diversity and composition of species that make up urban forestry and the factors that determine the choice and maintenance of plants by residents of São Francisco do Maranhão. Interviews were conducted in homes or commercial establishments that had trees in front of them, and the species were classified into categories of use. A total of 317 trees from 16 families and 32 species were analyzed; the most abundant individuals were Azadirachta indica A. Juss. and Terminalia catappa L. When comparing exotic and native individuals, significant differences were identifi

Beyond wrapping leaves: an ethnobiological study on tangible culture of zongzi in China‌.

BACKGROUND: Zongzi is a traditional Chinese food with a long cultural history. Our previous study revealed that the leaves of 57 plant species have been used to wrap zongzi. However, the ingredient system of zongzi, plant-based binding materials, plant transformation in plant-ash water and ash-zongzi preparation, and human-plant relationships in the selection of zongzi materials are unclear. To understand the cultural and dietary significance of zongzi, the ethnobiological surveys were carried out, aiming to investigate the species diversity used for making zongzi and associated traditional kn

Malaria in Guinean Rural Areas: Prevalence, Management, and Ethnotherapeutic Investigations in Dionfo, Sub-Prefecture of Labe.

As part of a validation program of antimalarial traditional recipes, an ethnotherapeutic approach was applied in Dionfo, a meso-endemic Guinean rural area where conventional health facilities are insufficient. A prevalence investigation indicated a malarial burden of 4.26%. Ethnomedical and ethnobotanical surveys led to a collection of 63 plant species used against malaria from which Terminalia albida (Combretaceae) was one of the most cited. Ethnotherapeutic evaluation of a remedy based on T. albida was applied to 9 voluntary patients suffering from uncomplicated malaria. Treatment of 7 to 14
